Is this news or just discussion? I believe it was always the plan to slowly build up Goodwins responsibility. I imagine after the break Goowin will continue to have more game-day responsibility.

Head coach or mentor - Roos will be pulling the strings. We are paying Roos big $$ for a reason so I would like him to coach for as long as possible but at the same time I have faith that he will know whats best.

Didn't he do that with Longmire in his last year at the Swans?

Really feel like we would benefit from another year under Roos though.

Was thinking maybe if Goodwin wants to get some experience as head coach (cement his structure/values) before 2017 then he could have the second half of 2016 following the bye.

Provided that's not too confusing for players and staff.

Seems as though you're making a big statement with no evidence attached...

Is this opinion or fact?

Time will tell.

But, I'm pretty sure I broke the news about Goodwin becoming senior assistant too.

I posted this proposition last night in a long and detailed way only for my connection to crash during posting.

Roos has been posturing the last few weeks and the inclusion of McCartney has approved the process to conclude earlier than anticipated.

Not sure what all the fuss is about.

Its been on the club web site for a few days: http://www.melbournefc.com.au/news/2015-06-25/goodwins-role-could-increase-this-year and was discussed in the 'Roos stop making excuses' thread. http://demonland.com/forums/index.php?/topic/38437-paul-roos-dont-give-us-more-excuses/page-13?hl=%20roos%20%20excuses

So nothing to talk about folks!

My prediction in that thread was that Goodwin would coach NAB games.

Then Roos would start to take a step back as the season goes on in line with the article on the website.

Can't imagine Roos stepping back when we are still losing games and at the bottom part of the ladder.

The quicker we can get Paul Roos out of the gameday tactical command role, the better. Let’s face it, that is not his strength.

What exactly do you base this from?

It wasn't pretty but the ball control game plan from last year stemmed the bleeding. There have been a number of solid tactical moves within games this year.

The last 40 seconds against the Saints was everyones fault and I think people are reading too much in to the Oxley QB'day thing.

I'm happy to be guided by Roos if he wants to handover faster than anticipated then I back his judgement. But I wouldn't be pushing him out.

It would be most interesting to hear just what rôle Goodwin plays in the game day box right now?

Any real insights - please don't speculate.

tactics against Cats were brilliant. Both individual match ups and the overall tactic of playing them one on one and cutting off the corridor went a long way to winning the game. What was your issue.

How would you know? Do you sit in the box with him? Have you heard it from a current player or one of the assistants? Do you have an elite understanding of modern AFL tactics and structures (if yes then why aren't you employed at an AFL club).

There's no way you can make such a sweeping statement like that.

I was hoping Roos would coach us in 2016 and then take on some sort of mentoring role in 2017 onwards. I hope he can hang around the club in some capacity after his time is up.

Looks like I may not be renewing my membership in 2016 then.

Whoa! Obviously Paul Roos can do no wrong. That Saints thing wasn’t his fault. No! And Oxley ran around on his own because Paul wanted it that way. Yes!

I don’t know what he does in the coaches box. But as the coach, I would assume every major tactical change is vetted by him. If you all are happy with everything that’s gone on in the box this year, fine. I’m not.

But nothing sticks to Paul Roos. Can any of you guys help me out here and name a single thing you think he’s done wrong? If you can’t then I might suggest one of two things: either he’s wasted in footy and should be negotiating world peace; or you’re so enamoured with him that you don’t see some of his flaws.

Paul Roos is a brilliant man manager. That’s his strength. We’re talking about a man who let Brad Miller of all people destroy his team’s forward structure on multiple occasions because he wouldn’t change his positioning. Granted, that was a long time ago with another team; but it demonstrates something about his strength and weaknesses, IMO.

Anyway, flame on.

You can always tell when a poster is legit. The OP is legit. He has form.

Will this be in-house, public, or a bit of both ?

Form as in saying that "Dylan Shiel will be at Hawthorn next year", not long before he signed an extension with GWS?

Yeahhhhhh.... not convinced yet.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
