Delistings/trades at end of the season

From all Roosy's talk on TV you expect us to be recruiting players with good leg speed and endurance. Players that can't run won't play, paraphrasing Roosy.

Kind of agree with that philosophy. However, we do seem a little light on for key forwards. I think Dawes is too often injured and doesn't provide value for money.

Who can we trade for? For any well informed Demonlanders -any key forwards upcoming in the draft that we should look at?

If we could trade in a mid or two and keep our first pick, we may use it on a tall.

I know what people have said regarding Roos not keen on drafting talls, but maybe it might be Goowins call, maybe they have identified someone in the draft.

Time will tell.

Hes had upside since he was drafted, still waiting to see him realise it.

Agree but he has great skills and is big and quick and really only has one problem, a lack of aggression. How many scoring assists has he been involved in? Who would you prefer with ball in hand 30-40 out?

I thought in a few efforts he was turning around his game. He is a finisher and we don't have that many of them. I would keep him.

Toumpas

Howe

Garland

Watts

Grimes

Dawes

Terlich

M.Jones

Spenser

Makes 15 and were done.

This year or next.

And the clean out is complete.

You think we should get rid of Fitzy and Spencer with Jamar already gone?

Every list has players that are needed for back up and depth who aren't quite first 18 ,and might need a year or two of development.

Brad Green.

I did say this year or next.

Pencil is contracted for next year and obviously will remain on the list until as a minimum. We will no doubt be looking to bring in someone else in.Depending on who that is and how developed they are next year could be his last.

Will be interesting to see if someone gives Fitzy a second crack. 1-2 year contract on minimum payments mightn't hurt, for a tall he's still comparatively young.

Either that or he finds a home in the SANFL.

Surprised Terlich didn't make the list

1 more year to run on his contract, may pay him out, may just wait until next year - particularly in a shallow draft. Ditto for M Jones.

If we have to give out 4 year deals to attract mediocre players then I'd rather we kept Toumpas, Watts, Garland and Howe.

There's no point having a bunch of 2nd or 3rd picks if you can't deal them for anyone and the draft isn't good.

Every draft shallow or not has its surprises.

I think this one will have some surprises at the top end. Instead of Hogan & Cameron we might have a few Ace Cordy's...

Wouldnt it be great to see Carlton waste another no.1 pick.

At least we got Hogan for Scully.

I am surprised that Fitzy was one of four delistings yesterday. Not sure that we couldn't have worked with a 200cm versatile KPP or at least retained him on the list for the upcoming trade period!

With the 6 changes on the list so far, you'd think that Harmes and Vandenberg will be elevated, which only leaves 2 spots on the primary list, and 2 spots for rookies....

Surely there will be more delistings/movement, as I would be disappointed with two young draftees/rookies. Still have Pedersen, Hunt, Garland, Howe + Toumpas OOC plus Terlich, M Jones, Dawes, Grimes, Watts

It wouldn't surprise me to see Hunt delisted as well. Pedersen is 50/50 for me, while I think they will persist with Toumpas. Terlich and M. Jones will hopefully be cut or traded for picks we won't even use, which will free up more room.

The club made the 4 obvious delistings and will probably sit back and wait to see the market before making more.

I would still keep Watts, he has upside and possibly plenty of it.

Absolutely agree. Hope we keep Watts. And Garland.

I think it is better for Watts if he were moved on to another club, especially one with a decent midfield where he can thrive as an outside player. A win-win would be to trade him to Richmond for Ben Lennon, who is younger and a bit unproven but has immense talent...same silky skills but can go harder for the ball. You don't let Jack go unless you get something decent for him. Watts would be in Richmond's best 22, someone who could switch between the forward and backline when needed. Where Lennon is a better fit for our best 22.

Pederson will most likely be trade fodder as well. You would look to giving him to a team on the premiership bubble to help a forwardline structure. Freo comes to mind - would be good to trade for someone like Hayden Crozier, a good player who just can't get much of a chance in a strong side, maybe a swap of picks in their favour.

Howe I would look to pass onto someone like GWS who have previously shown interest and bundling with a third round pick, look to get players like Tomlinson and Bugg.

Gold Coast are players with maturity and leadership. Grimes probably needs a fresh start somewhere. Would trade him out for a mid 2nd rounder (shallow draft) or for a young player that has shown a bit - maybe Aaron Hall and a switch of picks.

Jed Adcock is worth a delisted free agent spot on the list. Brisbane can't receive a PP when they delist a 29 year old who is in their B&F top 10.

I also like that we are going after players like Nathan Hrovat, who is tough at it with speed and skills. Would be great to get him while his value is down.

Not a fan of trading out a player when their value is low so I think you keep Toumpas and Dawes at this stage.

All in all I'm sure we are active but just hope we are shrewd. Don't try and screw over other teams so the deal doesn't get done (Pies and bombers), but also don't give overs. Essendon will wrongly demand a 1st or 2nd rounder for Melksham. If they don't budge then take him in the preseason draft. I doubt any other team is looking at giving him 4 years so he should slip through easily.

I don't think we are getting an A grader this year. We just haven't made ourselves into a destination club with our on field performance.

It's no surprise we'll be rumoured to have interest in every player on the market, and some fringe players perhaps not on the market. Fact is we will, because despite our improvements we still hold more than half a [censored] list.

I don't care where you were drafted or which club you came from. If you can get it plenty, use it properly, play both ways and last a whole game then you're a candidate to join the MFC.

And none of the names currently being mentioned + available should be given a second thought.

Your maths...

6 deletions from the PL. If you lose 6 apples and gain 2 apples, how many apples will you go and get from the cart to end up with the same amount of apples?

4 more apples! Plus at least 2 rookie apples...

Mason Shaw as a delisted free agent from Port.

Key forward who can pinch hit in the ruck with all the talent in the world.

Currently 6 senior list vacancies.

Trade out Dawes, Watts, Howe, Grimes

Trade in Melksham, Hrovat, Currie, Moore

Promote off Rookie List: Vandenberg, Harmes, White

Delisted Free Agents: Adcock, Mason Shaw, Cameron Giles

Delist & re-rookie: M. Jones, Terlich

Natonal Draft: Charlie Curnow, Kurt Murtimer

Rookie Draft: Jack Watson

I'd like to think that our list management team can achieve a much better outcome than that.

  • NON-MFC: 2026 Opening Round

Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. On Friday night, Gold Coast gets its chance to open the season in front of a home crowd when the Suns and Christian Petracca take on Geelong at People First Stadium. Saturday features a double-header, starting in the afternoon with Greater Western Sydney and Clayton Oliver meeting the Hawks at Engie Stadium. That is followed on Saturday night by Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, with the Lions embarking on their campaign to win the Threepeat. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.

Mars is not usually a place known for lighting strikes but on Friday evening it happened twice in the vicinity of the stadium in Ballarat that carries the name and is a half completed building site with limited capacity for spectators.
