And according to Gil the dill at a recent function, CAS is a lot more prepared than ASADA.....

 

jnrmac, can you explain what you mean (or what you think McLachlan meant)?  CAS is a tribunal charged with making a decision whereas ASADA is the body charged with making an investigation, I'm unclear what it is that makes CAS more prepared than ASADA.

Unfortunately 'Chris' it seems to be the norm for major sporting bodies these days. It would be a welcome change to see a well run organisation where integrity is not just another word for spin.

We trust their penalties will be delayed.

It will also let us play Melksham next year before we swap him with White on the Rookie list.

If Melksham is suspended so be it.  The sooner the suspension is served the better and we get it over and done with.  He was a 20 year old kid at the time and probably just 'followed the leader'.  Nonetheless the rules apply to him as well.   

From his recent interview he seems a decent young man and I would hope a year suspension would only make him more motivated to play well and repay the faith to the Dees.    Clearly the club saw him as a long-term investment and not a stop-gap for a year or two.  We will still get many years of football from him.

CAS is making its own investigations as well. And it was inferred that the level of detail and care is significantly greater.

Anyone who is keen for a laugh have a read of this, I found it linked in Richard Ing's twitter account. Hilarious is its misunderstanding of the code and why it is the way it is.

That Tom Ryan won my undying admiration when he wrote the article entitled:

It looks like a PR campaign to make it easy to cry 'unfair' just in case they are found guilty is well under way.

Chris, you've included two links to one article instead of two separate ones.

In all honesty, I want to agree with him on two points. Firstly, the point about "intention" to cheat sounds admirable. But I know that it would make it so much harder to prove cheating and that sport (generically) has brought this scheme upon itself because of systematic doping regimes. A shame, nevertheless.  Secondly, the question of efficacy of banned substances and whether they actually do anything also sounds reasonable...until you recall that doping starts with "new" drugs that no-one knows what they actually do.

That's exactly what they're trying to argue in the horse racing/cobalt case that's going on as we speak.

"We didn't mean to do it, and it's not performance enhancing anyway."

Both points and their rebuttal are old ground that I won't go over, but the racing people have banned cobalt because they suspect it may be performance enhancing. Just like AOD-9604 is on the WADA S0 list because it may be performance enhancing.

If the racing people want to ban hay, then they can ban hay. If you the trainer don't like it, lobby to get the rule changed. But don't feed your horses hay in the meantime and argue that the rule is wrong.

If the AFL ban oranges at half time, don't eat oranges. And if you do, don't front up to the tribunal arguing that the rule is wrong. Do that elsewhere, while not eating oranges.

I find it staggering that Fitzpatrick would endorse anything/anyone at EFC over the last 3/4 years.  I just don't get how the AFL cannot see the damage that has been caused to their code, their 'integrity' and what fools the AFL l look when they come out with endorsements like that.

I would like, just once, for someone at the AFL to come out and strongly condemn the 'pharmacological experiment' (WADA compliant or not) and strongly condemn anyone associated with it.

You have pointed out the areas where they are completely neive as to why the code is the way it is. There are very good reasons for it and it actually relatively easy to live within the code, hence thousands of athletes manage to do it.

The layman out there and fans of 17 other clubs can see that essendon were up to no good and that the afl have done nothing about it.

Everyone thinks they are drug cheats bar the essendon faithful.

Even if Cas clear the players we will still think they are cheats (it's not as if they have shown anything otherwise).

The afl would do well to condemned their total lack of governanceas as well as their extremely dodgy supplements practices.

When is Fitzpatrick going to quit he reminds me of Blatter or Plantini from FIFA.

There mates no doubt. Who knows what the business connections are but my suspicion is that they are there. There are always mates clubs and the AFL and its member clubs are one big mates club. They all have a finger in the pie of mutual need, giving, receiving, and self congratulation. Ask a non footy person who has been involved in footy clubs and the ones I know are very disparaging of the culture of stratching backs that goes on within the inner circle both within clubs and between club heavyweights and the AFL. The AFL is hopelessly compromised. They should not be but that is the way. The only thing one can enjoy is the purity of the game itself but even that is being devalued by commercial need and demands by the TV networks. 

While we have on this site such a diversification of people's opinions that do really have a handle on the events of how this

saga is playing out I think that we should all be satisfied about the continued informed and varied comments.

Underlies the importance of mature, sometimes humorous and critical debate in my book anyway.
