Double edged sword, I reckon. A couple of times he stops playing the ball and whinges at the umpires - that has to stop. Also had a couple of cracks at the delivery yesterday, which is fine, but not a great look when you're screaming at your teammates and throwing your arms in the air....

Bit worried about Jesse's attitude. This is based on a few things.

1: His call that his stats are better than Schwarz's so he doesnt need his help. That is the wrong way to look at it, if you really want to learn and be the best you can learn from everyone, sometimes especially those you least expect to.

2: Roos pointing him out about not knowing yet what is expected from an AFL footballer (or now starting to work it out). He did point out others but Hogan stood out.

3: His dummy spits at the umps where he stops playing.

4: He usually has little second effort and only seems to when the ball comes back to him, not when he chases the ball. He seems to give up easily.

He seems to believe the hype and expects to be great. There are warning signs there that he may not realise the work you need to put in to be great no matter how much talent you have.

In saying all of that he does seem quite stand offish and reserved so it may just be an outward projection that doesn't match his inner thoughts. One of those introverts most on here seem to discard at will.

Am referring to Walker's unorthodox bowling action. IMO Hogan has done too much weights and walks like a body builder this has made his running action too wobbly. He is trying to counter this with a 'tangled' release.

Hi s demeanor on field needs reigning in, as a captain or coach I would make it my duty to make him realise how infuriating it is to play with someone more interested in a free than the footy.

When he has some banter with Schwarta - that is great. He had no right to be called disgraceful, and David deserved a little dig. Hogan doing the digging was a good sign he is becoming more comfortable off the field.

Roos letting him (and us) know that he still has to learn the habits of a star player was to combat the hype.

'Second year blues' occur when a young player thinks he doesn't have to work for the game and the game will just come to him. Hopefully, yesterday was a lesson for Jesse in that regard too...

his run-up to kick is not nearly as bad as everyone says.

 

it is being critcised primarily because it starts so strangely with the ball held over the wrong foot - but then he has the stutter and from there it's actually super-steady and perfectly balanced.

 

he's going to be helped massively by the limited rotations of modern football, because teams are going to start going long. look at kennedy for meth coke yesterday - he was unstoppable once they got their quick ball movement happening. admittedly the bears were absolute gash, but no one would've been able to stop kennedy with the amount of ball he was being presented with.

 

people criticising hogan's second efforts need to watch that gif of him floating back and killing the contest in the last seconds. he impacted the contest and ensured it was neutralised.

 

he's one impressive unit to be as starved of opportunity as he was in the first half, move up the ground to get involved in the third, and then utterly dominate the last.

I hate saying this, but I do see a bit of Jack Reiwoldt in Hogan with regard to attitude. The tigers fans experienced it with Richo and as he retired up bobbed Jack doing the same thing. Dropping a mark and getting upset, or having an off day with the hands so playing for frees. 

Now it's great that he is annoyed with himself that he missed a mark or something like that but Jonno Brown should be his inspiration, if Brown missed a mark he followed the play up right until the end and then allowed himself to be angry. 

That all said the delivery into Hogan (although he missed a couple of good chances) was absolutely in the favour of the defenders for the first 3 quarters. 4th quarter we had open 50 and hit him up on leads. He showed the Hogan we'll see more often as he becomes more experienced.

His frustration is a combination of poor delivery at times, being restricted as he at tempts to move off the mark for the lead and not quite knowing or being capable of making separation from bigger/just as agile/stronger opponents (like Davis at this point). The Hulk/Club will hopefully address these in time.

Bigger opponents ...can work on this with the assistance of an experienced forward who can show him the way to run patterns/make separation early and lead into space more often. At the moment Jesse often leads his opponent to the ball (without losing him early) hoping his ability/talent/skill at the contest will win the day. This will work some of the time at AFL level but not as much of the time as it may have at VFL/More junior levels. IMO this is where the main frustration lies and we quickly need to get the likes of Derm or Carey down their to show him the tricks of the trade in losing his opponent much earlier before leading and where to lead to/other patterns/hard work required to get the pill/u contested mark more often.

A combinatin of extra strength/agility work in the gym over the next few seasons will see him take it to another level.... subject to the above happening.

I really think he is suffering because of three major things.

1. the weight of expectation is getting to him, he had a huge deal on the table from the MFC, and he decided to put talks on hold for now, that carries some risk that if his form drops away sharply the offer may not be the same when he re-opens talks  ( for me he's going okay at the moment though )

2. he is not understanding that just because he is talented beyond belief that it's going to be his hard work that gets him through the moments where it's not going all his way, not his talent, this is something Macca was talking to him about at training last week, " if it's not going all your way, which happens to every player, simplify things, don't worry about goals just set yourself the goal of doing 1 or 2 things really well, like don't be outmarked and get to as many contests as you can" 

3. i think we have one to many talls down there and it's crowding the forward line! i personally think Watts is good enough on currant form to be the second big and allow us to play an extra small/medium forward

Marchbank goes to Watts, and Hogan physically pushes his way between them, while Watts stands in the way of the incoming Davis. They were working really hard to get the match ups to favour them - Hogan on Marchbank, and Watts on Davis.

Both these match ups worked outstandingly well for us and were probably what got us home in the end, with both Hogan and Watts smashing their opponents in the last qtr. Is this our new "game analyst" at work???

That was a first effort, yes it was good but it wasnt a second effort. If you watch the rest of the game he makes one effort at the ball and then stands there flat footed while everyone runs around him. The Gif of that would be too long as there were plenty of examples yesterday.

The kid is in his second year and all the "experts" are getting the knives out....He is not a 26 year old with 150 games experience

He is a 20 year old who has played ONE season and has a lot of expectation on his shoulders.

The record books will show that he kicked 3 goals in a win for the club.   How when and why will not even be remembered.
