Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

He's currently on 98 games.

He will get to 100 by season's end.

The sooner we all accept this, the saner we'll all be.

What's your point?

If the mother of his children has guts and determination perhaps a father son in years to come.

The roles he plays, or attempts to play, both forward and back could be filled by players in the first team that would earn less than $600k together...

I can understand the desire to keep him, but literally at half or what he is asking, I can't understand it for anymore than that.

That backline needs another Salem, and that forward line needs to work out how to leave Hogan one out. Neither need Jeremy Howe.

Jeremy Howe contact talks,

Thanks for coming in Jeremy, it's like this, you play like you are not interested so our offer is we have a position at Casey and we are prepared to pay on a performance basis ie. you don't perform and we don't pay. Do you have anything you'd like to add? No, good we will play you until seasons end and say in public that you are a required player and we want you at the club. Then we will trade you to any fool that will have you or onto the rookie list OK. Thanks for coming in Jeremy on your way out could you send in the witches hat err.. Dawsey?

...at AFL average salary.

Average salary for an average player.

I mean that in the nicest way possible - he is an average player, and paying average players who don't play above average roles, above average salaries is bad list management.

Is it possible for a player to have a heavily performance-based contract? From what I can see, there's no longer a salary cap floor, so what's to stop a club lodging a contract as: this is the maximum amount we will pay this player, which will fit under the cap? (other than the obvious player unlikely to sign caveat)

Didn't think he was going to reach 100 games before year's end, but round 23 is actually his 100th match.

Suddenly I can understand why he hasn't been dropped all year.

Would someone care to explain the references to Howe's 100th? Who cares? What's the suggestion here?

Lol. We're kidding right? We think that the FD are playing Howe so that we'll have access to his spawn? I have a headache.

Be silly to drop him now and leave him 1 or 2 short.

I think we are playing him because his best games still contribute heavily to us winning. A couple of times this year it's been forward. Most of the time it's been by taking a lot of intercept marks and providing good rebound from down back. He had a huge impact in several of our games this year.

Unfortunately about every 2nd week he's been completely useless, making terrible decisions and weak efforts.

His spawn may have two heads, or two sets of hands. It's a gamble really, though an extra set of hands may come in handy clunking a few marks at full forward.

Most recent article fro the Hun (about our play for Lynch) says Gold Coast are leading the chase at the moment.

That would be good for us, might be able to get back one of their talented mids in a deal

Yes agreed. So let's do a break down of a typical list. Salary estimates based on 2015 AFLPA CBA. Google it for details.

Cap $9.9 million

4 rookies: total $220K

4 1st year draftees: total $260K

4 2nd year draftees: total $280K

4 on minimum base payments: total $324K

Total for 16 players: $1.1 million

Match payments listed as $3500 per game min for min salary players. 2nd year draftees can earn up to $5100 per game. For others it is negotiable. Let's assume $5000 average, which is probably under estimating.

Yearly match payments: $2.5 million

Total so far: $3.6 million

Near and fairest bonuses? Let's assume 300K for ease.

So the remaining 24 players have $6 million between them.

The average salary of the remaining player is then $250K.

Let's assume the top 5 get $700K.

Then the average remaining salary is $131K.

Even if we change it to 4 rookies, 8 draftees and 10 minimum salary instead. Inc match payments and b&f: $4.4 million for 22 players leaving $300k for each of the remaining 18.

Or $155K each of the top 5 get $700K each.

So tell me again why Howe should earn $550,000 or more?

Thanks for that DO

I have said in another thread that the problem with our payments is that our team is nowhere near the performance level of other teams and it is crazy that players are getting equivalent payment. On some basis these players should be paying us.

While it is true that players are worth what the market will pay and a player like Howe does bring some different attributes and may be worth more in a team that can utilise his inconsistent brilliance, or can get some greater value than we think he is worth then you trade. We do need to be smarter with our payments and get some performance improvements from it.

Although every survey in the past showed that money is not the major driver of performance.

Security, stability, work independence and flexibility are usually the main factors of job satisfaction. Non monetry reward fame and recognition are also key factors.

There is a chicken and egg argument but money isnt always the main issue.

Its simple. You have to pay the money. you don't have a choice.

We are just getting crap value

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n

Demonland Trackwatcher Kev Martin was on hand at Gosch's Paddock for Monday's training session and made the following observations. About 38 to 40  players down at training.  BBB walking laps.  Charlie Spargo still in rehab, doing short run throughs.  Christian Salem has full kit on and doing individual work with a trainer. He is is starting to get into some sprints. I cannot see Andy Moniz-Wakefield out there. Jack Viney and Kade Chandler have broken away from the
