AFL National Draft 2014 Picks 2 & 3

Given our failure to get any genuine mids in the trade period, and our obvious lack of depth there, would anyone be surprised if pick 3 was used on the next best available pure midfielder in the draft- a name hasn't been mentioned so much in top 3 predictions?

Apart from Brayshaw and Petracca what are the names being thrown around as genuine midfield talent?

There is a lot of sense in this however if we have first choice of the talls (after grabbing Brayshaw with 2) then I would be more tempted by Wright ahead of McCartin. McCartin reminds me a bit of Hogan where as Wright reminds me more of Mitch. In essence, by drafting Wright, we might have a similar forward structure to what we envisaged having this year, with the additions of Brayshaw, Stretch etc as additions to our midfield depth!

Lever looks like he could be more of a 'prototype' midfielder than a key back. His highlights were pretty impressive, dare I say it, some Fyfe-like moments. Clearly, a one minute video isn't nearly enough for me to have an informed opinion but that never stops me at this time of year.

Yeah I'm very impressed by lever. His size as a mid would be hard to stop. Bomtempelli is around the same size so I could see lever having an impact in 2015.

Looks pretty impressive tbh, I'd be happy with either Laverde or Lever with 3. Instant impact I'd go Lever, but then Laverde looks like he could develop into something elite. Tough decision.

Make no mistake macartin is no spud. There is a reason he has been rated as the number 1 draft pick for such along time. Geelong falcons is a great breeding ground for talent and he is rated right up the top. We would be silly to pass on a hogan macartin combo. KPF are rare and worth a lot our spine will be set with this pickup. Then we look to the middle with brayshaw

Morton was rated highly by many! Remember him? Tambling? People only knock the clubs that ended up taking these kids but they were duds through & through, weak club culture or not, they were nothing compared to their pre draft hype!!!

Not all drafts are rated equally, this one is WEAK!!!!

This years top 5 are without Heeney & Moore. That alone makes a huge difference. And if it's a weak draft, and clearly not a deep one, it means all the top rated kids look that much more impressive against lesser players. This is why performances by youngsters at SANFL etc are highly regarded & why Stretch started to get noticed more towards the end of the year.

Are you saying run and carry isn't important? or did i just misunderstand you and you're saying inside mids are more importnat? Or are you making the same stereotypical stupid response as others muppets that Wines has had a better career to date as your only judgement on the 2?

This years top 5 are without Heeney & Moore. That alone makes a huge difference. And if it's a weak draft, and clearly not a deep one, it means all the top rated kids look that much more impressive against lesser players. I think Wines is better to date & I feel he will always have more of a contribution than Toumpas, in any side. But not once ever have I said Jimmy can't play & would LOVE to be proven wrong re the Wines. But any observer who heard the pre season hype on him would say he's under performed thus far. Especially those same draft 'experts' that rated him ahead. That was my point. Really hope he's a late developer & shows why he was so highly touted of course!

No, sorry, for picks 2 & 3 I'm hoping our recruiters can pull out some guns, whoever they are and whatever their pre draft hype is!!

With our current selectors yes, I'm fairly confident in whatever decision they make, and I'll settle for 'ready to go', it would be a start that's for sure ;-)

I always assumed that St. Kilda would go for a Wright or McCartin simply because of their deficiencies up forward which will be magnified when Nick Riewoldt retires. If you look back to their heyday of around 2009/10 their strength was the combination of Riewoldt/Koschitzke and they never adequately replaced the latter when he started going downhill. That their only trade involved off loading a tall who plays forward and ruck was another clue to what they might be thinking with their first draft pick.

There will certainly be some decent midfield talent around at their next pick but the best of the KPF's will be gone.

People have made very early judgements on Toumpas in comparison to bash/ crash players. That's not what he is. I suspect he'll spend more time on a half forward flank this year with Salem on the other and start to show a bit. For mine, he may never be suited to a midfield role (in the Swallow/ Mitchell mould) but rather, be the bloke who can spot up forward targets as the second last link in the chain. You only had to watch the GF to see how critical it was to not just enter the 50 but do so with precision.

On that, Hogan is a mobile forward as is Iron Gloves Dawes and for that reason I'd seriously look at Wright as the stay at home forward. We will now have some talent underfoot with Garlett, JKH, Salem and perhaps Toumpas.

2. Why is it everyone thinks he is such a monty for us to draft him?

3. Who decided that he is automatically worthy of pick 2 or 3?

4. Does someone have knowledge that the club actually rate Brayshaw at pick 2 or 3 or is it just the media that have decided that, which the majority of supporters and maybe even the club get brainwashed into believing?

Pick 2 & 3 need to be used on drafting two future superstars of the competition, not simply an 18 yr old that has done well against other 18 yr olds and would transition well to the AFL next year, but may become a bit of a plodder compared to others would could pick.

So I'd like someone to convince me he is the real deal (as in superstar in the making) and that we are not simply getting suckered into false hype placed deliberately on players by opposition recruiters.

I am one I think who's been caught in the media hype.

the vids from this year leave a bit to be desired in the top players, not overly impressed with most.

I don't believe much of what we are hearing in the media. From what I can tell, I'd say we know that the Saints are taking McCartin at pick 1 and that Petracca will be there for us to pick on draft day.

My reason for believing this?

The Saints stitching us up on the Frost trade has all the hallmarks of a bit of payback from the Saints and Giants. I'd say we were successful in spooking the Saints away from downgrading to pick 4 to get Mcartin there via a trade with GWS for pick 1. I also believe that the Saints saying they will take Petracca is just another childish attempt to get pay back.

If this turns out to be the case, I'd be taking a midfielder and tall combination of either:

Petracca & Wright

or

Petracca & Lever

or

Petracca & Durdin

I'm pretty sure I have faith in our recruiters to read out the players names and registration numbers correctly - Maybe???

But seriously, the Dees recruiters have done a great job the last 2 drafts and I don't expect that to be any different this year.

Just a matter of figuring out who's going to be taken at pick 1 - that's all.

There is more to a player then their highlights reel. I've got a feeling Roos likes him for his leadership skills and determination.

The best players in the comp aren't the quickest or biggest, they are the hardest working and that's what he brings.
