Another reason free agency sucks

Featured Replies

So, Hawks take Frawley with no penalty.

Yet, if we pick up a free agent, our compo is penalised?

How is that fair??

We should be compo'ed for Frawler the Crawler, and then be allowed to participate in securing free agents without penalty.

Fortune favours the chosen few.

Nothing was wrong with old trade system... Player chose his club & a trade was done....

We can't change it & it favours the top clubs....

Positive though we have picks 2 & 3 ... We need to nail these & get 2 guns like a buddy & roughed & then build a premiership club!

Look at the Rabbitos ..... It can be done!

Pick 3 for a bloke who played poorly all season bar the Essendon game is a good result it seems to me.

Why is there an ad for a piece of $hit coin with the hawthorn premiers on this site!! Get rid of it before I throw up.

A question...

If we were to entice an unrestricted FA to come to us would it be possible for him to sit tight until November the 28th and the delisted free agent period started and then come to us? That would then not effect our compensation or any drafting opportunities.

I don't think you become a delisted free agent if you refuse to resign a contract with your current club. I could be wrong but I'd assume if you don't activate your right to free agency then you actually go into the PSD.

Anyone find it weird he did not mention Paul Roos as a mentor he admired:

“To have mentors like John Longmire, Brett Kirk and Adam Goodes was such a privilege and those habits, values and behaviours are forever with me. “

He mentioned Kirk who was part of the Roos era.....

Yes, get a membership and you want see ads.

As an aside, the site doesn't control the ads. The ads are controlled by you, they troll through your search history to give targeted advertising - I see Masters and Bunnings ads everywhere because I recently bought pretty much everything they sell.

I need a power sander...

Smithy, the avatar might meed a re-work :)

An argument for free agency?

A player from a top 2 goes to a bottom 4 club..... it can happen if you have the money

This is what FA was supposed to do. Its the other bit that wasn't supposed to happen...

Sorry, when was the last time Gold Coast was bottom 4?

And it's not like they're loaded with actual number 1 picks, set to make a rise up the ladder sharpish, dhe to being artificially engineered for success.

It's not just about money - there are extenuating circumstances.

Had I known that those sort of ads were popping up I never would have become a life member

Thanks for the timely reminder Jnr.

Much better. Made me feel dirty looking at the other one!

This particular piece of absurd botch-job is nothing more than a short-sighted bureaucratic SNAFU.

It's almost as is if at the time Free Agency was being designed, the AFL was being led by a reactive, news-cycle driven, ill-informed and paranoid megalomaniac with a total dependence on favoured stakeholders who had equally limited perspectives.

For quick reference, here's a flowchart of the Demetriou era;

Lack of transparency and consultation

->

ill-considered policy

->

criticism and backlash

->

reactive, sulking reductions to consultation and transparency

->

repeat and accelerate

lol - you left out the bit about money and bonuses

I am too lazy to read through all these posts so apologise in advance if this has already been raised...

Why does Hawthorn (or whoever the recipient of the free agent is) not have to pay for the player. Maybe this is a fundamental tenet of free agency so I'm probably just being naive but if Melbourne is compensated with a first round draft pick then why doesn't Hawthorn have to give up it's first round draft pick. This would make it harder for clubs to do these deals and discourage them from throwing silly money at average players just because they can.

Thoughts?

Then it's not free agency. It's effectively trading, with the AFL upgrading picks at certain times

The 'Free' in free agency isn't the nature of the deal - it is the players movement not being hampered.

With that said - if Hawthorn gave up their pick we would have Pick 17, not Pick 3. And we would have to surrender Pick 4 next year if we get Dangerfield.

That would be a terrible result. The teams up the ladder surrendering less than the teams down the bottom for the same player?

That sounds pretty arse about to me.

or ?

we get pick 3 from afl

hawthorn just lose pick 17 (to nobody)

Vlad was a very poor Leader of a very big and popular organization...Those who thought he was wonderful may now realize otherwise.

But Free Agency is here to stay & will probably swing even further towards the players agenda.

We have picks 2-3 this year...They just have to be used correctly...We must draft in 2 or 3 absolute guns.

We simply must get out of the bottom 4 clubs...Frawley was a bargain for Whorethorn, so was Lake.

i never rated Chip as highly as others on here, but if we do not draft A1 players then we lose and go further down..

This situation is the fault of the previous CEO and his template the club worked from, Free Agency is a means to an end for players, attractive clubs win.

CS was just so far off the mark it is laughable.

The MFC can climb but if we keep blowing draft chances it will not happen...All of our high draft picks up to 2012 have been average at best and mostly VFL standard, which is appalling.

They all have a year to prove themselves in my opinion.
