Probably were. It was a tough place to watch that last quarter from. All those misses. Bloody Tony Campbell blazing away and not handpassing to Robbie standing on the goal line unattended. Yeates blazing and missing. Watching that last play like it was in slow motion, as the bile built in the throat and there was a terrible feeling of inevitability as they kicked out and passed the ball down the ground to Buckenara. The free kick against Grinter. Don't even want to raise the rest.

This is the first time I've watched anything from that game ever since. My memory was more forgiving of the kick than it deserved. For some reason I remembered him being on a much more acute angle and that he stumbled which caused his miskick. I was dreaming. It was actually much worse based on this footage. Not too hard an angle and no stumble.

When we played football we didn't get paid 250K + per year and train full time. The worse think is you go back through this season the number of goals we have missed from with in 25m is a little concerning. From memory it was Port in Alice Springs Grimes and Dawes both missed 15m out.

Incorrect, Grimes was 5 metres out on a slight angle to his left. An absolute gimme, as was Jordie's. I said the same with Grimes as I said with Jordie, bet you he will miss. They both did.

I am not trying to be a genius or a smart arse, only someone who watches his team and knows that some of them kick worse than my 4 year old grand daughter.

With the money they get and the practice they have, there is absolutely no excuse, none.

I am sure Roos will get rid of most of the worst.

This won't be popular but Neita wasn't too flash under pressure either. 30 points up (or down) he could slot them from the 50m boundary line. But when we were needing a real Captains goal he was often found wanting.

I saw Greg Parke and Ross Dillon miss a few, but on the other hand Collingwood had Peter Mc Kenna as deadly a kick for goal as anyone whoever played! For a short time we had........ Ray Carr.. excellent game for goal average!

Though we did beat Carlton three times the next year,including in the Finals.

Eishold marked the ball on the point of the goal square. He was whacked by the Hawk defender, ending up 5 yards left of where he took the mark. The Ump ran in from 50 yards behind the play , and put him on a pretty acute angle....about 35 degrees. This made him nervous and he stumbled while kicking the ball. Normally he was a reliable kick for goal. It was a very good mark, by the way.

Campbell and Yates were both reliable shots, too, and both missed, damn it!

He was also partial to a dropped mark, somebody here or at 'ology named him 'ole rubberchest' which was apt.. the title has since moved on to Dawes who is 'ole concrete hands'

So. What is being done about it???

Roos as a football historian may be aware that this is just another aspect of the MFC that needs to be addressed

Ability to act appropriately under pressure

Train under pressure I'm prepared to lose a player through injury at training rather than have them run drills with no pressure

I can't remember the year but early 2000's... Telstra dome sat night v north - got out to a handy 20 odd point lead by end of the first 1/4 only to watch north kick 11.7 in the second to be almost 8 goals up at half time. We slowly came at them and by late in the last got to within a goal. Stephen Powell on a set shot, maybe 15 at the most out and perhaps 15 degree angle - missed. We lost by a point. Didn't sleep that night stewing over it and am still mystified today that he could have missed.

Particularly, when you look at the way teams like Hawthorn kick the football. It's just a totally different league. Over half our current starting 18 have iffy disposal at best. We're just not going to be able to win games, let alone compete, unless we hit basic targets by hand and foot, and can kick gimmes as described above. I completely concur, Redleg, there is absolutely no excuse. These guys are professionals and are paid a lot of money to do what they do. I can't imagine someone like Jordie McKenzie or Jack Grimes would be on anything less than between $100,000 or $200,000. Missing a goal from essentially the goal square is staggering incompetence for a person earning that much money.

Ive said it for a long while...and im not alone...the very first skill and its a non negotiable for anyone playing footy at the top level is an ability to kick.....well. Simple

No matter how hard you work your ar5e off if at the end of it you cant deliver it to a team mate effectively its a waste of everything.

This is , i beleive, a concept Roos is trying to educate all at Melbourne about. He has been successful over his journey not because he particulalry went after 'stars' or 'elite' etc , though a few have come his way , but because he sought out players with good ability but good to better delivery by hand and foot so when in play and they got the ball , something effective resulted.

Contrast that to our lot of clowns ( 50% of current list )

Funny though Darren Bennett was no problem 40-60 out but I can recall him missing plenty from the goal square. Used to say he would be better goin back to the 50 metre line with his opponent on the mark 15 out and kick it over his head instead of missing.

I reckon a lot of our poor delivery is because we are not balanced, undecided and therefore dont hit targets We are always under pressure and that pressure is the same as a set shot.

Gotta get the team used to that high pressure situation all the time.

Look at any game and you see that our players are always under pressure from opponents and our disposal is apalling. Our opponents are not pressured by us and their disposal is way better.

I was always confident that Neita would kick the goals from 50-55m out. But from 30m out ? Not so much.

The trouble is we all talk about but there is myriad of footballers (not just at our club) who just can't kick.

This is what make Hawthorn stand apart from other clubs. They have quite a few footballer who I consider average but these footballers can all kick which means they get full value for money every time the ball in their hands.

Priddis of WCE - although he has slightly improved, I still say the best way to win against the Eagles is give the ball to Priddis 40 times and you can throw Masten in there as well.
