Your parents would be proud of the time you spent with young kids,to give them some kind of australian influence Mcqueen.

My son did volunteer work and its the proudest moment of my life,i can imagine the feelings your parents had to the experience you gave those kids.

Great post mate.

BTW,looks like you put on some pudding whilst you were there.

Besides being a grotty old left footer,i hope youve at least lost your boofhead?

I lived and worked in Zambia and the DRC for the best part of 6 years. Some of the things I've seen and experienced are quite amazing (and disturbing) when looking back at them.

I have no idea what you do there Ascobar (I was in mining) but some of the more satisfying things we did as expats were to visit childrens orphanage's of which there were plenty of. We'd take along a few bags of maize meal and whole chickens which as you would know makes up the main staple diet - along with Kapenta (dried minnow like fish). We used to take the Sherrin along as well and taught the kids how to kick and handball and eventually tried to run some training drills. It was highly amusing to say the least.

I've dug up a few photos of myself and some kids from about ten years ago now.

Nice pics. DRC must have been pretty minded blowing. Were you based in Kinshasa? Definitely a place I'd like to visit when I'm back in Ethiopia. Here's something random I saw not far from Addis Ababa just before coming home, make of it what you will!

Not exactly the safest place in the world.. When were you there?

In and out of there in '03 - '05.

We used to travel up eastern Zambia and then speed boat over Lake Mweru to where we had a contract. It was deemed far too unsafe to make a direct path through DRC straight for the site - even with a wallet full of $USD10 notes to assist passage through police and immigration check points.

Have you been there yourself?

No, just what I read about it in the media.. Although for many years there have been very few journos willing to report from there.

I used to fish the Ovens around Porpunka on a regular basis. Great part of the work. Always called in at Brown Brothers and a local cheese factory on the way through

Let me Guess ???

1: A New Training Aid For AFL Goal Umpires so they can do away with score reviews .

2: The AFL's Latest scheme for Sunday Night Games.

3: A new Training base for Carlton players so they cant be watched whilst training therefore saving their coach the embarrassment. ^_^

At least I tried

Dont know where norway is,never been on a plane.

Also not sure about pig farmers.{Josh}dairy farmers are definitely smarter.

That's a big call, everyone knows pigs are one of the smartest animals on earth so there farmers must be fairly switched on. Seems logical to me?

Maybe the animals are smarter,so as to help the farmer?

They can be quite clever. They can be quite dumb also. I love it though, love working with any livestock. It's great to live in the country I would hate to raise my young family in the city.

Yeah same,When visitors stay for week over summer, their kids learn to live without sugar{city life} and realise that throwing rocks into the river is good fun and helping the old uncle milk cows is quite well paid and is better than computer games and mcdonalds.

My kids are pretty good adults and know everybody in the district, the will help locals of all ages and conversate with them.

These poor city kids have no real friends and real life experiences,i feel so sorry for em.

Dairy farmers have been tested regulary and are proven to be the smartest farmers in australia.

Your not gonna let this dairy farmers are smarter thing go are you? But I must point out I'm not a private pig farmer, I work for a large pork producer in a management roll. Not that that makes me smarter, just not a classic country pig farmer in case you were wondering.

Also I'm happy to concede pig farmers are pretty uneducated, I've seen some "interesting" employees in my time.

I live approximately 5kms from the MCG. Would love to live in the country though - had enough of city life.

Consider a swap? Mansfield is beautiful this time of year. Plenty of snow on Buller. Sorry I can't lend you the Range Rover, it had to go for the BMW X5.

Sad and true.

What's the problem? Don't all Melbourne supporters drive Beemers now? I thought its was compulsory, well it is in Mansfield.

    MEANWHILE by Whispering Jack

… meanwhile, at about the same time that Narrm was putting its feet on the accelerator to obliterate the long-suffering Euro-Yroke combination, I heard someone mention in passing that Kuwarna was leading Waalitj Marawar by a whopping 46 to 1 halfway through the second quarter of their game over in Adelaide. “What is football coming to?” I asked myself.  In front of my eyes, the Demons were smashing it through the midfield, forcing turnovers and getting the footy to their forwards who w

HEAVEN OR HELL by The Oracle

Clashes between Melbourne and St Kilda are often described as battles between the forces of heaven and hell. However, based on recent performances, it’s hard to get excited about the forthcoming match between these two sides. It would be fair to say that, at the moment, both of these teams are in the doldrums. The Demons have become the competition’s slow starters while the Saints are not only slow to begin, they’re not doing much of a job finishing off their games either. About the only th

    THE BLOW by Whispering Jack

Narrm’s finals prospects took a crushing blow after the team’s insipid performance at Optus Stadium against a confident Waaljit Marawar in the first of its Doug Nicholls Round outings for 2024.  I use the description “crushing blow” advisedly because, although the season is not yet at it’s halfway mark, the Demons have now failed abysmally in two of their games against teams currently occupying bottom eight places on the ladder.  The manner in which these losing games were played out w

HALF FULL by KC from Casey

It was a case of the Casey Demons going into a game with a glass half full in their match up against the Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields on Saturday. As the list of injured and unavailable AFL and VFL listed players continues to grow and with Melbourne taking all three emergencies to Perth for the weekend on a “just in case” basis, its little brother was always destined to struggle. Casey was left with only eight AFL listed players from who to select their team but only two - an out-of-form
