Changes for round 16 v Fremantle

I spoke to two players who did ask me to swear anonymity, but they said it was difficult to be criticised so publicly from VFL level.

Was also told Roos hasn't attended a single VFL game this year.

Roos said recently on 360 he had attended that weekends Casey game.

Im writing an email to the club tomorrow about Brett Allisons player reviews

There is no way it is constructive to constantly say negative things about the players on the club website or anywhere else public

Give them home truths behind closed doors by all means, but not on the MFC website for the whole world to read

Agree. Show me another team or club website doing this. Just keep it one line.

"Played key role. Executed on skills. Effectively tagged. Needs to work on development. Ready for next step up." etc

That's an awful review. You may as well not do it at all.

If you are attempting to foster an environment of honest feedback then I don't see how these reviews would cause any issue.

I find the reviews really good because they give me an idea of why people aren't getting a game and what the coaching staff is looking for from each player. Otherwise you end up with the situation like previous years where you have no idea why players aren't getting a game. Now I know that Blease isn't getting a game because he's not working hard enough defensively and that Fitzpatrick isn't because he needs to compete in the air better. There are plenty of positive reviews, like Georgiou. He had a bad review against Coburg, but has had excellent reviews over the last few weeks and now we know that he deserves a spot in the AFL except that he needs to wait until a spot opens up.

I don't find the reviews to be negative. They are just straightforward.

Also interesting that the topic was raised by OLC, who has 5 posts. 4 have been about Casey and the other was giving a detailed defence of Sam Blease.

In terms of selection, if the rumour is true that JKH isn't in the squad, I'm not sure what is going on at the moment. Had a good game for Casey (at least a much improved game from his previous weeks), we're lacking a crumbing forward (amongst other things of course), we have about 8 players we could drop this week, and to be fair to him he never really should have been dropped. He should play this week.

I'd say the stint with Casey is more about managing him, physically, during his first season, than it is about form or talent.

Roosy himself has said that the kids are tired.

Says the poster who is always first to trash the players, club, coach etc.

Michael Evans: Michael played midfield and had 13 possessions. He looked really flustered and distracted at times during the game. He was often by himself at stoppages, which is certainly not the way we want to play football. So he needs to really adjust that part of his game, if he wants to press for senior selection.

Was it just me or did anyone else laugh at this particular review?

I'm going to go against the general vibe here and say that I really enjoy Allison's reviews and they are by far the best content on the MFC website. For too long the reviews were far too sugar coated for my liking.

These players are grown ups and big boys. They can handle it. If they can't handle a bit of public scrutiny they wouldn't have been drafted in the first place.

It's not like these reviews are personally attacking players.

I'm sure the players hear far worse things behind closed doors, and I like that we are finally being given honest feedback on players' performances.

As AoB said, it allows us plebs to understand why someone is or isn't getting a game. It also shows me that we are a serious organisation and we aren't compromising on results and development.

Whilst I appreciate the honesty ( as opposed to the fluff and nonsense we have got in the past regarding Casey performances) - I do find it a contrast to Roos stated approach - note his comments early in the year that many of players needed a cuddle due to past scars. Again - as much as I like the honesty and insight into the thinking - could anyone even contemplate the same critiquing of the senior team ? It wouldn't happen. It also makes me rethink of last year where there were rumblings about Neelds approach to the players. I am not saying that players don't deserve criticism and honest appraisal but I am not sure that it needs to be aired for all of us to see. I'm not sure I am 100% comfortable with it.

I will re-pose the question.

If we are comfortable with this form of critiquing of our players at Casey - why is there not the same analysis of our senior group ?

Because most of us attend the games or watch the games and we form our own assessment of the players. If the players do what they are asked they get a good report.

So we have an anonymous internet forum poster quoting 2 anonymous players vs a senior trusted AFL coach making conflicting statements??

Now who should I believe??

I think it is different 'nut', for one most of us don't get the chance to watch Casey play with the exception of the odd TV game which seems to be one a year. It's good to at least get a feel for how the players are going. I really value these reports and it's the only thing I look forward to on the website each week, the rest is all fluff & puff pieces which don't interest me in the slightest.

We pretty much all watch the AFL game and can draw our own conclusions.

my major problem with the reports is that there has been a constant theme with Roos - The scars left on the players after so many years of getting punched/the playing group needs to know its not as bad as it thinks it is/ need to rebuild confidence and self belief. He even mentioned the need to give the players a "hug". His themes have been a direct contract to Neeld who seemed to be all about "tough love". The Allison approach in the report ( the publication of it) seems to be more in line with the last coach than the current.

I have no problem with this critiquing of the players in the confines of the club - but do you think that this public critique of Evans in necessary ? "He looked really flustered and distracted at times during the game. He was often by himself at stoppages, which is certainly not the way we want to play football. So he needs to really adjust that part of his game, if he wants to press for senior selection."

Or this critique of Michie " Viv battled away in the midfield, which was clearly outpointed by the opposition. He knows exactly what he needs to work on to put his name up for selection, so it’s time to start working at that.

I will rephrase the question about the senior group - we all watch the games but have you heard Roos be as frank in his assessment of a player as Allison is with the boys at Casey ? He has a go at the group in general. I thought it interesting that at the Sunday presser after the game - he talked about turnovers and he said the worst of it is that the 3 worst turnovers were by best disposers at the club - he could have named them but he didn't.

Everyone at work can see the job I am doing but I don't have my performance review made public.

Which would be fine if in fact Roos comments were not hearsay and the quote by Robbe57 potentially incorrect. I have watched all of the Roos 360 segments and i freely admit i might be wrong but the only reference i can recall where Roos discusses watching Casey is him (on a couple of shows) mentioning doing so via 'the tapes'.

I have to say i have enjoyed the Allison reviews however i have no doubt the MFC players would not feel to wrapt about how scathing they can be and i am not as comfortable with them as i initially was. It is worth noting that in Arrow's post about this he didn't say the players were in revolt or anything but that a couple were not super impressed. And nor would they be.

For those that say they should toughen up i take up Nutbeans well made point - if MFC players in the two's are subjected to honest appraisals why not the seniors? You could argue that such honest appraisals might give opposition teams a leg up but i don't reckon that argument holds much water given the amount of opposition scouting and analysis that goes on.

I just don't see them as scathing, perhaps that says more about the way I look at things.

So long as it's about performance I don't have a problem, if he started calling some players spuds then I would.

In short - make the point - just don't make it publicly.

I'll ask the question - who exactly does it benefit ? Certainly not the player. Its just for us - the supporters.

Yeah fair point. Perhaps they are critical rather than scathing, which is perhaps why i can't quite make up my mind about them. That said a couple of player reviews have been pretty close to the line between scathing and critical i would have thought (the Evans one a case in point)

They certainly make good reading and do have the benefit (which is perhaps the aim?) of making a clear point about what Roos demands from the whole list and what he values.

That one is getting close to the line 'binman', agree with you there.

On another point but following on the reviews it seems there are a group of players at Casey struggling to meet the expectations of the FD.

I agree. I think those who played well should be reviewed under a category of 'players of the week'. Those who haven't played well should just have stats.

When a player does play well - say JKH this week, you could put in his review the things he did well that he hadn't been doing the previous weeks.

If the feeling is a player needs a public spray on the website they'd find a way to get it in.

We have heard Roos talk about first year players expectations to just settle in and learn how to train and be professional. Then we hear about James Harmes lack of defensive running. Something doesn't quite compute.

Do it for the 22 blokes running around for the red and the blue as well and I have no problem with it.

No-one has convinced me of the necessity for a coach to publically evaluate fringe players NOT playing AFL while excluding senior players or even fringe players playing AFL.

AFLW has been a benchmark when it comes to inclusivity and a safe workplace.  The team will run out in a specially designed guernsey for this game and also the following week

    REDEEMING by Meggs

It was such a balmy spring evening for this mid-week BNCA Pink Lady match at our favourite venue Ikon Park between two teams that had not won a game since round one.   After last week’s insipid bombing, the DeeArmy banner correctly deemanded that our players ‘go in hard, go in strong, go in fighting’, and girl they sure did!   The first quarter goals by Alyssa Bannan and Alyssia Pisano were simply stunning, and it was 4 goals to nil by half-time.   Kudos to Mick Stinear.

How will Mick Stinear and his dwindling list of fit and available Demons respond to last week’s 65-point capitulation to the Bombers, the team’s biggest loss in history?   As a minimum he will expect genuine effort from all of his players when Melbourne takes on the GWS Giants at Ikon Park this Thursday.  Happily, the ground remains a favourite Melbourne venue of players and spectators alike and will provide an opportunity for the Demons to redeem themselves.
