Tom McDonald?

His rise is remarkably similar to David Neitz (although still a long way to go before he catches the great man) but the thing that I’m so impressed by with him is his engine. For such a big man he can run so hard for so long.Ā

Side note, when he was lining up I think for his first shot on Saturday the commentators were building him up and building him up as a great set shot and I was yelling at the screen telling them to shut up. Of course he shanked it.Ā

I see a massive bag for him some time this year.Ā

I don't. I see him kicking 3-4 goals every game until he retires. He's not the kind of sledgehammer that you need to be to kick bags. He's a dynamo; he just keeps on ticking. And as reliably as a dynamo, he will always reap rewards.

I reckon he is THE consistently best contested mark I have seen at MFC, Ox included. Ā

Amazing strength and ball flight reading.Ā

Not sure he is better than the OX. but he is damn good. We haven't had a player since Neitz who comes close. unfortunately Jessie is grabbing themselves with the same regularlyĀ but will i think. Easy to forget he is still young.

TMac has something others don't as well. He has a unique ability to come from behind without making body contact and marking almost uncontested. Standard play is to keepĀ your forward under the ball or manourve him with your body.Ā

As Prodee pointed out at the time, that peanut Bretron actually criticisedĀ him for it in the first crows game - even though he took the mark!

He also must be super strong as he often holds of players with one hand.

Ā

The ironing board that happens to be really really good at footy.

Missed 5 games and is somehow only 13 goals off the coleman. That is unbelievable and should it continue, he has to be in the AA squad and for goals per game would be in the side.

That is absolutely extraordinary in modern footy, the trajectory of this guy.

The guys on the Deebrief podcast mentioned that a few weeks back when they interviewed David. I think one of them actually yells out Neita during games when T-Mac clunks one!

Tommy hasn't been all that long in the role really

Next year...more settled list etc..more settled game...who knows ;)

Edit

Funny though.. when drafted... was a fwd ;)

I can’t wait until our mids consistently lower their eyes first going into 50 and hit up TmacĀ or HogesĀ if they are on the lead, with the long kick to a contest as the second option. Ā If we learn to do that we’ll be the no 1 scoring team for the next 5 years and Tmac and Hoges will be all time greats!

I was about to say I hope TMACĀ holds up in his old age, but googled his age and realised he's only 25. Im shocked, he looks and acts like he is 27/28

never doubted him...never thought he'd become "plugger mac" tho...

isn't he something ridic like 31.7 from set shots this year?

I don't even know what I said.Ā  But I'm sure it was right.

It is also modern footy, the days of key forwards kicking 5 or 6 plus are diminishing. Perhaps The Tomahawk is a recent aberration. But 3 or 4 is the norm for a good days work for a key forward these days. Coaches don’t want a too predictable target and pathway to goal. I think if Tommy was one out in the square back in the 70’s he just might have kicked a few bags.Ā

I wonder if T Mac and Jesse are having their own little friendly battle for the leading goalkicker award?

Jesse on 42 and T Mac on 40

And Jesse had a 5 game head start.

Could get interesting this round! If we hit our straps vs GC there could be some bags on the way.Ā

Jesse’s first half of the year has been a whole lot better than his second half. I don’t know if he’s been carrying something but he’s definitely not as dynamic as he was earlier in the year.Ā

I could see it.

Tom's like: "I'll give you a month's lead. That should make things interesting, kid."

Something along the lines that he would NEVER make a forward....

Warren Dean andĀ Earl Spalding were pretty damn good. Tmac is too, no doubtĀ

Tom doesn't get the love he deserves.Ā  He's a gun.

I've bumped this thread not to knock those that bagged him but to highlight how easy it is to judge players too quickly and how successful the move to the forward line has been.

He's been a completely different player across 2017-2018. People were right to knock him prior to that. He was a turnover merchant with ball in hand, but a very hard running and good 1v1 defender. As a forward, he is an absolute star and you're right. He probably hasn't received the accolades for that, that he deserves.

He's (TMc) still got some improvement left in him, I think.

I'm old enough to remember Greg Parke. I think he was the consistently best contested mark I have seen, playing back in the day when most marks were contested because of the man-on-man style of game played back then. His kicking though...

Dean and Spalding were good CHFs, but never the strong contested marks of Tommy.

Greg Parke was the great white hope, for rednblue bluebygone days.

Ā

What, better than Trevor Barker?Ā

Not many better than him.

  • DRAFT: The Next Generation

It was not long after the announcement that Melbourne's former number 1 draft pick Tom Scully was departing the club following 31 games and two relatively unremarkable seasons to join expansion team, the Greater Western Giants, on a six-year contract worth about $6 million, that a parody song based on Adele's hit "Someone Like You" surfaced on social media. The artist expressed lament over Scully's departure in song, culminating in the promise, "Never mind, we'll find someone like you," although I suspect that the undertone of bitterness in this version exceeded that of the original.
