From the Barrett article:

The outcome was as predictable as a promise made by an opposition leader being broken when sitting in the prime minister’s chair.

Interesting seeing as his brother is Press Secretary for one T Abbott......

Is that so!!

Thing about Scally what happens when he's contacted up there isno way the gws will want to pay him a million plus or even half a million he will need to take a huge pay cut.

Scully will have no qualms about walking out of there for a team willing to pay more.

Yeh but who and why would any other club pay more, u don't pay good coin for your taggers.

Anything

And I still can't work out why GWS payed such massive overs for such an underwhelming player as Scully.

I think you'll find this has been discussed at depth in various other Demonland threads with the majority view being that Tom was the set of steak knives thrown in at the last minute to get the Phil Scully deal over the line.

One thing about both Watts & Scully is that neither of them have physically developed much from the day they were drafted, compared to their peers. That's nobody's fault, they just don't have that sort of body. It's something that couldn't have been foreseen at the time.

And with the "rolling maul" style of 2014 footy, there has never been more emphasis on physical strength than there is now.

The year they were going to be drafted, Tom Scully and Jack Trengove were wheeled out on the Footy Show besides Jonathan Brown and Barry Hall. Sam Newman compared the bodies of Scully and Trengove with those of Hall and Brown and just said: "You think you're gonna be able to match it with these guys?"

Evidently he was right to ask that.

doesn't take much brain power to make that statement regardless of who your brother is

still, probably took barrett a few hours to think that one up

What it does prove beyond doubt is that "Tanking" on any level to increase the value of draft pick nominations is just not worth even considering...

The Gamble is way to high. And not smart at all...

I can. I reckon his signing was a symbol, more than anything. It showed that GWS could get anyone they wanted, even if he was a highly valued number one draft pick. You've got to remember that the truth was rather different - no one wanted to go to GWS.

And that first video above, the one against Freo. Wow. We moved the ball beautifully from half back. I wish we'd simply readjusted our defensive structures under a new coach, rather than throwing the baby out with the bath water and removed the attacking flair. Ah well.

By far his most impressive highlights weren't the goals he kicked.

He was actually using a bit of pace.

Spot on, CB. You can just see his confidence there. I can't remember him having that, but it shows he had it once upon a time. The handball one-twos, really great stuff. I reckon it'd be worth showing Jack some of that.

The debate continues to rage but irrespective of how poor Naitanui's form has been recently, he does have that ability to quickly turn a game that I haven't seen yet from Jack Watts. Otherwise, both would be regarded as disappointing under-achievers given their high draft positions and that will remain the case as long as we have drafts. Just look at Whitfield, O'Rourke, Plowman and Toumpas from a couple of years ago - although we should still be prepared to give them some time.

Scully is the one who really has managed to escape scrutiny. Given his pay packet, I find it extraordinary that anyone can talk up his performance against Gold Coast. Firstly, you don't pay a million bucks plus a year for a tagger, let alone one whose opponent kicks two goals, gets 30 disposals and lays eleven tackles in a 40 point win while getting only 6 kicks and 10 handballs himself. I put that down as a massive fail when compared to Ablett's 19 disposals against Jordie McKenzie (with some help) up on the Coast last year.

The million dollar man should be under the microscope because every week there are teammates out there who are paid far less but contributing far more to their team's effort than Scully and how he's managed two top 5 b & f's in his two years at that club is quite frankly , a complete joke.

Except if you're Hawthorn in 2004. Or Collingwoood the following year. Or West Coast in 2007. The list goes on and on. Sorry, but we are more an exception than the rule. Any semi-competently run sporting club around the world would have at the very least been playing finals after all these picks. We've just been scarred by complete drafting and development failure.

Why doesn't that surprise me?

Fair points but i disagree.

Whorethorn were the exception.

Saw Bleasy a couple of times too.

yep just saw the stats for port v gws. Half way through the 3rd quarter Scully 5 possessions.

The ultimate indignation for Sheedy who thought he was shafting us. Did us the greatest favour ever!!!

That [censored] Dwayne Russell just said that there will again be speculation that NN is carrying an injury this week, after another lean second half. I know DR hates MFC, but his views are endemic of the footy media. If NN struggles, it's because of injury. If Watts is struggling, he should be dropped.

  • PREVIEW: Carlton

Good evening, Demon fans and welcome back to the Demonland Podcast ... it’s time to discuss this week’s game against the Blues. Will the Demons celebrate Clayton Oliver’s 200th game with a victory? We have a number of callers waiting on line … Leopold Bloom: Carlton and Melbourne are both out of finals contention with six wins and eleven losses, and are undoubtedly the two most underwhelming and disappointing teams of 2025. Both had high expectations at the start of participating and advancing deep into the finals, but instead, they have consistently underperformed and disappointed themselves and their supporters throughout the year. However, I am inclined to give the Demons the benefit of the doubt, as they have made some progress in addressing their issues after a disastrous start. In contrast, the Blues are struggling across the board and do not appear to be making any notable improvements. They are regressing, and a significant loss is looming on Saturday night. Max Gawn in the ruck will be huge and the Demon midfield have a point to prove after lowering their colours in so many close calls.

  • REPORT: North Melbourne

I suppose that I should apologise for the title of this piece, but the temptation to go with it was far too great. The memory of how North Melbourne tore Melbourne apart at the seams earlier in the season and the way in which it set the scene for the club’s demise so early in the piece has been weighing heavily upon all of us. This game was a must-win from the club’s perspective, and the team’s response was overwhelming. The 36 point win over Alastair Clarkson’s Kangaroos at the MCG on Sunday was indeed — roovenge of the highest order!

  • CASEY: Werribee

The Casey Demons remain in contention for a VFL finals berth following a comprehensive 76-point victory over the Werribee Tigers at Whitten Oval last night. The caveat to the performance is that the once mighty Tigers have been raided of many key players and are now a shadow of the premiership-winning team from last season. The team suffered a blow before the game when veteran Tom McDonald was withdrawn for senior duty to cover for Steven May who is ill.  However, after conceding the first goal of the game, Casey was dominant from ten minutes in until the very end and despite some early errors and inaccuracy, they managed to warm to the task of dismantling the Tigers with precision, particularly after half time when the nominally home side provided them with minimal resistance.
