Players to target at the end of the year

Recommended Posts

10 posts in a row, dee-luded. Wow. I'm impressed - or concerned, not sure which.

I've merged them all in to one mega-post, for everyone's enjoyment.

lol

Here I was thinking he'd finally learned to use the multi-quote button.

Throw everything at Prestia IMHO. It's a long shot but I think we have to try.

This is where we head into stmj as a glorious genius because if we are to get Prestia/Danger/insertgreatplayerhere it will most likely be because of Frawley leaving a hole in our salary cap and a top 5 pick behind.

I just want the surety of it though...

But I can't have it.

So I am comfortable in the knowledge that whatever happens we will be fine.

Unless we don't recruit well...

But that's a different thread.

Surely you're more comfortable, (even if not 100% comfortable) in knowing we are in much better hands as a club and a much more attractive option for players with the obvious changes in personell, list changes and the way we're now playing..

I won't argue with the genius comment.

The possibility of bringing a genuine A grade mid to this club would clearly be hugely increased with the departure of Frawley

I think what I think about most is the future of the club and how we're going to jump from being where we are now, to one of the dominant clubs of the AFL.

The most important question regarding the Frawley situation is this: If he stays, will he be a genuine leader and inspire this next young group of players in Viney, Tyson, JKH, Salem etc to push themselves to a level they never knew existed? Will he be the catalyst to inspire further positive change at this club?

My answer is no, he won't. He doesn't possess the personality not does he command that from the players. He's been in our system for too long and he doesn't get it.

When you view the situation in that context, and then think about the pick we'd be getting for him and the potential return for it. Which could be anything from a star mid/player who has the ability to POSITIVELY inspire and influence our young brigade and club or a gem in the draft who might take some time but could be the player we need to help take us forward, the choice is easy..

Frawley is a passenger. He always will be. There is no chance of him being our 'Luke Hodge, Buddy Franklin, Gary Ablett', (insert any genuine list/club chaner). Sure aspects of his game are handy and he's a big monster of a bloke, but if you think about what our club is DESPERATE for... Then you'd be welcoming the prospect of him leaving.

Paul Roos has stated we're crying out for midfield game breakers and class. If that doesn't say to you that we'll be going hard again for players at the end of the year, I don't know what will. I know he's said he'd like Frawley to stay but I'm not so sure that's the honest truth. He'd know we still need to bring in fresh minds, strong personalities and genuine club changers.

Demonland, it's time to let go of some of your beloved players for growth of our club. Realise that we need to take these opportunities if we want to see Melbourne rise strongly. Be confident that we can nab a star or at least pick well and develop that player the right way with fantastic coaches and leaders.

It's time.

And for the for every other poster out there who continually brings up the old, 'well look at what early draft picks have done for the club in recent years'..... Give it a [censored] rest.

If you STILL can't see that our FD was clearly absolutely incompetent back then (which included coaches, development coaches, recruiters and even the leaders of our club at the time), then you'd realise the draft picks we inherited and their performance for us/performances still for us WERE A DIRECT RESULT of the failed FD.

New FD, competent coaches, (some of the best in Roos and Stone), real leaders, (Cross, Jones and Dawes) and a beefed up recruiting team with a very highly regarded head recruiter.

It's clear as [censored] day that our draft picks are in a lot better hands these days.

I have always agreed with the notion that we will be fine if he leaves - there is even a possibility we would be better, but it is not a fait accompli, and that is why, if Frawley turned around and said 'Paul, I'm signing with the Dees,' we will keep him.

Yes, I'm sure Roos would keep him..

But I'm also sure the ammunition we'd receive from

Frawley would also be on Roos' mind.

I definitely don't think it's a 'must keep Frawley at all costs' type situation.

I wouldn't call our midfield the worst, but certainly ain't the best. The thing is we have young mids that are still learning (barring the obvious N Jones, Cross, Vince), guys like Tyson, Viney, Salem, blah blah, will only get better. It's not like we have a mature aged midfield and they aren't doing the job, our case at the moment is that we have a young midfield that are starting to tire. In a few years we'll have a ripper midfield, just you watch.

rubbish

Jones Viney Tyson Cross Vince

You will note that there are only 5 players there. Therein lies the problem. The other part is that two of the five are pups and haven't developed consistent performances yet.

We have a midfield nucleus of 3 players, one of whom is 31 years old. Our midfield still stinks.

We're currently last in clearances and lack classy finishers.

It's not a great endorsement for our midfield.

What's really sad is I think we have progressed miles from last year - but apparently not !

It's not entirely surprising, we are essentially relying on Viney and Tyson to win our clearances, both are around the 20 game mark, when they get close to the 100 game mark and we have a well developed Jesse Hogan up front we will be a very tough prospect

I reckon we need another couple of really good mids though, for us to be a finals team blokes like Terlich, M.Jones, Bail and co have to be seriously struggling to get a game, I reckon we will draft petracca with our first pick and trade the other, offer Prestia a massive deal to leave the suns, or Dangerfield big dollars, Dangerfield improves our midfield 20% the moment he walks in, they can have Toumpas and pick 5 for him

Can you name a worse midfield?

St Kilda might be, GWS right at this moment, Richmond? Carlton?

He's not far off...

Meth Coast's midfield is overated and very undersized, a lot left to Priddis.

I raised the possibility of Vickery about 4-6 weeks ago.

I wouldn't be surprised or dismayed if Roos made a run for him.

Definitely a Roos-type pick up.

His value is at an all-time low so we could get him cheap, he clearly has attributes that he should be using a lot more effectively, has worn out his welcome at his original club, and he looks like he desperately needs a change of scenery.

Go Roosy. Get him.

Even if he's only an extra ruck and forward option for the next 2 years.

I'd back Roos to get more out of him than any other coach.

The computer says no.

Sylvia, Mclean, Morton Scully were all affected by poor coaching and development. Trengove aswell but injury has halted him a bit aswell. Toumpas is doing what he should have last year and thats developing in the twos. I cant wait to see what Roos will do to Trenners and Toump.

I think we just need to back our coaching staff on this one this time. Go through the draft and get Petracca and Brayshaw.

I could see Petracca making an instant impact up forward for us straight away.

I personally think 'poor coaching and development' is a cop-out. It's not the coaches fault that Sylvia was lazy, McLean was slow, Morton was soft and Scully couldn't kick. All those players have played under at least 2 coaches and none of them have done any better outside the MFC, in fact I'd argue they have been worse. I think the facts are they just weren't that good. You can say bad drafting but at the time they were considered good picks, which is sort of what I was getting at. A top 5 pick should get you a gun but often it doesn't. Roos has almost a 100% track record with trades over many years in footy so I'd back him to turn one of the picks into a golden trade once more.

i saw something about Melbourne being interested in Carlisle from the bombers. Would love him!

Ive never been impressed by him

He's been great when down back. So played well when in the backline..

I heard that he didnt take the drugs, but if he did, no deal.

Would kill for Carlisle.

I was hoping for him pre-draft, but went on to be surprised how good he has been at times at Essendon.

Being forced forward hasn't helped him, but the kid can be an elite defender.

I'd give our 2nd rounder for him, maybe more.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
