I once flew on a small regional airline in the USA whose name I have forgotten. Scariest weirdest flight i've been on. Flew from San Francisco to Reno. Flight delayed 4 hours due to bad weather. Then they decided to take off but only with half the passenger load since the weather was still bad over the Sierra Nevada mountains. Silly me volunteered as one of the 15 passengers for the flight in the 30 seater turbo prop. The flight was smooth till we got to the mountains then it was hell. The plane was pitching and rolling violently, engines were screaming, some passengers became sick. The flight attendant, a beefy campy guy with a Dennis Lilley moustache was strapped into the jump seat attached to the closed cockpit door and facing the passengers. When the weather got really bad he started laughing loudly like he was demented and eye balling the passengers with wild eyes. Then no kidding, he bellowed out at the top of his voice"we all gonna die" several times and continued with his maniac laugh till we cleared the mountains and storm. He then went back to work, helped clean the mess and served us beer as if nothing happened. I was very glad to get off that flight.

Years ago we used to fly United to Hawaii, back then they were a really good airline but they just went downhill over time and are the pits now. My son flew to LA with them a couple of years ago and he said the still had the same planes and flight crew they had back in the 80's.

I've flown Emirates a couple of times and they can be really good or really bad; same with most Airlines; flew to Morocco with them and some sections were horrendous.

I would actually say it's not that they went downhill, it's just everyone else improved and they stayed the same. I flew United to the US in 2000 and then went back on them again last year and I swear I reckon it was the same plane with zero changes. Same seats and same crappy communal screen in the middle that had static in the top right hand corner!

I like any airline that lands safely at the other end!

"Did you enjoy your flight sir?"

"No, but i am here....See you in 8 weeks"

Flying in the back of any plane sucks, no matter what the paint job.

Seems your complaint is about time delay which I agree is annoying. But the quickest rout via Guangzhou to LA is 26 hours when you can fly direct with other airlines in 13. If time matters.

Ok, understand... time shouldn't have been an issue... it only mattered in this instance because they cancelled the flight without telling anyone and that resulted in us losing our first night's accommodation in LA plus the fact that the time of arrival (when we did eventually get there) meant we also were too lagged to do anything worthwhile the day we arrived... this was my son's first trip to the US and it pretty much screwed the mood for the first few days.

There is nothing that can be said to fix that problem hardtack.

I understand the depth of your feeling.

I would be doing similar to you.

I took my daughter when she was six.

If I had put her through that I am sure she would have had a down graded experience.

My wife and I are taking our Grand daughter next year If I get that experience for her I will be way less than happy.

If that happens OD, I'd be more than happy to pass on my correspondence for you to use as a template... not that it helped me much.

Flew with Southern some years ago as the only western passengers on a near empty plane . The staff were same as any air lines and the outcomes the same we took off, got the peanuts and food tray, landed, "thank you for flying" etc

I read a business report last week which in commenting on Quantas position stated that most overseas airlines were doing well, making profit, managing cost etc. The Chinese market is growing although in a controlled economy.

They may be anticipating a gap in the Aussie market if Quantas continues its current strategies.

The sponsorship will provide exposure for them at minimal cost and could develop if the team and their market continues to grow.

"There's nine hundred million of them in the world today You'd better learn to like them, that's what I say"

How true!

To think the song was written back in 1980. 900,000,000 in the whole world back then not just China.

The population of China alone is now nearly 1,400,000,000 and then how many Chinese people living outside of China! Wow. The number of Chinese people has jumped by nearly 500,000,000 in just over 30 years. Holy mother of chow. That increase is almost the same as the current populations of the USA and Indonesia put together and they are the 3rd and 4th highest populations by country in the world respectively.

I for one welcome China Southern and all our Chinese supporters!

I'm sure that it was China Southern airlines that I flew with from Beijing to Guangzhou in 1996. It was white knuckle stuff and signaled the beginning of the end for my relationship at the time. In retrospect, thank you China Southern Airlines.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
