No "elite" players at Melbourne

Featured Replies

Would prefer an elite team.

Of course we do not have any elite players on our list at the present time.

The MFC has been so far off elite in all areas for the last 7 years.

The strategy put in place failed in every way.

Have spent the last hour trying to find a reason why you are wrong wyl.

zero reasons so far !

Hoping with some help that we have Grimes and Nathan Jones in this list of "statistically elite" players at the end of this year. I can see Grimes averaging 25 touches from half back and Jones the same in the middle and doing more with them this year.

I expect Viney and Hogan to join them in time. Plus I'm pretty excited about Dom Tyson. Can't write off Trengove, Toumpas or Watts either.

Frawley is an elite stopping defender but probably doesn't get enough footy to make this list and Clark is a unique talent.

That would make 10 elite players.

Since we don't have any elite players perhaps we could recruit some more Non-elites like Sandilands, Judd, Jon Brown, Matt Priddis, Jordan Lewis, Nic Nat, to the club....?

Rance, Shaw and Monfries...please...

Rance is a good one because other teams deliberately let him get the ball when the Tigers are chipping it around in hope of a turnover. He's an above average full back at stopping key forwards but it's miles from elite. I can understand Shaw as it's based on stats. Monfries I don't get. Might be that 7 goal game he had at Geelong or something was worth triple points?

With JKH (1) it makes ten exactly (and on the way to creating an elite team)!

We could have had Jonathan Brown. Did anyone else read that in the age today in the life & style bit. Paul McNamee was talking about his book and mentioned his time at Melbourne and said I nearly had Jonathan Brown but the club wanted to go with young ones. Interesting because he wouldn't even leave Brisbane for the pies.

IMO that's just Paul McNamee justifying Paul McNamee. Pie in the sky thinking, if you pardon the pun. Was never going to happen.

Michael Walters.....I don't think he is elite

Hes pretty good, Garlands our best player.

What's the CEO doing getting involved in football matters anyway?

Perhaps we could move Chip into the forward line where Garlo occasionally roams to bring him more into the play !

Garland is a long way from our best player, in my opinion. Clark, Viney, Hogan, Tyson, Grimes, Trengove, Frawley, Dawes, Howe, Watts are all better than Garland.

I have never liked Garland, I never feel comfortable when the ball is in his hand. I was happy to see him take the game on last year, and when he was under pressure kicked the ball long, instead of trying to pin point a target. Because he doesn't have the skills to do it. I hate the way he always looks so lethargic.

I hope he changes my opinion in 2014.

Kick th ball long Garland when you are under pressure......simple!

Champion Data is a joke

James Frawley is an elite full back no matter how you slice it

I hear what you're saying. It's very good, although very harsh on your Full Backs (FB) and Full Forwards (FF).

In the case of a FB, nothing is awarded for a spoil or shutting down a forward by either blocking or staying with them on a run.

For the forwards, there is no real selective difference between the CHF and FF, we will rarely see a FF within this "elite" category ahead of the CHF who more freely roam the ground and gain more possessions, marks and the odd tackle.

Aside from that Championship Data do an excellent job everywhere else.

Brian Lake or Josh Gibson? Would be close to elite for FB

My first reaction when I read the article was one of embarrassment that we were the only club currently without an 'elite' player. On reflection, I can't disagree. It's a remarkably disappointing result. I fail to see how, by any measure, different criteria would change the ratings. Let's hope 2014 will be different.

Champion Data are such a joke that every AFL club, the AFL, SANFL, WAFL and most media outlets pay them a lot to receive their statistics.

A joke indeed.

It's ok to take the stats from a very reputable firm like Champion. It's then up to the coaches how they interpret that data. My problem with Champion is when they try to interpret the data they are the same as you or me, it then becomes subjective.

I cannot understand what you could possibly be basing this on. He hardly ever loses against his man - tall or small. Any lethargy he showed was removed from his game in the last 2 years where his attack on the ball and man has been first rate. He very rarely turns the ball over but granted when he does it is usually a shocker that stands out. He is one of few on our list who would get a game with most if not all clubs in the competition

Sandilands, Judd, Brown - injury prone, getting too old

Priddis - agree very good player, unlucky not to be on the list

Lewis - very good player, probably unluck not to be on the list but probably a rung below

Nic Nat - severely over rated on his output to date

Haha McNamee what a bloody clown.

I think 2013 was a great year for him, where he showed aggression and confidence, but I base what I say on his performances. I have a friend who said he would never watch another Richmond game as long as Darren Gasper was playing, until last year I was having similar thoughts about Garland, I constantly watch a Garland, especially when we have a kick in...he never provides an option! We need his experience back there but he has so many holes in his game and I don't think we will win a premiership with him in our team, however we have stuck with him and I hope he gets better because he should be coming into the prime of his career.

I think if Roos gets our team performing well that Garland will be an AA defender in the next few years. He's been maligned by some on here but playing in a back line with this team has not been easy for anyone let alone a developing player. With a good coaching and development team around him I expect big things from Col.

Things looked good with a few years ago down back with Rivers Frawley Grimes and Garland, hopefully this year we will have Grimes down back again and I would love to see Vince down there at half back. Because we can not base a back line around Garland.
