Surely you don't sack a coach in November, because he goes on the radio and is interviewed? Did he say anything untoward about the club? I'd say there are other things afoot here and Harvey might be coming home.

I'm not saying that is the reasoning behind his sacking i'va. I'm questioning his judgement in regards to reading the play.

If this happened a month before he was sacked, I would raise my eyebrows a bit but realize that things can change within a month. But 4 hours before he was sacked? Either the club hasn't been shooting straight dice or Watters is a goose.

Good decision by the saints. Watters was Neeld 2.0. Power hungry, horrible communicator, indecisive and divided the playing group. He didn't want the rebuild. The saints board and head of football did want the rebuild. Therefor you find the coach who fits the plan and you do it as soon as possible.

The players can now enter the season with a clear plan to focus on and the club doesn't have the negative press of when Watters will get sacked which was bound to happen otherwise.

But they have to go for Choco Williams I think. Which is unfortunate because he's a quality coach.

To be fair BB, there hasn't been too much insanity from the club in recent years. There was of course the St. Kilda school girl stuff and Milney but I think admin. handled those dramas as well as could be expected. When they sacked Thommo, it was miles better than this. It was done ruthlessly and efficiently without a great deal of fallout.

This seems to be a return to the St. Kilda of the '80's.

I think its funny that since the story has been reported i have been chatting (not teasing yet) to my St Kilda mates and have been told by one of them that Mark Williams would be the next coach, then the other said that Voss had already accepted the job and then i looked at news.com and they are suggesting that Harvey would be coaching.

This really annoys me. Watters goes on a radio program with the clear and full agreement of club officials, and while he is there, all the strings are pulled together behind his back to form the rope to then hang the poor bugger!!! Absolute disgrace. And a reminder to Chris Pelchen - you are employed to work with the club UNDER the authority of the senior coach, not as an equal point of reference. I hate the AFL at times like this. I know it is a "fully professional environment" but so are the places most of us work at. If you are going to sack someone, have the guts to look them in the eye and tell them clearly and kindly what those reasons are.

The Saints leadership culture = horrible

The Saints coaching choices and development = horrible

Board-Coach relationships = horrible (think of Blight, Thomas, now Watters)

Interesting that another Pies coach is sacked with a horrible winning percentage. Perhaps the best thing the Pies did was to move Malthouse on.

But there is good news for us. Brisbane, Essendon and the Saints look all set for a season of [censored] and the spotlight is off the Dees.

Actually the club website has Pelchen named above Watters on a list which is indicative of where they stand. The saints appear at least in this case to have moved to a system seen in the NFL and many other sports where the football manager has authority beyond the coach.

With all the pressure on coaches these days it's not a bad idea to limit their power and authority over what they actually control and specialise in. Then the manager of football can take care of the playing list and other decisions.

If the 2 aren't getting along then you pick which one if not both are holding you back and fire them. At the moment the saints think Pelchen is doing a great job refreshing the list. He's just got 3 top 20 picks, added Shane Savage and replaced McEvoy with Longer which long term could be a masterstroke. Watters on the other hand seemed to be struggling sharing the responsibility and working with Pelchen so he's out the door.

I purposely worded it to err on the side of caution and not getting hopes up too high. Perhaps I should've gone for "just maybe there's a wee chance this could slightly improve our chances of maybe a win...possibly."

Just because we've had our hopes destroyed in Round 1 the past couple of years doesn't mean we can't reflect on the positive impact this could have on our chances this time around.

Who would want to be a coach? I found it hard enough with the juniors let alone afl. I like being able to sleep of a night time

I would be very surprised if they sacked Watters without already having a replacement lined up. We will soon see, I suppose.
