The captaincy. Who do we want?

Jones for Capt and either Grimes or Garland for VC... as someone else mentioned, reward for effort and proven leadership on a regular basis. I would think that with the ASADA cloud hanging over his head, Trengove may be out of the picture (even for the leadership group) unless some news comes out well before the start of the new season.

We embarked on a long term plan with Grimes and Trenners and I dont see any reason to change that right now. Neither have done too much wrong as Captains but ther is no doubt that the responsibility at such a young age combned with the state of the club has impacted on the boys performance at times.

I think they are both stronger and better people for the experience. I think there is a reasonable arguement to drop Trenners to VC alongside Jones to try and free him up a little but I think Grimes will be one of the best Captans this club has ever had and will lead this team to its next flag.

There is no need to change, Jones has enough on his plate leading the worst midfeld in the comp and I cant see how adding prerssure to a bloke already carryng the club on his shoulders will help.

I think you might find that we just recruited a few midfielders (with more to come) in an effort to address that deficiency. Jones will have a lot more freedom in 2014 and will be very well placed to take on the captaincy.

Yeah, same.. I think Jones has earned the captaincy.

But unlike the past 3 years when Jones was the absolute stand out candidate, there are now more options.

Garland is a massive option, he'd be fantastic... Dawes is our best leader, but perhaps hasn't quite done enough on field to justify captaincy - yes I think it should be earned.

And... James Frawley should be thrown up as an option.

All in all, I think it's down to Jones, Garland or Frawley.. Jack Grimes should be Vice Captain.

If it's a Leading Teams model then the captains and leadership group will be decided on in a similar fashion to how they were under Neeld, but in a less roundabout way.

Roosy explained it during his leadership talk that the size of the leadership group is chosen then players decide who they want in it. The coaches then select a captain/captains from the elected leadership group.

The only difference between the two of them is that under Leading Teams you vote directly for the player, whereas Neeld and co had them voting on their traits. Which seems really dumb in hindsight... giving each one of your teammates a personality test. Ugh.

Anyway, looking forward to seeing it take shape, hopefully before the season proper.

. Neita boring? Please the bloke is a 300 game legend. Was fierce in the heat of the battle on the field. I love The Ox also but unfortunately injury & a gambling addiction ensured he would never lead our club. I love his passion still today , especially when he got stuck into Scully about lying to Jimmy. Both great servants, but Neitz boring? No way!!!!!

At the time I too thought Schwartz would have been more inspirational as captain, however since then we've all seen why Schwartz was probably not even considered. He isn't that smart and he made terrible life style choices. He could not have been asked to lead others while he couldn't get his own life straight.

and depending how really in the preseason the decision is made, Cross may be in too.

If you ask Ox himself, he would admit (and has admitted) there was no way he should have been captain. The reasons for this have been pretty well documented.

Not to say the two Jacks aren't hard workers or good players but they clearly haven't notched up the achievements yet. They didn't mean to get involved in all the political fallout post 2010 and they appear to be cleanskins in all of this but their appointments were to a large extent political and a bit of a marketing gimmick to be honest. Plus they have struggled, Trenners from day dot and it seems Grimesy's kicking started to abandon him after the Carlton game. Let them go back to enjoying their footy and get rid of the curse of 2012-2013.

I think anyone suggesting that Jack Grimes' appointment as captain was undeserved (ie that it was influenced by anything other than his leadership abilities) hasn't really been paying attention.

Juniors:

-Captain of Vic Metro under 16s

-Captain of Vic Metro under 18s

-Captain of Northern Knights in the TAC Cup

-Won the "Ben Mitchell Medal for his leadership and role-model potential" while at the AFL/AIS academy

Under Bailey:

-He was elected to the leadership group in 2011 age only 3 years on the list and 26 games.

-He won the 2011 Club leadership award despite playing only 6 games for the season.

Under Neeld:

-He was made captain in 2012 after the players and coaches rated his leadership qualities

-He won the 2012 Club leadership award

Grimes was not made captain for political or marketing gimmick; he had repeatedly proven himself a man of outstanding leadership qualities as shown above.

Regarding the appointment of Trengove as Co-captain, I thought that at the time that was "insurance" in case Grimes couldn't get on the park so we'd still have a captain on field. It may have been engineered by Neeld. We'll never know. But if you think he wasn't deserving, you'd have to believe Neeld lied to the media, us supporters and to the players:

Neeld was determined to appoint a single captain when he won the Demons job last year, but said that having spent the past four months observing the ''actions and behaviours'' of Grimes and Trengove, he had found them impossible to split.

"It's a cliche, but they lead by example. I only have their actions and behaviours of the past four months to go by, and they've been terrific."

The selection process has been well documented elsewhere, but given Grimes' clear and demonstrated leadership skills and ability, if Trengove was truly on par with or close to Grimes in this, then he too must have sound leadership ability.

I'm not sure that anyone has ever really talked about Jones or Garland as leaders until the second half of this year apart from fans on forums. Jones was added to the leadership group in 2011, his 6th season on the list. Garland stepped up in 2012. To his credit, Garland has really stepped up to win the club leadership award this year.

I think both are growing as leaders and may be ready to take a more senior role in club leadership in the future. But I don't think that either should have been, or were ready to be captain, in the past 3 years.

Captaincy is about leadership. It's about culture change. It's about not only inspiring but leading and supporting others.

On field performance may be one facet of inspiring others, but it certainly isn't the only and it is necessarily the best.
