La Dee-vina Comedia 17,136 Posted September 13, 2013 Posted September 13, 2013 The Father-son story in today's paper suggested Melbourne has had poor returns from this form of drafting. The topic was briefly touched on in http://demonland.com/forums/index.php?/topic/35040-bringing-the-game-into-disrepute/ According to the story (can someone please post the link, I can't find it online) Melbourne has had 5 father-son selections who between them have played only 62 games. Whether Ron Barassi should be included in the list has been debated briefly in the above-mentioned thread. But clearly he's not one of the five. So who are they? Chris Johnson and Jack Viney presumably are two. But the others?

Matt Demon 1,597 Posted September 13, 2013 Posted September 13, 2013 It'll look better in a few years with Viney, Stretch & Lovett running around.

Wikipedia not always the most reliable source but aligns with all the ones I could remember. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_players_drafted_to_the_Australian_Football_League_under_the_father-son_rule Brad Flower played with Sandringham in an effort to see if he was up to AFL, which he wasn't.
Grapeviney 9,929 Posted September 13, 2013 Posted September 13, 2013 wasn't there a cordner too? David, son of Ted. http://demonwiki.org/David+Cordner

Thanks. Immemorable bunch, although Barassi significantly improves it.
reynolds46 1,310 Posted September 13, 2013 Posted September 13, 2013 there was a Chris Sullivan whose dad Tony played 150+ games, not sure if he was a FS pick though
DemonFrog 1,359 Posted September 13, 2013 Posted September 13, 2013 May be the MFC need to add a clause in all future contract so that every player produces 3 or more sons. Surely then a few more elite footballers could be recruited by the MFC under the father and son rule.
The Lobster Effect 899 Posted September 13, 2013 Posted September 13, 2013 We're still better at it then St kilda, can't name a good father-son of theirs?
Demon trucker 1,800 Posted September 13, 2013 Posted September 13, 2013 I think they are only talking about the age of the draft, because if they took every farther son, we would be one of the top sides if you include the whole history of mfc

Jumping Jack Clennett 1,825 Posted September 13, 2013 Posted September 13, 2013 Michael Clark, son of Dennis...one game only. I don't think the question refers to old combinations(McKenzie, Dowsing, Bob Johnson, etc, but refers to father-sons under the recent 100 game rule.
brey9186 102 Posted September 13, 2013 Posted September 13, 2013 Needed to get Jess Trengove over to the BnF to have a few drinks with Viney or Gawny...

beelzebub 23,392 Posted September 13, 2013 Posted September 13, 2013 how can you NOT include RDB after all the whole father /son came to be because of him.
bush demon 2,207 Posted September 13, 2013 Posted September 13, 2013 how can you NOT include RDB after all the whole father /son came to be because of him. Agree. Just read Red Fox, and it is explained how Ron Jnr. was recruited after Melbourne initiated changes in recruiting rules to allow him to be picked up. Any common sense understanding starts at least with the Barassi Snr, Barassi junior legend.
LegsLeoncelli 162 Posted September 13, 2013 Posted September 13, 2013 From the sound of it, what an absolutely stupid article. Critiquing clubs' ability to draft under the Father-Son rule? FMD.
demonchris 162 Posted September 13, 2013 Posted September 13, 2013 Needed to get Jess Trengove over to the BnF to have a few drinks with Viney or Gawny... Agreed.
whatwhat say what 23,836 Posted September 13, 2013 Posted September 13, 2013 Chris Johnson, son of Alan, was another player who didn't make it. Bailey chucked a wobbly at him on the training track when he announced he was off to Carlton as well, I think?
Clark_Kent 315 Posted September 13, 2013 Posted September 13, 2013 It'll look better in a few years with Viney, Stretch & Lovett running around. How old is Lovett? And is he any good? I'm excited for Billy Stretch next season seems to be really coming on.
Steamin Demon 401 Posted September 13, 2013 Posted September 13, 2013 Cameron Hunter? I'm sure played two games. I could be wrong but did his dad play for us or Carlton?
