I would take a mid or end first round pick. That should net us a good tough inside mid with a lot of them available some will slide. I speak of Freeman, Dunstan, Sheed, Durmont, Crouch. Any one of these players is what we need and with a mid first round pick we would most likely be able to get one of these guys. I don't think we need pick 1 unless we want to trade it for an established player. But I doubt any club will offer up a star even for pick 1. Therefore a pick in this range will still nett us a very good young player.

It's not about begging at all, if the AFL are serious about a PP then we will get one. I believe we will get the PP, it won't be end of first round as there's not much benefit in that. At worst it will be the pick before our first pick, pick 2 or at best we will get pick 1.

I agree with you mate, to me Priority means just that ND1 and i think most clubs would be planning around the idea that will happen now, it's not going to hurt GWS for example they already have talent to burn, but it would be a huge plus for us.

With apologies, I haven't gone through this entire thread but do not want to start a new topic. A quick question if I may, why do we get pick 1 (on the presumption we get a start of first round priority)? Doesn't GWS qualify for priority too (or have they raped and plundered drafts enough) and is there a rule that stipulates against them?

Priority Picks are now totally at the discretion of the AFL. They are not Awarded based on a set formula of wins as previous. This is why there is such speculation. It would be logical that if the AFL did award one it would be taken at one of three positions.

Either the very start of the Draft, eg 1, or immediately prior to the first pick of the Club being awarded which in our case would be Pick 2, or after the bottom 8 clubs had taken their pick which would be Pick 9.

One would assume that due to the plethora of young talent already on their list and all their stockpiled picks, the AFL would certainly not be considering PP for GWS.

Hypothetically speaking. Could the AFL give us Pick 1 if a/ The AFL secure Buddy for GWS & 2/ We are forced to trade it. Could they argue that technically they gave every club an opportunity to secure it via a trade.

It would be nice to get that pick 1. Boyd's availability will add a lot of value to it for us trade, 2 x mid first round to have a double crack at midfielders? The sweetener would be that the media wouldn't be able to pour the heat on another of our kids due to his no. 1 selection. Having said that, at another club Boyd will probably kick 80 in his first year and we'll be laughed at anyhow.

Bad teams become bad because of decisions THAT club makes. Everyone in a position to get draft assistance has put themselves in that position.

I am not about to let other clubs shame me into thinking that we shouldn't get draft assistance because we have 'brought this on ourselves.'

And I am certainly not going to allow the 'pride' of MFC supporters to let the club shoot itself in the foot by not receiving what the League has placed in its by-laws as important to the integirty of the game to even the competition.

We have had Blease and Scully as draft assistance. That was five and four years ago.

We have gone 22-63-2 with % of 75 in the years since our last 'hand-out.'

Carlton had 4 PPs (three pre-draft) over 5 years from 2003 to 2007. Hawthorn had two pre-draft PPs over 2004 and 2005.

Our competitors would like us to stay down as long as possible and not get the kind of help we require and the League needs us to have.

I would prefer them having a whinge than us struggling in front of their smug faces.

The Greater Football World did not like the way the chosen Tanking scapegoat got away with it and it is clouding whatever cogent thoughts they might have.

I hope the AFL Commission don't collapse to biased and poorly argued views from the Greater Football World and grants us what we need - even if it isn't Pick 1.

I think PP doesn't have a number attached to it. It would go - before 1st round PP, pick 1, pick 2, pick 3, etc. Technically it would be the first and third player called out, but the third would still be labelled as pick 2. Might be wrong... and after further thought, who gives a f**k.

IMO it has to be pick 1. It's pick 1 or bust really. There's no point in getting help if it isn't really going to help. The top five picks are where it's at. Yes, Selwood will say hello, but it really won't help us getting a mid first round pick.

Why not, there's still decent players to be got from picks 15-20, look at West Coast or Collingwoods drafting over the last 5 years.

FWIW on Gox the other night they were talking about us getting PP1 if we were able to land Roos - I don't understand how it could be conditional on that but this is the AFL we're talking about and logic doesn't come into it. The interesting thing though is when they raised it Eddie got his back up a bit and said something like "why would that be?" MFC has been a hopeless club in every sense of the word all year

PP1 and Paul Roos change that short and long term, so the AFL imo won't even consider the other clubs in this, besides GWS if it's not putting the only lower ranked team and their love child out too much they won't do it.
