Pederson 3 years and 300 burgers

This is where the footy departments 'elevating standards' policy looks hypocritical.

On one hand a coach comes in and tells us we aren't AFL standard and we are a long way behind other clubs BUT then fills the list with players who have proven at other clubs they aren't AFL standard.

So all that exercise did was fill the playing group with no confidence and the surround them with spuds. It says a lot about the belief in our culture at the club that Byrnes got moved right into the leadership group. What about proving your value and meeting our standards? Nope, we clearly don't have any.

Seems like Neeld was keen on this guy from the start, what did he see that others didn't?

Pederson needs some more time with Casey and needs to get fitter/leaner. give him sometime he will get better.

Sums up Neeld!

Nth Melb say he was the laziest spud going!

My son is a passionate Kanga supporter. He agrees.

Will we ever get a look at Davis? Why is he on the list if he can't get a single game in this team. I'd rather play him than Pederson

it was the ceo that recruited him

it was a coming together of like minded people

mcdonalds were hoping to sponsor the club and wanted a fresh approach to the deal

the had to see players who were traditional looking maccas customers and he was the obvious choice

unfortunately this deal fell through like many others

When Melbourne seemed obsessed with getting Pederson I genuinely hoped they knew something I didn't, he never looked like being a player and the fact that he's blown out since certainly hasn't helped...

He was even touted as a backup ruckman... He's not much taller than Rohan Bail and if they think his Naitinui like leap will get the job done, i'd suggest he strips 7 - 8 kilos to be an even chance of leaving the ground.

How about we recruit a starting ruckman rather than the current list we have of backups to the backups...

I don't really disagree with your analysis of Pedersen, but in terms of our ruckmen, I think we have the opposite to backups.

I'd suggest that Jamar, Gawn and Spencer are all what would be thought of as 'number 1 ruckmen'. That is, they're all more suited to playing in the ruck for the majority of the game, and having someone come on to provide chop out for 15-30% of the game. So I think we're actually OK for ruckmen (Spencer looked alright against St Kilda).

sellar was so impressive in his first year neeldy thought lets get pedo and gillies to top up our spud supplies

Sellar is a much better player than either of the others

Average of approximately 2 / week. Prob an underestimation. Had a good look at him close up yesterday and I am very unimpressed by his speed and more in particular his waist. The guy has put on at least 5kg of fat since arriving at the club. A disgrace only matched by everything else Neeld did. But 3 years you have got to be joking??

I know, couldn't believe when l read this morning that he's on 3 year deal....what the ??

Sellar is a much better player than either of the others

Agree, it's his attack on the ball that wins it for me. Davis is another who attacks the ball hard and it's time for him to have a run.

Pederson, Sellars and Davis are all on the list and are all at this stage are under performing at AFL level, they need time to get themselves together maybe not for this year but start to show they are going in the right direction. They need mentoring and help with their skills. All three have potential, issue is whether we will see that potentional actualised at melbourne.

The other day when he was butchering the ball my parents wer egetting annoyed. I told them we gave him a 3 year deal. Thye couldnt believe it.

The thing I mind strange is Gysberts cant get a game for north.

Can't decide what is worse.

1. There is no Pederson or Sellars

2. They have potential?

3. Potentional actualised what does that even mean?

All 3 are B grade back up defenders. If Sellar was ever going to click into gear and start marking it would've been by now. Davis has some potential but is coming from way back as a slow starter to hold down a VFL spot, I'm not convinced he's athletically quick or tall enough to play on the best AFL forwards not to mention his poor skils. Pedersen is also slow and cumbersome and lacks skills.

Davis has the advantage of youth. Sellar the advantage of size. Pedersen the advantage of a contract. Then there is Gillies who adds nothing.

I'd say at this stage Pedersen has the upper hand.

Considering Fitzpatrick has looked reasonable in the role of back up ruck/forward that Pedersen was recruited for we can now put a line through Pedo for that job and move him in to the backline depth spot.

I'd say at the end of the year we'd be looking at this:

Rucks - Jamar, Spencer, Gawn

Tall forwards - Clark ®, Dawes, Hogan, Fitzpatrick ®

Medium forwards - Howe, Watts

Tall defenders - Frawley, McDonald, Pedersen

Medium defenders - Garland, Dunn

Thanks for your services - Sellar, Gillies, Davis. Now there are plenty of small blokes to make way and a new coach might see some potential and desire to keep some depth around and keep one of the above but I can't see any reason for having as many on our list as this year.

The AFL swung very much towards 1 ruck with a Leigh Brown player around the height of 195cm. It's since swung back to having 2 rucks closer to the 200cm mark with the second ruck having the versatility to play forward. We have 2 such players in Clark and Fitzpatrick on our list. I'd say we'd look in this draft for another prospect with a late or rookie pick who has that height and athleticism combination to play dual roles. In some ways we are lucky Pedersen isn't the worlds worst defender otherwise we'd have been really stuck with him. Lets hope he is able to get a big preseason in and might offer something as a defender. He can mark and he can find the footy more so than some we've had before it's mainly his aversion to physical contact that disappoints me.

Who's that 21 my friend asks. Oh thats Cam Pedersen, he couldn't get a game for North so we gave him a 3 year deal!

I'm not surprised by Gysberts, he continues to play good VFL footy but he doesn't inspire confidence at AFL level. North have 3 quality mids in Harvey, Swallow and Wells and a bunch of kids in Ziebell, Bastinac and others who whilst they don't produce consistently the show periods of quality. They made changes going for Anthony and Greenwood against Freo which didn't make much impact so you'd think Gysberts would be next. He also has to be played in the right game if he's up against gun midfielders with speed he'll get chopped up. Find him a match up against someone who's on par athletically and his footballing nous in regards to where to run and reading the play and he'll be good. That's the thing about Gysberts in that if he ever really cracks AFL level he'll probably be a ball winning gun and rack up touches and clearances but whilst he can't beat any decent AFL footballer physically he'll be consigned to the VFL. I bet he gets trotted out just in time to play us and play really well.

Really agree with that end bit. Neeld should have backed himself to harness what was obviously a talented but physically weak young footballer into a good senior player. Instead, he probably looked at the GPS compared to Sellar and thought, 'we have to keep Sellar, look at his GPS!'.

'The club also signed Lynden Dunn for two years after he finished the season well in 2012 and, in a surprise to many, gave recruit Cameron Pedersen a three-year contract in the off-season.'

Neeld's two worst list management decisions were to re-sign Dunn and to give Pedersen three years.

Just cruising some old threads. Awesome comment here.

What a difference a year makes eh?

  • REPORT: Western Bulldogs

The next coach of the Melbourne Football Club faces the challenge of teaching his players how to win games against all comers. At times during this tumultuous season, that task has seemed daunting, made more so in light of the surprise news last week of the sacking of premiership coach Simon Goodwin. However, there were also some positive signs from yesterday’s match against the Western Bulldogs that the challenge may not be as difficult as one might think. The two sides presented a genuine football spectacle, featuring pulsating competitive play with eight lead changes throughout the afternoon, in a display befitting a finals match. The result could have gone either way and in the end, it came down to which team could produce the most desperate of acts to provide a winning result. It was the Bulldogs who had their season on the line that won out by a six point margin that fitted the game and the effort of both sides.

  • CASEY: Brisbane

The rain had been falling heavily in south east Queensland when the match began at Springfield, west of Brisbane. The teams exchanged early goals and then the Casey Demons proceeded like a house on fire in the penultimate game of the VFL season against a strong opponent in the Brisbane Lions. Sparked by strong play around the ground by seasoned players in Charlie Spargo and Jack Billings, a strong effort from Bailey Laurie and promising work from youngsters in Kynan Brown and  Koltyn Tholstrup, the Demons with multiple goal kickers firing, raced to a 27 point lead late in the opening stanza. A highlight was a wonderful goal from Laurie who brilliantly sidestepped two opponents and kicked beautifully from 45 metres out.
