Realistic Future Melbourne Coach

Personally I'm goign with Swooper. Realistic in the sense he'l; be reasonably cheap, still loves the club so would be willing to take on the challenge and has a track record for turning struggling clubs around. The money we save on appointing Swooper could then be used on hiring top assistants which one of could take over after say 3 years. If we had great assistants who were up with the modern game that could help Northey out, given he's been out of AFL awhile, although still coaching in Ballarat.

The coaches I've listed are probably the only ones potentially available IMO. Can't see a Clarkson or Worsfold leaving their clubs to come and coach us.

Would love to see what other people think is the most realistic option.

And John Northey will be 70 years old next month. I'm not convinced he's necessarily au fait with the modern game.

How anyone thinks Roos is a realistic future coach is beyond me. Don't get me wrong, I'd like him to coach (he's not my number 1 choice though), but I can't see him putting his ego on the line to take on the "hardest job in football".

For me, Eade is a realsitc target, followed by Mark Williams. Would be satisfied with either two, Eade probably has his nose in front, especially under a strong CEO and Head of Football Department (or whatever they are called). Eade coached best when his role was limited to just that, coaching, so it would be needed to be made quite clear about his role.

Yeah i'm aware of Swoopers age. I just reckon he ticks all the boxes, would be willing to do it and for a lot less coin which could then be spent on good assistants. I reckon there's a good chance that the likes of Matthews, Eade, Roos even Chocco might not want the job. Swooper on the other hand if approached I reckon would relish the challenge!

It's be a temp job before handing over to an assistant. It's to tough a job to give to a rookie coach at this point IMO.

To be honest I just don't know much when it comes to coaches. I just want an experienced AFL coach who is not past it. I think the game evolves so quickly that if one is out of the game for to long they it may pass them and also some may be to old fashioned to adapt to the new game style. Ratten, Roos, Williams? - I don't know. Just get someone that is firm but loveable (Malthouse), Someone up to date with the modern game and a coach that wants to implement an exciting brand of footy (so opposite of Neeld then)

Yeah I didn't include Knights as he seems damaged goods to me. Falls into the same category as a Dean Bailey, Tim Watson, Tony Shaw, Wayne Brittan camp.

The only reason why I included Ratten and eventually Harvey is due to the fact they were still perfomring reasonably when given the flick. They were simply victims of unfortunate circumstances for themselves.

I hate this revisionism re: Port. 'Pinched' a flag? They were minor premiers three years straight before winning a flag, and had an awesome list. Josh Francou is probably the most underrated player of the modern era.

Mark Williams will have to do something very different with the hopeless list Bean and Nark have assembled.

I think Knights falls into the camp as well. He was hung out to dry at Essendon, which in contrast to our culture, would not tolerate what they perceived as mediocrity, plus they wanted their favourite son and great white hope to return to the fold.

I think a couple of things in Knight's favour is that he would have learned from that lesson and has had further experience at Geelong, where he is valued. Given he has had senior experience and the benefit of that experience and remains working in a good football structure, I think he will come into any future calculations. Not my first choice, but should not be discounted just the same.

The coach in 2014 would have to be Eade, Williams, or Ratten.

Bassett gets huge wraps but I don't think the MFC will handle another rookie coach.

I am interested in why people believe Paul Roos to have such an ego? He subscribes to the Buddhist philosophy, where there is no place for ego. Don't confuse confidence and honesty with ego.
