Roos signs for year #3 and we'll have no problem getting good players. Not a shred of negative media about our club at the moment, everyone seems to have fallen in love with what our list is doing, and we have a clear direction whereas GWS have none.

the footy-worlds frustration seems to be evaporating Re Us. they always wanted us to pull the finger out. now with strong off-field leadership, the pieces are fitting together.

Roosy IMO will sign, but wen the time is right, we don't want our players to rest on whats been done so far. and stop the development.

The timing of any potential re-signing for Roos is crucial. Not early enough that players relax and rest on their laurels, but early enough that it helps us re-sign current players and lure genuine talent from other clubs.

I dont mind either way actually

Is Shiel out of contract this year? He looked very good last year and seemed to have stepped up again in the NAB Challenge games this year before losing his spot due to injury. He is a hard at it mid with a bit of mongrel who can find the goals, if he's available I'd be interested in discussing his value with GWS.

Contracted till 2015, but there have been rumours of homesickness (or desire to live closer to his GF…Mark Williams daughter). If we convince him to come, a deal can be done, ala Tyson. If he wants to home, it shouldn't be too hard a sell for us. GWS wouldn't have traded him with 2 years left on his deal, but with one year to go, I'd imagine a pick in the top 10 gets the deal done.

not so sure about the Hawks, their lists may be similar, but I'm not sensing that the Hawks are tired or stale.

the Cats look tired, the senior team, although their hanging on near the top to this point?

just an observation, it may turn around. or they may have to speed up the transition to youth. but the cats guns are getting caught out a lot more than normal.

Prestia is my main hope to get ahead of any others, fyfe or gaff or parker.

he is a dynamo around the packs built into a mighty mouse body. his agility & strength would fit perfectly into our mids.

I would be happy enough, if we happened to get Prestia; but lost Frawley.

Their injuries tell a different story...over 30's getting toward the end.

Prestia is a really good prospect but I don't think he suits our mix at the moment, and forget about Gaff, he's lucky to be getting a game at WC. If we're after more mids then we need height, strength and some leg speed.

Dylan Shiel for our first pick seems a little steep for mine.

Shiel and their second round pick for one of our first round picks (Chip compo maybe?).

To me something along those lines is a bit more reasonable.

I'd be more hesitant if it was our only pick in the first round, but I personally would rate him (hypothetically) in the top 3 if he were in this year's draft.

No interest in Shiel unless he desperately wants to come play for us, have seen very little worth chasing him for yet and he'd be going for pick 1-5. Would prefer to trade in Devon Smith for pick 15-30 or Bugg for 20+.

sorry, I didn't mean to infer that my quote, "fyfe or gaff or parker" were my main choices; just names i dropped from some who've been mentioned. theres probably a list around 20 possibilities available from other clubs, that could help us with our list.

My idea is to have that small mid in the shape of Prestia with the associated advantages of scurrying thru heavy traffic, & nimbleness to sidestep to the outside, or up forward. add him to Viney, Tyson, Vince, Jones, Cross, etc,,, then look for the 192cm mid as well & IMO we'll have a well balanced mid group. add a couple of speedsters into that group & it'll be pretty potent.

I agree with your thoughts on needing some more size in the mids. I think we need both the BiG 6'-4" mids, as well as the classy 5'-9" small player, but he must be built powerfully.

I think he's perfect for our mix at the moment. Speed and ball winning ability will always be perfect for our midfield. He's quicker than Tyson, but wins it as much. Geez, imagine a starting midfield with Jones, Tyson, Viney, Prestia and/or Vince. Delicious. That's a top eight midfield in twelve to eighteen months time.

Didn't think I would ever say this about a MFC football department, but ATM I am happy to leave it all to them.

Recruiting, trading, drafting, development, re signing players etc.

I'd do Fyfe for Hogan hyperthetically potential superstar for a top 5 in the comp player who is only 22

We need a bit more height in the mids in my opinion but as 'Redleg' says, I'm happy to leave it to the FD.

I think Roos' M.O. is "why pay the requisite price for superstars, when you can just take other clubs discards and create your own..?"

JPK was not even close to the current day JPK when still at Hawthorn.

There are many others in his stead.

I understand and agree machsy but having a bloke with fyfes reputation would be good for members, huge lift for the players and is young enough to develop with our current crop, so absolutely pick up project players but I reckon Fyfe would be a huge get

It might be.

I think a kid exploding onto the scene like Tyson has, would have as much impact if not more and wouldn't cost as much.

Although it might take a little longer.

But I'd rather have a star that was made in Melbourne, not elsewhere.

I don't love the idea of trading Hogan out for anyone, although Roos likes win win trades. But Hogan would have to see Fremantle have an aging list rapidly losing their punt at the premiership window, whereas Melbourne have an exciting upcoming talent pool he can find much success with.

Ross Lyon will leave that list in disarray when he gives up and moves on.

HaHaHa, waddayamean, leave it to them; its always been up to them to decide, but many have picked poorly. Us, well we are just playing. speculators on a monopoly board.

and I think the joy is in the challenge to help players create their own career, to develop the players into a 'brothers in arms' team. to help the people get the most out of themselves.

this is the big payoff, & the reason to get into coaching in the first place. its not the money, its the creating.

May as well change this thread to a "Possible trades" instead of just Dylan Shiel

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
