Matty Lloyd forward coach?

Leigh Brown is doing a very good job when you look at our forward stats. We're very effective as far as scoring shots go, and our forwards pressure is good seeing we give up very few rebound 50s.

I really hope that the team can put in the next 3 weeks, and I guess this will show if Mark is really the man for the job or not.

The whole club should have put in since Round 1, what's so special about the next 3 weeks?

FFS we have had 7 games on the G!!!

So the better option would be to not read it rather then wasting everyone's time with a pointless comment?

Most of the posts in this topic are pointless repetitive rubbish, I am allowed to point that out if I wish, must be about the fifth or sixth topic about the same thing

Exactly,

Leigh Brown is doing a great job with the forwards, he must be frustrated by our midfield as much as anyone.

True, but I think what he's saying is that with the extra pressure on Neeld it will be an indicative effort.

Neeld is finished mate, i hope Leigh Brown stays. The forward line is very efficient considering the amount of entries.

And also the lack of key players at times, it seems to be the one area we are really good

Agree there. From what I've heard Rawlings is doing a good job too. So I'd like for Royal and Neeld to go and Ling and Roos come in. (Dreaming, but sometimes you gotta dream)

Does no-one else make the logical leap with our forward, midfield, and back lines that I do - we don't have many good midfielders?

But, no, it's Royal.

Dawes, Clark, Gawn and Howe are handy forwards to work with.

McDonald, Garland, Frawley, and Terlich are very capable backs.

Nathan Jones has Matt Jones, some good kids, and the cast of Space Jam to help him.

No question next time around. We need an experienced coach. To be honest, after ND, we could have taken a punt on a rookie as the issues and the politics surrounding the club weren't half as toxic. It would be unfair for a rookie coach to walk into this environment and expect them to thrive. I wonder if we wold be looking at Chris Scott in the same way as we do today if he went to the MFC? He has been good so far as he hasn't had to focus on recruiting policy, power struggles with the CEO, currying up to the players, worrying about players who are facing criminal charges etc. It will take a bloke with a lot of experience to navigate these choppy waters. To handle all that on top of establishing your style and your beliefs as a coach at the AFL level is too much. We need someone who can focus on all the issues that face the club on day one as they don't NEED to learn on the job about the basics of coaching.

How often have Dawes, Clark, Gawn, and Howe played together?

DO you think the players you've mentioned are good BECAUSE of the coaching?

How much longer and how many more players have to go through our midfield before we recognize the coach is part of the problem?

But then you look at Freo who this isn't an issue with because the coach has such a good game plan that even we would be a good side under it,

it's not entirely Neeld's fault but he certainly isn't helping it either.

Swap Lyon and Neeld and we aren't winning games overnight.

Freo have a team of hard running, experienced and tough players. They have the team needed to p

With Pav out they don't have the big forwards but in Mayne, Ballantyne and particularly Walters they have 3 dangerous forwards.

Down back they have experienced quality players - McPharlin, Dawson, Ibbotson, Spurr, Duffield, Johnson - pretty much guys not only clearly as good as our guys but with the experience as well

Then their midfield is so superior to ours you can't compare. Fyfe and Mundy are better than Jones and Barlow is as good then even if Hill is out they have guys like the Pearce's, Mzungu and others who are super hard workers.

There is a reason Ross Lyon doesn't play many kids. It's because his game plan is hard to implement and not effectively if you don't have the fitness. At the end of the day Lyon would be getting much better results than Neeld because he makes players give 100% with him and is motivating, but I refuse to think we'd all of a sudden be anywhere near the top 8.

I agree, we might not right away, but the difference in respect and buy in would be huge, Mark Neeld just might be in over his head with us, we need the best coach possible.

We can question Royal now. He's either incompetent or has very little influence. Either way, he's not performing. Can't see him lasting. Nobody can oversee a midfield for this long without being called to account.

Actually, on paper, we do have some talent in the midfield. Not great, but some talent. Their output is totally abysmal though and that is on their heads, Neeld's head and Royal's head. Someone has to take responsibility. Passing the buck achieves nothing.

Grimes, M Jones, N Jones, Sylvia and Viney can all play. Terlich could almost be included amongst those 5. Maybe Magner as well.

To a lesser extent, Evans, Davey, Jetta, Trengove, Howe, Nicholson, McKenzie (tagging) and maybe Bail, Blease, Strauss and Toumpas (when ready) can all be contributors as well.

But they don't perform as a group. No proper teamwork when we've got the ball. Not much better when we haven't got the ball. A lot of them are lazy or just don't work anywhere near hard enough.

Again, who's taking responsibility for this situation?

What a field of absolute duds, and you think we have problems now.

Yeah, reasonable point, but a lot of what they don't do isn't necessarily related to natural ability.

Gut running, tackling, making position, shepherding, blocking, playing in front, hanging their heads, not chasing with intent, 2nd and 3rd efforts, lack of talk, manning up etc etc are a mindset.

Our midfield is under performing because they don't work hard enough and they are poorly coached. We could and should be a lot better than what we are.

Macca I do not agree with this comment above.

We have one good mid field player in N Jones, one average mid in Sylvia, One trier in M Jones and a good kid in Viney.

We then use half backs like Grimes or half forwards like Trengove to try and fill the roles.

The rest are poor they lack either the skill or physical ability to be mid field players in the AFL.

We do not have one mid field game breaker.

Until we get a game breaker and 5 good mid field players we will continue to sit in the bottom 4 sides.

I don't believe that JC ( let alone Royal or anyone else ) could get what we need out of the majority of this mob.

If you're looking at things in pure talent terms, I won't argue with you on that score OD. We're a long way short and you're spot on.

But what about the mindset things I listed (there are more that I could list)

That was the crux of my argument. Look at how hard average players work for the Swans, Cats, Pies etc. Actually, they are not average players, they work so hard, they turn themselves into very good contributors.

Our mindset is pitiful. Leaving talent aside.

I understand your argument Macca I just don't see they are capable of the required physical effort.

No amount of effort is going to make Mckenzie a good kick.

It would appear no amount of training is going to give Blease the tank necessary to be an AFL mid field player.

Sometimes people just don't have the necessary physical capability.

IMO it is the lack of talent not the mind set. Mind Set will never cure a lousy kicking ability

Oh, I'm sorry, I thought you were talking about the posters so far in this conversation. That's why I 'liked' it.

Honestly, if I was an opposition supporter having a glance at we were up to and I read this thread, I'd be ROFLMAO. Roos or Clarkson coming to the Dees despite bagging the f out of us and allegedly turning down previous $1mill offers, Ling giving up a well paid media job and taking more time out of his successful business' in Geelong, sacking two coaches in a row mid-contract. Christ, we'd be lucky to get B1 or B2 to coach us next year.

Queue the obvious smart alec reply that they'd do better than Neeld.

I'm happy to agree with you on your side of the argument . Both mindset and natural ability are related, I'll give you that, but you'd have to agree, our players are lazy (and I'm talking about our observations with regards to the last year and a third) It goes back further than that, but the current coaching staff aren't responsible for that.

Ellis for them yesterday - he did not stop gut running all day. 39 touches for an average player (right now) One of our blokes gave up on a chase. That is a mindset thing. Pure and simple, Ellis didn't give up, our bloke did. That's the difference and if you couple that with all the other things we're mentally weak at, we won't win games of footy. We were much better yesterday but we're judging yesterday's performance against our otherwise putrid efforts this year.

You and I saw Northey turn average players into much better players. There is no doubt that Norm Smith turned average players into much better players on a constant basis (from what I've read!) Good coaches get the best out of the best and the most out of the rest.

What do they say? At this level, it's above the shoulders.

They also say - you can't turn the 'proverbial' into strawberry jam.

    EASYBEATS by Meggs

A beautiful sunny Friday afternoon, with a light breeze and a strong Windy Hill crowd set the scene, inviting one team to seize the day and take the important four points on offer. For the Demons it was not a good Friday, easily beaten by an all-time largest losing margin of 65 points.   Essendon threw themselves into action today, winning most of the contests and had three early goals with Daria Bannister on fire.  In contrast the Demons were dropping marks, hesitant in close and comm

    DEFUSE THE BOMBERS by Meggs

Last Saturday’s crushing loss to Fremantle, after being three goals ahead at three quarter time, should be motivation enough to bounce back for this very winnable Round 5 clash at Windy Hill. A first-time venue for the Melbourne AFLW team, this should be a familiar suburban, windy, footy environment for the players.   Essendon were brave and competitive last week against ladder leader Adelaide at Sturt’s home ground. A familiar name, Maddison Gay, was the Bombers best player with

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.
