Round 2: Team Selection and Match Ups

Would like to see your thoughts on who should take the field Saturday night to play the Bummers...

FB: Dunn Frawley Garland

HB: Watts McDonald Terlich

C: Viney Grimes Sylvia

HF Howe Clark Toumpas

FF: Byrnes Dawes Kent

R: Jamar Jones McKenzie

INT: Blease, Spencer, M.Jones Rodan(Sub)

In:

T.McDonald (Watch him carve up Hurley)

Terlich (Should have been in the Rnd 1 squad, Blinder at Casey deserves call up)

Dawes ( Even a cardboard cutout of Dawesy is better than Sellar)

Kent (Has pace, great pre season and some mongrel)

Spencer (Tries to chase blokes and doesn't mind contact...unlike Pederson).

Out:

Gillies: (Casey until he learns to man up and not be beaten one on one)

Sellar ( Should never play for Melbourne again, 5 goals against a bunch of 18 yr old port players means Jack Sh*t )

Nicholson (Poor Disposal, liability down back)

Pederson (Average pre season, no heart)

Tapscott (Disappointing, needs to work hard at Casey before callup imo)

SUB:

David Rodan fits the "super sub" mould. Bring him on mid-late 3rd quarter and use the fresh legs to hopefully run over Essendon in the middle in the last quarter.

My team for this week:

Backs: Jetta Frawley Garland

H/B: Watts McDonald Terlich

Mid: Trengove N.Jones Viney

H/F: Howe Dawes Kent

Fwds: Byrnes Clark Blease

Ruck: Spencer Grimes Sylvia

Int: Pederson, M.Jones, D. Rodan Sub: J. Toumpas

Outs: Gillies, Jamar, McKenzie, Tapscott, Sellar, Nicholson, Dunn.

Point 1: We have got to sort out or defence it is way too top heavy how does the coaching department not see this? We should have 4 talls and 2 smalls and make Watts accountable for a player as well as running off.

Point 2: Send Jamar back to Casey and tell him to work on competitiveness. Spencer is no where near good enough but at least he competes hard.

Point 3: If Mckenzie isn't going to tag then dont bother picking him.

Point 4: I want to see how Pederson goes as third tall.

God help us.

Team for this week ... 22 players who want the BALL. No one out there except Viney and Jones wanted the ball badly. Grimes got so many cheap handballs it wasn't funny so I can't say he demanded the ball. That's why we were killed out there. No desire to work hard and no desire to run hard. I don't care who we pick as long as they realise its football and not a friggin walk on the beach with the mrs.

Watts must play 100 minutes on Hurley.

Whichever end of the ground. Full forward or full back. In the square, on the opposition's best KPP.

Don't let the bloke hide anymore. Either he becomes a man and a real AFL footballer or he should just give it away.

Agreed. The thing is: He can do it! He did a great job on Jobe Watson at the end of the Essendon vs. Melbourne game last year. Stop hiding him and make him earn his pay.

So now that you've been shot down from starting multiple threads about Schwab, you're doing it to your second favourite target?

You're a laugh mate.

How dare we talk about one of our most important and underperforming players? What is this, a footy forum or something?

What's your point RR? This makes zero sense.

Cop a tip - don't ever bag Neeld in future for his match day moves when you're coming out with dumb ass, prescriptive, non sensical instructions such as this one.

I want us to win this game - not have it being used for petty point scoring.

Yes, and the 17 other threads are not near enough for RR's complaints about Watts, we needed another one.

I have Stu on block.

This is a thread about Watts. Debate that. Talk about that. That is the topic. Not me.

Watts should play in the forward line; he mustn't be allowed to just roam around the back half without an opponent; isn't that what they tried to do with Davey and isn't that what made him a lazy unaccountable player.

He was recruited as a forward and it's about time he stood up; show us if you've got it, prove the doubters wrong.

Why Hurley? He's a spud.

Also do you blame Watts for everything thats happened? You know nothing about football mate, he had a defensive forward shut him down and he like many others except 4 had a bad day.

Why not say Gillies needs to earn his pay? Frawley? Garland? Jamar? Rodan? Nicholson? Pederson?

Cant single this bloke out anymore.

In that case, perhaps we take it one step further and have him follow Mr Goddard around for the game.

That's more like it. IMO that is a closer player to what Watts COULD become.

Plus, it would mean McKenzie could sit this game out...

I can. I did. And I will.

No hiding him anymore. He needs to grow a pair or leave.

Firstly you're delusional by calling Hurley a spud.

Secondly it has been well documented that all our back six were rubbish, there is nothing wrong with signalling out Watts as the guy had two kicks, couldn't stop his man and would not involve himself enough physically after another pre-season.

Frawley and Garland were the same. No physical presence whatsoever. They need to grow a pair.

Most depressing thing is we dont even have about 10 lock in players right now for this week.

I would not include Trengove, Frawley or Watts in the team this week. For them to be included would be based on blind faith.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
