Wanted to gather some thoughts after our first real hit out and see what people are thinking for Round 1 v Port.

FB: Garland - McDonald - Nicholson

HB: Watts - Frawley - Dunn

C: Grimes - Jones - Blease

HF: Howe - Pederson - Toumpas

FF: Davey - Dawes - Byrnes

R: Jamar - Sylvia - Viney

I: Jetta - Sellar/MacDonald - Rodan

S: Kent

E: McKenzie, Magner, Gillies

Reasons

McKenzie - Who is worth stopping against Port? His foot skills are horrendous, and is a liability because of this. Comes in to do jobs as needed.

Magner - Viney/Jones/Rodan fill his role better. Can't have another clearance hardnut in the team

Gillies - Hope he shows some more in the other NABs, at the moment is fighting with Sellar/Garland for that other tall defender role.

I'm no fan of Mckenzie but he has to do a job on Boak or Hartlett. Ports midfield is way better than ours and that's why I predict port will knock us off.

Based on the weekend, I wouldn't bother with Pederson. Sellar to take that role. I hope I'm wrong and pederson shows more in the remaining games.

Boak is a fair point. I am yet to see him tear apart a game though. I guess he would shut him completely out of the game.

Pedersons supply wasnt great, I am hoping he just needs to adjust...

Jordie has some glaring deficiencies but his stopping and tackling are in the elite category. We need him.

I was unconvinced about Pederson prior to NAB round 1, now I am sure: he is not in starting 22 form.

Kent and Evans are contenders.

Viney and Toumpas are contenders.

I reckon Watts, Garland, McDonald and Frawley are enough for the backline larger players. We need Dunn and insert Strauss as the starting 6th defender.

Jordie is in the leadership group now he will play

This is just based on what I saw on Friday night and also no idea of match ups:

FB: Nicholson Frawley McDonald

HB: Dunn Garland Watts

C: Grimes Jones Blease

HF: Howe Pederson Kent

FF: Davey Dawes Brynes

R: Jamar Sylvia Viney

Inter: from Rodan Toumpas Spencer McKenzie Sellar Magner

As the NAB progresses we will see how the dynamics change.

Do we see Jetta and Nicholson playing in the same backline?

Ideally you have two main talls, one third tall/small, two attackers and one lock down small.

Talls: Frawley + McDonald Sellar/Gillies/Pederson

Third: Garland MacDonald

Attackers: Watts + Dunn Grimes/Frawley

Lock Down: Nicholson Jetta/Tapscott/Terlich

Need more run out of defence and flankers who kick long and penetrate downfield. Malceski, Yarran, Birchal, Enright, are the play makers we need to emulate

Posted

Could not agree more. Why then did we give away Martin? Potential to get smashed at the clearances again and again

Posted

Not taking into account any match ups my team based on Friday night would be:

FB - Nicholson/ Frawley / McDonald

HB - Dunn / Garland / Watts

C - Grimes / Jones / Blease

HF - Howe / Pedersen /Toumpas

FF - Davey / Dawes / Byrnes

Ruck - Jamar / Sylvia / Viney

Int (from) - Rodan, Sellar, McKenzie, Kent, Spencer, Evans, Jetta

I am not convinced about Pedersen and Sellar could come in for him with Jake as the resting ruck.

I liked the few things Pickles Evans did and the same with Kent.

I am sure this will change as the NAB progresses.

Based on Friday night's game, and with no Mitch/Trenners, this is the team I would like to see in Rnd 1:

FB: Strauss/McDonald/Garland

HB: Dunn/Frawley/Watts

C: Grimes/Jones/Blease (Blease on members wing ;))

HF: Howe/Fitzpatrick/Toumpas

FF: Byrnes/Dawes/Tapscott

Ruck: Jamar, Viney, Sylvia

Int: Rodan, McKenzie, Jetta SUB: Kent/Pederson

I would think it would look something like this - the minute Hogan comes out of that team the forward line looks so weak on paper (I am clearly aware that Clark isn't playing either, but still)

FB: Jetta Frawley Garland

HB: Dunn McDonald Watts

C: Grimes Jones Blease

HF: Howe Pederson Sylvia

FF: Davey Dawes Brynes

R: Jamar Rodan Viney

Inter: Toumpas, McKenzie, Kent, Nicholson

I like the balance of this side more.... But I think Pedersen will get the nod before Fitzpatrick, and I would prefer to see Garland on the wing instead of Grimes...Probably drop Dunn to the pocket with Grimes on the half back line.

In the grand tradition of Pettard, Trengrove, Sellers and Maloney, it looks like poor old Cam PEDERSEN will be the name everyone spells wrong this year.

The only vowel in his surname is "E"!

Dunne is shocked that you missed him, or is that Dunn.

Backline: Frawley and McDonald lead the way as tall defenders. Dunn and Watts both can play as 3rd tall or as attacking flankers. Garland is NOT our 3rd tall defender although he can play that role, he is used to stop a small forward. Strauss and Jetta make up the 6th and 7th defenders and can play up the ground at times. I think most teams will play 7 defenders to get a rotation off the bench. Others in contention for this role are Terlich (haven't seen enough), Nicholson (Not sold on his kicking), Joel Macdonald or Grimes as a defender. Gillies is also an option if we want to go taller.

Midfield: Jamar and Jones pick themselves. As do Toumpas and Viney, both who can rest forward to not overwork them. Grimes has to play midfield until we can get more depth. Rodan has impressed me so far. I like Sylvia, Byrnes and Blease all rotating into the midfield from a forward spot. I think the last midfield spot is still up to grabs and is between Evans/ Matt Jones and Magner at this stage. Obviously if fit Trengove comes in but I doubt he'll be ready. McKenzie is vital. I know he made some simple errors but he was also tackling better than anyone in our team and a couple of nab cup games should take out the errors. He'll be super important to go onto Boak who has the ability to take the game away from us very quickly.

Forward line: No Clark means it's a toss up as to whether Fitzy comes in or if we play small with Dawes, Pedersen and Howe. I'm tempted to start small in round 1 and just get the extra runner in the team. We are light on for a dominant forward pocket and I have little faith in Davey but I like Blease and Byrnes and I think we have some mids (Sylvia, Toumpas, Rodan) who can play well as forwards.

Sub: I think we some speed and ability to find the football based on a nab cup so far I like Kent as the sub. It gives us a chance to play another kid and eases him into to AFL but at the same time I think he can be impressive. Other options would be Nicholson with his pace or another midfielder.

While it is far too early to predict a Round 1 line up i am really interested on your thoughts on McKenzie

The above is based on Friday with the assumption Blease will be fit for round 1. Pedersen and Sellar I reckon are fighting for that forward/ruck role and it will take something special in the remaining NAB cup games for Fitzpatrick to come into the equations.

Aren't there two subs now?

There were a number of Demonland Trackwatchers at Gosch's Paddock this morning to bring you their observations from Preseason Training. KEV MARTIN'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS They were going hard at each other. The sims were in two 15 minute blocks. The second block finished a few minutes early, they gathered and had another 7 minutes at it. I think they were asked to compete, as they would play against an opposition. There was plenty of niggle, between some of them. At the end o

Better late than never … and quite frankly, there’s very little to report other than that training took place at Casey Fields this morning, that Tracc was there nursing his rib injury and that some photographs are on the club’s social media including this one of Clarrie in Raging Bull stance that gives rise for confidence. The other news is that the club has a new train on player in 185cm Dandenong Stingrays midfielder Noah Hibbins-Hargreaves (love the hyphenated name which is just so fitti

Welcome back to Demonland for those like me who have been on vacation. I’m posting this with some trepidation because of a certain amount of uncertainty surrounding the return of preseason training in 2025 after a flurry of weddings including those of our coach, one of our superstar players and a former premiership champion player and bloke, not to mention the recent mysterious incident that occurred on the Mornington Peninsula.  I believe that the team reassembles this morning at Casey Fie

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to
