AFL Indigenous All Stars

Richmond players looked totally uninterested. I hope they display the same lack of commitment when we play them during the season.

In fairness to Richmond Cotchin, Deledio, Riewoldt, Rance, Maric, Grimes, Houli, their new recruit Chaplin and a few other best 22 players didn't play.

Why be fair to Richmond? Not playing their star players simply shows a lack of respect for inddigineous players! I hope that we whip them on the 22nd!

I like to be fair to everyone.

And no, it was no lack of respect. What has happened to logic on this site ?

Just read Sam Edmunds report on the game and either he knows nothing or some on here watched the game with Demon glasses on. There was not a single mention of Flash in the whole article.

One of the papers this morning make specific positve mention of both both Aaron and Alwyn in their report on the game.

I hope the game is replayed on NITV or Foxtel (how they can have a dedicated football channel and not show the first game of the season is beyond me) because the streaming coverage was appalling.

From what I could see however, the All Stars, even without about a dozen of the best indigenous players in the land, were just sensational with their skills and enthusiasm and hopefully, that effort (notwithstanding that the Tigers didn't have their best side) demonstrates how short sighted are those who denigrate the idea of recruiting our indigenous players.

Sure, there's a lot of educating to do, particularly with players from our remote communities but what was in display was to my mind pure magic and a welcome sight after five or so months without football but filled with some of the basest aspects that afflict this game and its participants.

From what I saw of the Flash, I won't say he's back in town (oh dear) but it looks like he will force his way back into serious contention for a place in the opening round. Also, Nev Jetta had a tough defensive role on Martin and stuck to his guns really well. Even though it wasn't a game you would place all that much weight on, I would have liked to have seen Dom Barry (oh dear again) but his time will come.

.

It's a practice match with some good promotion for indigenous football and nothing more. The cost to televise would not be worth it. I am surprised it was even streamed.

Didn't Dom Barry get a run at all? I thought that he was part of the squad that travelled up there?

It has been televised in the past.

Fair enough but several of these games have been shown on free to air in the past and there was a telecast done with local commentators for NITV. Given that Foxtel had been running nothing but repeats of last year's games on rotation for over five months (which would have cost them very little) they could have paid NITV for the feed (which would also have not been too costly) and done something for their subscribers.

Alternatively NITV could show it - even if in replay, it would attract more viewers to the channel than some of their other programmes.

And in fairness to the indigenous team, they had a number of their top line players withdraw (including Franklin and Goodes) and they did not have the benefit of playing and training together as a cohesive team unit. Swings and roundabouts, and in the end, I believe the deciding factor was the heat/humidity and the crowd support.

i think the other aspect is these games (advisably) are played with minimal defensive tactics. Its more about showcasing the offensive.

So the more skilled will have the upper hand of course if it were premiership points we would see a very different game style.

Of course, but one plays for premiership points and the other doesn't.

A full strength indigenous team is a far better side than a full strength Richmond team. Richmond's outs only exposed them further.

Sam Edmunds got it very wrong. At least two commentators and a team official picked Aaron as BOG early in the final term. Aaron didn't seem to do a heap in the second half, but for Edmunds to ignore his contribution is shoddy, at least!

Exactly. If you look at the Edmund article, he's basically gone with the goal-scorers as his best. Alwyn Davey is thrown in as an extra, but given the rest of the piece, it could simply be that he couldn't tell them apart. As you say, Aaron was singled out by commentators and Chris Yarran on the boundary as a good shot at BOG. While he didn't score himself, he was a dominant playmaker and set up a heap of attacks for them. While it was against some questionable opposition given the second-string midfield they played, it was a really promising game from the Flash.

Gee how bad are we going when we report on an exhibition game and the bias of a reporter?????

I don't know that there is bias so much as incompetence. Generally if you look at the match reports during the season you will see the same thing. They list the top goal-scorers and any big names who went ok. Rarely see a defender because they don't score goals and their possession counts are almost always lower. Most footy writers don't actually know enough about the game to pick out someone who has had a huge influence without hitting the scoreboard directly.

After he came off in the last quarter, Eddie Betts stated that he would pick Aaron Davey as his best when asked by (I think it was) Chris Yarran.

I think it's disgraceful that I didn't get to see this on TV. I don't give a [censored] about profit margins and feasibility etc- I am a football lover and I missed out.

Anyone else feel the same?

i'd expect a full indig team playing for points to beat a full richmond team

Indiginous players represent 10% of players (so we are told) but Richmond represent 6% of players

10% should beat 6% comfortably

They would have in incredible forward line and a very competitve mid-flied however I feel there defence would be quite week. there is not very many big indigenous KPD's available.

GAMEDAY: Rd 10 vs West Coast

It's Game Day and the Demons have returned to the site of their drought breaking Premiership to take on the West Coast Eagles in what could very well be a danger game for Narrm at Optus Stadium. A win and a percentage boost will keep the Dees in top four contention whilst a loss will cast doubt on the Dees flag credentials and bring them back to the pack fighting for a spot in the 8 as we fast approach the halfway point of the season.

    WARNING by William from Waalitj

As a long term resident of Waalitj Marawar, I am moved to warn my fellow Narrm fans that a  danger game awaits. The locals are no longer the easybeats who stumbled, fumbled and bumbled their way to the good fortune of gathering the number one draft pick and a generational player in Harley Reid last year. They are definitely better than they were then.   Young Harley has already proven his worth with some stellar performances for a first year kid playing among men. He’s taken hangers, k

OVER YET? by KC from Casey

The Friday evening rush hour clash of two of the VFL’s 2024 minnows, Carlton and the Casey Demons was excruciatingly painful to watch, even if it was for the most part a close encounter. I suppose that since the game had to produce a result (a tie would have done the game some justice), the four points that went to Casey with the win, were fully justified because they went to the best team. In that respect, my opinion is based on the fact that the Blues were a lopsided combination that had

    CENTIMETRES by Whispering Jack

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak
