They were both outstanding players in the zones we had allocated to us and we got in before the change from part zoning/part draft to full zoning when it was becoming a national competition. We also signed Sean Charles at a very young age on the same basis and he could have been the best of the lot until he broke his wrist in a pre season comp game. The wrist got infected, complications arose and he was never the same player and never lived up to his potential.

I heard that Sean Charles had a non-united scaphoid fracture(a wrist bone which is notoriously prone to non-union).

He apparently had a bone graft,which required plaster immobilisation for 8 weeks. The story goes that he got impatient, went for a swim with his plaster on, and buggered up the healing process. I guess it would have been better these days with the plastic moulds they use instead of plaster. But what a tragedy!! The guy was brilliant,fast as lightning, inspiring, and unstoppable at his best.

Early in my career I walked out but I returned to play again.

At the end of the 1991 season, he walked out on the club (quit) I vaguely recall it. I think his mum talked him around, he went back to play. He didnt play the 1st game of the 1992 season. If someone has his book,they might be able fill in the blanks.

I was counting on someone reading the book, and from there put the clues together.

I was a bit uneasy about Sunbury = country. I couldnt ask on here on what was the common believe, that would have been a giveaway.

I was thinking the same thing. 2 dymanic forwards in one hit. Who would rate the better player on their day? If the Ox didnt have bad knees,we might have seen him get it to another level, or would his addiction have got worse?

I have lost count of the number of future stars or star players since 1980 onwards that have been crippled with injury,either ended their career before it really got going.or hindered them in some way throughout. Looking through my rose coloured glasses, I would think we have been hurt the most of all the teams. '87 Lyon busted his leg last home/away game against the Doggies. Then went into the finals without him, IF only.

I can't remember whether this was Under 19's or Reserves, but I seem to recall that there were times in the late 80's or early 90's that we had all three teams playing finals on the same day, and it was on one such occasion.

First signed to the club as a 15-year-old as part of the Junior Development Squad late in 1987, Schwarz graduated through the Under 19's and reserves to debut in 1991 when he played six games. Despite walking out on football at the end of that year, and with the first signs of a gambling problem starting to affect him, Schwarz returned the next year and showed star potential early in his career with 3rd place finishes in the Best and Fairest counts of 1992 and 1994.

That would probably have been Sean Charles who played junior footy against Blistering. They used to have some great battles on the wing and Sean was virtually a one man team who would surely have won the competition b & f bar for the fact that on some weeks he played for a team up in the country somewhere because other family members lived there.

He was a fantastic athlete who, like our new recruit Dom Barry, had pace and good endurance. I ran in a local fun run and Sean was in it. He was about 14 and blitzed. Meanwhile, further back in the field was former Demon great Brian Dixon. I thought at the time a future Demon great and a past one in Dicko in the same race.

At one stage John Beveridge (Luke's father & St. Kilda recruiting guru) tried to pinch him for the Saints but I alerted the club about him and he ended up playing for us. I reckon that he would have been a real champion if not for the injury and if he had a proper mentor at time to help him get over it.
