With all this talk of delisting/trading Gys, Cook, Petterd and Moloney being allowed to leave and how it will bite us inthe bum big time, who was the last footballer we (gladly) traded/delisted that has actually bitten us hard ?

The only one I can think of is Darren Jolly. There was also a good fullback we drafted from Perth or Adelaide that played a year or two in the seconds and then went home to have a very good career but his name escapes me. We drafted Darren Jarman but he didnt want to come across to us. Of course RDB to Carlton sucked big time. I have excluded Scott Thompson and Jeff Farmer as I think we would have preferred to keep them but the go home factor was very big.

Anyone else come to mind ?

Anyway I agree, I think some players need to move, and it's the shakeup of being traded/delisted that actually gets them going at the level they need to.

For me the bite on the bum is pulling players into our team, and not having them perform.... that hurts more.

If McLean continues his form from this year who knows.... but he wasn't doing a whole lot with us anyway. I remember when everyone was ecstatic after we got pick 11 for McLean and Gys dominated in his first two games. Oh how things can change.

I was waiting for today's hairshirt for MFC supporters to wear, who cares, is there any danger of us looking forward for a change, I am sure the Cats supporters are not thinking about how Byrnes is going to tear them a new one when we play them next season...I agree with Oucher as of the end of the Trade/Drafting period, it is the players we have on our list that matter not other teams......

Geelong have enough good players to not worry about losing one, we haven't really been in that position for a long time.

But that's the thing.. many are fretting over the fact that Gysberts may get traded, but it is still yet to be determined if he is actually a good player. The only game I can remember him doing very well in was his first... showed a lot of promise, but hasn't done much since (injuries not withstanding) to instill a lot of confidence.

Yes, Nathan Basset, I was his player sponsor for that year. He was very unhappy in Melbourne and wanted to go home, there was nothing we could do to keep him.

.,....a choice.....to be a Melbourne Supporter....or stand in a corner facing the wall, chain smoking and having buckets of cold water thrown over you, whilst constantly turning to look back over the shoulder with the "Ride of the Valkyries" blaring out on a continuous loop.....we have only 'lost' Moloney and Rivers at the moment, we are only allowed a certain number of players...hopefully we will have what the Footy Dept wants......if it works great, if it doesn't I for one won't be bemoaning anybody we let go this year...

You forgot Rivers - but what's the point of the post? We can't hang on to everybody who might have some potential. I'm trusting the FD to know what they're doing. I'm sure there's a lot that goes on within the club that we don't know about and it will be this stuff that's guiding any decisions to move players on. At long last we have coaches who are establishing the foundations for long sustained success. Let's be thankful that, at last, something is being done. I don't need to beat myself up over what might have been or what might go wrong in the future. I'm just happy that we're doing something.

It might say that he's made his expectations very clear and the kid has decided it's too hard for him. How much time should the coaches spend working with players who don't want to buy in? In the end I want players who want to wear the red and blue so much they'll do anything for the privilege. If losing Jordan Gysberts is the price we have to pay, so be it.

On the other hand, what would it say about Neeld if he flogs a dead horse and perseveres with players who can't/won't cut the mustard. Argument works both ways.

All you can do is trust his judgement and judge him on the overall direction the club heads in.

Personally I think Mark Neeld has been the best thing for us. What we had just wasn't working. We needed these changes. And if we delisted players like Gysberts, and happened to do well next season (Im not saying we are going to win the flag next year) but our comments about delisting Jordan could be the thing that will bite us on the bum.

What about our player development? What about our recruiting? Think about that, instead of putting it straight onto Neeld.

Danger in the "will trading this player bite us on the bum" is to become too focused on the individual aspect of the trade and forget where that player's replacement may sit in or assist the team.

For example, if we'd traded Martin and Gys for Dawes, and Gys does well at his next club, we may still have done better from the deal due to the type of player DAwes is and the role that he plays in the team Vs the role Gys would have played...

Correct. If Dawes does well at Melbourne but Collingwood win the '013 flag, do you think Filth supporters will rue his loss? You look at the overall direction the club is heading in and back the coach to get it right.

Indeed this is not even a reasonable comparison. We're talking about a guy (Gysberts) who couldn't break in to the worst midfield in the AFL for godsake.
