Buy A High Draft Pick

What is to stop a club doing a deal with another to take a player on a long contract at big money, with the first club paying a part of it and maybe giving another player in the deal, to obtain a high pick. You would get the FA to the club of his choice on better money on a longer contract and get a high pick as compo.

This system is so open to rorts it is not funny. Fits in well with the running of the AFL.

The AFL see all the details of all clubs and would be aware of the details and would adjust accordingly.

Fair enough. So what would stop the scenario where club A pays over the odds this year for a FA and pays all of his salary and the favour is returned for club B the next year.

Also, while we are at it, just saw WJ and he asked why are Port and Essendon not being investigated for Draft Tampering over Monfries? They have clearly manipulated the Draft.

Essendon were within their rights to do that deal as Monfries was RFA. The reason they did it was because PA demanded it to keep their comp intact.

If we did that for Moloney we might not have gotten anything in compo and the Lions migh have said 'we will get him in the PSD'.

And our compo for Moloney was so good. I would hope clubs would be more hard ass next year. The Compo is not worth fighting for. Look at Clinton Young. I mean really.

.....errrrr.....because one of the clubs is Essendon?

The point I was making to Redleg was that the two clubs were clearly tampering with the draft system for the benefit of Port Adelaide who reaped this year's trade bonanza and Essendon also got a bonus pick out of it as well. Good luck to them. I'm so inured to this rubbish we're being fed by the AFL that I really don't care any more.

Happens all the time in the NBA,it's called a sign and trade.

Don't see anything wrong with it, although it's a bit different in the NBA because you can sign bigger deals with your home team than other teams can offer in some instances.

Protects teams from getting inadequate compensation from the AFL. Hawthorn could have done the same thing with Young for a better pick if they had cap space and a brain

The fact that it happens in a different sport which operates under different rules is totally irrelevant.

The practice is calculated to manipulate and undermine the rules which the AFL put into place. Yet when someone made the suggestion last year that GWS could buy back its own mini draft pick the AFL knocked it on the head immediately. It warned Melbourne and the clubs that finished below it that a deal worked out over Jack Viney might be considered draft tampering. Yet this most obvious piece of manipulation is not only disregarded but Port Adelaide gets handsomely rewarded. It smacks of the AFL giving one of its basket cases a handout for fear that they will collapse if they don't get the help.

To what AFL regulation does the AFL refer when it threatens clubs with draft tampering?

Posted

Bringing the game into disrepute. But there there are indeed guidelines.

With FA its been a total schmozzle. No clear rules. No published formula and therefore no transparency . Just a half arsed attempt. Amateur hour really. Some worked that out early and played it. Bet some wished theyd pushed the envelope even further.

that a sign and trade is draft tapering

The afl should be charged with draft tampring, i would not be surpised, if the AFL, told GWS TO GO after tom, to punish the demons, port got the best deal in the free agent markel, why, they want port to go up the ladder asap, or they will lose more money, how many times can they give port nine millon dollars over 3years, the AFL change the rules all the time, the only reason the lions won three cups in a row, is becase they had a extra 500000, in there TPP.

If you sign someone up then they are not a free agent. You need to be out of contract to be a free agent.

How was Port Adelaide draft tampering? You're just [censored] Melbourne didn't think of it as well. The AFL told everyone about the rules and Port Adelaide acted smart, just like what GWS have done with the mini draft picks. Get over it

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
