I just thought a thread of its own would be good to discuss today's revelation of a comp pick or mulitple comp picks.

I have heard varying things from various bloviators about the varying compensation that clubs will get.

My prediction: one band 5 for Moloney minus Byrnes, and one Band 3 for Rivers.

So Pick 46 and Pick 27.

However, I can definitely see how Moloney cancels out Byrnes so it may simply be Pick 27.

As a rough guide (tailored to MFC):

Band 1 (1st round): Pick 5

Band 2 (End 1st Rd): Pick23

Band 3 (2nd Rd): Pick 27

Band 4 (End 2nd Rd): Pick 42

Band 5 (3rd Rd): Pick 46

Would like to see us get two picks for our 'net' loss (Moloney>Byrnes) but we may only get one.

Still no word on Bate....

Any clubs interested will simply say to themselves - 'we can get him in the draft and he won't affect our FA comp.'

They may even be waiting for us to delist him.

Or possibly seeing the landscape after comp picks are given out.

To put it mildly FA is good for top 300 players to find new homes.

Thankfully, Delisted FA will give the bottom 100 (approx 5 delisted players per team) players some aide in their career choice.

It seems to me that the middle 350 players are in more limbo.

*Of those that qualify for FA in those brackets of course.

So what do we think it willl take to get pederson if we are waiting on comp picks?

If we get 27 and 46 will 46 be enough?

If we only get 27 is that too much for pederson and do we go to the draft with this pick?

I can't recall if Pedersen is OOC because that would be helpful to push him into the draft. Pick 46 would be fair, hell I reckon Pick 58 would be fair but we will see how we go. Martin has some value so we might be able to have a three team deal...

Definitive aren't I, call up Terry and Damian after 3; they seem to be font of nothing...

I'm pretty sure pederson is contracted. I don't want to over rate our players but is band 5 for moloney enough? I'm not educated on the way the fa compinsation works. So for arguments sake If Byrnes was band 5 and Moloney band 3 what happens?

Just to be a devil's advocate.....

Why wouldn't it be

Byrnes - Rivers = xxxxxxxxx and

Maloney = yyyyyyyy

You'd get different bands this way I'd guess

Well if the 'points' system that Andersen mentioned is similar to mine ot would be Band 5 (Byrnes) minus 1 point and Band 3 (Moloney) plus three points leaving us with two points and Band 4 compensation.

However, keep in mind that it is done on age and salary (incl. length) and that is it.

All three relevant to us got 2 year contracts.

(Will be interesting to note how much Port get for Pearce; he got a 4 year contract)

I like your thinking - it should ensure two picks.

However the AFL surely wouldn't do it that way, and the MFC might not like it as it dilutes the Rivers comp which just might land us Pick 27.

My guess for today's handouts:

13: St Kilda for Goddard

30: Port Adelaide for Pearce

44: Hawthorn for Young

48: Melbourne for Rivers

49: Port Adelaide for Chaplin

50: West Coast for Lynch

65: Adelaide for Knights

66: Hawthorn for Murphy

A lot of clubs are waiting for these picks to be finalised before any further trading can be done.

In hindsight , they should complete the free agency period and award compensation picks before the trade period begins.

We'll find out shortly, but I think we will get one pick because we lost one net player

The band will be determined by points taking all the three players into account

I also thought that would be the case but have heard that the AFL told PA that they were not going to 'bundle' comp to give them one super pick. And then they mysteriously dropped out of the Russell deal...

We will see.

Thanks. I guess if we get pick 27 we have done pretty well. I also agree with you that pick 58 should be enough to get pederson from north considering they let Mckintosh go for 35ish was it? That then gives us 4 and 27 in the draft.

i can envisage situations where you (should) get more picks than net player loss\

e.g. lose 2 x band1 players and gain one band5 player

should equal 1 x band1 + 1 band2or3or?

I think you should get two picks with one being diluted and the other untouched.

Picks 27 and 42. Pick 42 for Pederson. Keep pick 27.

Enter draft with picks: - 4, 26 (Viney), 27, 58.</p>

If it's possible to find a club to entertain a swap of picks for an upgrade with a club ie. 58 & 64 for Essendon's pick 51 for example.

I'd love for us to get our hands on pick 27 and keep it. We should get a really good player at 27 in this draft.

Agree. Maybe not really good but at least good.

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
