Latest murmurings of a crazy time

my feelings too. Rivers was a good solid servant to the club. We must recruit a replacement.

Good luck Jared.

We've already recruited 2 for the role he played for the 2nd half of last season. Dawes for now and Hogan for the future.

He's role as a defender was already covered which is why he moved forward.

Good player for us, but wouldn't be critical for our next 5 years. FA is ideal for situations like this.

Rivers 4 years older running out of time.

Rivers better defender, Garland more flexible and better chance of playing a role as we get better.

Interesting that Neeld has said that versatility is one of the things he wanted to work on at the Dees. Seems to match up with your assessment of Garland/Rivers.

Rivers was better forward than Garland. Garland plays on smaller forwards but not as well as people make out.

It was apt that Garland came second in the "Coach Killers" award for one of his many brain fades.

Anyone have any goss on whose on the Dees radar at the moment besides Pederson and Gumby.

Anyone else being looked at? Mids/small forwards?

Well we've already taken Byrnes and I remember reading that they were looking at Ray.

Surely pick 4 is earmarked for a mid.

Never heard of those awards - I'd love to see them, is it a DL thing?

Can I assume Morton won it?

I'm not sure Rivers was a better forward than Garland. Either way neither have had an extended period in that position to test themselves.

I really didn't think Rivers was much better than Garland. I thought they were both C level forwards - Garland had some good games with the Essendon game coming to mind and Rivers provided a target.

Again, Garland is far more flexible and Rivers' best position was one he was pushed out of. Garland is an awful decision maker but so was Jones. And Garland is a better leader than Rivers.

I dont think Garland is necessarily a bad decision maker I just think that on the odd occasion he makes a decision that is fifty miles past the town of "bad decision" and that decision is so bad that the taste stays in your mouth for days after like a 4 day old fried dim sim from a roadhouse bain marie.

I thinks Garlands footskills are better than Rivers and better speed(for talls and smalls) but I think Rivers third up work and zoning off skills are better than Garlands- not much between them

I think it would be great if we drafted that Chinese kid who attended the combine. Has a good build for an outside mid and would come as a freebie. Wouldn't even take up a spot on our senior list as he would go onto our international list. Also could help raise interest in the club from some Chinese living in Melbourne.

Dont you get sick of the same arguements, not everyone sees stars the way you do

I don't - the most overused word on these boards are "star" and "champion" - words that have no relevance to our list today.

With our best player (jones) coming in at 50 in the herald sun top 50 I'd have to agree we have no champs or stars at the moment.

Lots of potential though.

Guangdong Province, Chao Zhou (China) 20 184 cm 72 kg Kevin Sheehan says: “Medium defender type with brilliant leg power. His vertical jump is in the rare category. A standing jump of 86cm and a running jump of 99cm at the China Combine in July were reflective of his background in volleyball and basketball. An exciting athlete that has excelled at school in short distance track events and displays a real desire to learn the game and improve. Is the first player to be selected from the AFL China Academy program in Guangshou, Southern China.”

    UNBACKABLE by The Oracle

They’re billing the Brisbane Lions as a sleeping giant — the best team outside the top eight —and based on their form this month they’re a definite contender for September AFL action. Which is not exactly the best of news if you happen to be Melbourne, the visiting team this week up at the Gabba.  Even though they are placed ahead of their opponent on the AFL table, and they managed to stave off defeat in their last round victory over North Melbourne, this week’s visitors to the Sunshi

    WILDCARDS by KC from Casey

Casey’s season continued to drift into helplessness on Sunday when they lost another home game by a narrow margin, this time six points, in their Round 13 clash with North Melbourne’s VFL combination. The game was in stunning contrast to their last meeting at the same venue when Casey won the VFL Wildcard Match by 101 points. Back then, their standout players were Brodie Grundy and James Jordon who are starring in the AFL with ladder leaders, the Sydney Swans (it turned out to be their last

    LIFE SUPPORT by Whispering Jack

With Melbourne’s season hanging on a thread, Saturday night’s game against North Melbourne unfolded like a scene in a hospital emergency department.  The patient presented to the ward in a bad way. Doctors and nurses pumped life-saving medication into his body and, in the ensuing half hour, he responded with blood returning to his cheeks as he stirred back to life. After a slight relapse, the nurses pumped further medication into the bloodstream and the prognosis started looking good as the
