You keep the tall player who can ruck with the average skills, over the dime a dozen mid with average skills in my humble opinion.

We had a dozen other questionable players on our list. We got rid of Martin, but then Gillies was on the list. Remember him being awesome? yeah, me neither.

No doubt I am bias when it comes to Martin. At the end of the day he'll never be a world beater, and losing him isn't going to make or break us. But it wasn't the greatest decision, and I think he would thrive under Roos.

Our first ruck is on his last legs, and Martin is miles better than Spencer at the very least. We definitely could've used him. Spilt milk now though.

Im with Daisy...Yes on one hand might have been more than handy but he's not really the ideal model of our needs going fwd. Not ideal. Having said that 50% of our current list isnt ideal.

Martin is a bit of an enigma footy wise. hes not quite there at anything but often proves more capable than many on a list.

Good on Martin, no surprises though, he was our best ruckman when he left.

Martin was going thru many personal issues around the time following Bailey. We all new he has athletic talent, obviously.

this is why its the wrong thing, to keep changing coaches all the time.... because they all have different gamestyles & players style preferences.

Martin, was the wrong fit, at the wrong time, & in a club with a bad culture,,, & all but No Leadership, learning & development don't occur...

I don't think Martin needs Roos at the moment he has been fantastic for the Lions this year.

Averaging nearly twenty touches, five or so marks and five or so tackles. Also 30 odd hit outs

I'm a fan of the Rush and have faith in Gawn being something one day but Martin is hell of a lot better than both

I doubt Martin would be selected ahead of Jamar as first ruck, and he sucked as second ruck. He got lucky with Leuenberger and West going down; had they not I expect he'd have finished out the year without getting a game and been delisted.

If he'd stayed, I don't think it would have panned out the way it has for him at Brisbane. I would not call it a mistake. I was also lead to believe that he was happy to go.

Stef was a late comer to football being primarily a basket baller and not a natural footballer. He may have turned into a great player if he had the development and guidance offered at better clubs when he first started out.

I felt at the time the right decision was made, I was slightly surprised however, he's having a great year but as we know ruckman take time, I think this fact is a huge reason as to why Spencer has been signed on for another two years,

I agree with you WJ - I spoke to Stef at a couple of Debt Demolition functions and he always came across as a very articulate, clever, personable, young man.

And fwiw, my benchmark for 'smart' is not other AFL players.

Martin is a ruck who cannot play forward.

We are looking for a forward we can play in the ruck.

And we are doing this for a variety of reasons, the main ones being:

1. To keep Mitch Clark out of the ruck.

2. To have a player holding his weight when not in the ruck. Martin doesn't.

So you would be ok if we traded Martin for Pick 40 and gave that to North?

If so, what does it matter if we got a overpaid for Martin?

Our target isn't a pick - it is a player.

Martin for Pedersen I would do - so if it ends up that way then well done to all.

Two posts of mine that are largely right but the first is intensely bittersweet and the last one has been through the wringer over the last couple years but ended up right.

Note - Martin did not end up being traded for Pedersen.

I always felt that martin's only position was as first ruck and that he was actually very good at it.

I remember when Jamar got injured for a chunk of a season and Martin had to be no1 ruck for the first time for entire matches and he florished (doing exactly what he has done for 5 matches in brissy - with brisbanes ruckman all injured), but then when Jamar was fit again he was an auto in (hence Martin diminished and became inconsistent again). But at the time i felt that he was better than Jamar in the no1 position and i was suprised Jamar was an auto inclusion back in.

ANyway it's in the past and this is how i still feel.

Martin is the best ruckman in the comp at the moment. He is proving that Leigh Matthews is right and hit outs are essentially worthless. We should get him back next year.
