James Tomkins was selected by Melbourne with pick 27 in the 1988 Pre-Season Draft. Played a bit in the reserves but never played a senior game.

Ended up making a name as a rower and member of the Oarsome Foursome Olympic gold medal winning team and carried the flag at Beijing.

Best Olympic moment was when the Torch came to the G and we beat Geelong and Woewodin kicked an awesome goal getting up off his knees.

Steve Moneghetti is a Demons fan & I believe he may have pulled on the red & blue at a reserves or under19s level. I may have my wires crossed though?

He'd be handy on a wing at the moment - definitely elite gut running capabilities. Would have the perfect engine for an AFL player.

Did a lot of work with Steve, not a bad bloke, but would've been a bit soft on the field.

Based on the above, give him the Number 10!

Jeremy Howe has had some Olympic moments this year in the High Jump. 5 nominations IIRC for MOTY so far. Setting a new world record.

Remember going to a footy clinic at Punt Rd in 1987 and Tomkins was there. As was Chris Connolly.

3 days later CC did his knee at Carrara and barely played again.

Barring the last two Olympiads the club has performed well in Olympic years. Winning the flag in 1956, 1960 & 1964 as well as finishing runners up in 1988 & 2000.

Not to mention 1900, 1940 and 1948.

1940 was an Olympiad year but the games were cancelled because of the war..

It's ironic with the games about to begin that the word is that Cale Morton's love for Weightlifting may be getting in the way of his football progression.

After the Oarsome Foursome days he went and played some footy with Old Brighton in VAFA (A and B grade) and was a pretty handy mobile rucking type from memory.

I remember when the 100m sprint final - won by a doped-up Ben Johnson - took place just before the '88 GF.

They broadcast it on the scoreboard but it was slightly delayed and a Melbourne supporter near me - actually a very senior Demonland official - who was listening live on radio took advantage of it by predicting to everyone within earshot the winner and the time to 1/100th of a second.

Is that so?

You might also recall the same person commenting about the yellow colour of Johnson's eyes raising some suspicion about the nature of the substances he might have been pumping into his system.

Then again, perhaps not because the events that unfolded on the hallowed turf of the MCG were so horrendous that many of us have erased every aspect of the day from the memory banks.

my only other lasting memory of the day is that the rain caused my red and blue face paint to run which thankfully made it very difficult to see that was happening out on the field

You'd be excused if it was tears of pain and not rain that day.

I have vague memories of the 'Footy Olympics' in the early 70's ! Seem to recall Des Tuddenham winning the long distance run (2 years running?)

Sadly this 'Monumental' sporting event wasn't around for long . Think the players wore their footy gear and competed in various Track and Field events .

I'm hoping at least 1 other person can verify this tale . :)

John Landy played for our Under 19's/Thirds in 1948 apparently. At least he claimed it at a breakfast I saw him speak at yesterday morning.

1956 Olympic Year Grand Final is worth mentioning that we beat the Pies in front of 115,803 spectators, by 71 points and lost two games in the regular season.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the scorching morning heat to bring you the following observations of Wednesday's preseason training session from Gosch's Paddock. HARVEY WALLBANGER'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Absent: Salem, Windsor (word is a foot rash going around), Viney, Bowey and Kentfield Train ons: Roy George, no Culley today. MATCH SIM: Friday 7th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. Rehab: Jake Lever and Charlie Spargo running laps.  Lever was running short distances at a fast click as well as having kick to kick with a trainer. He seems unimpeded. Christian Petracca, Kade Chandler, Shane McAdam and Tom Fullarton doing non-contact kicking and handball drills on the adjacent oval.  All moving freely at pace.  I didn’

    TRAINING: Wednesday 5th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatchers were out in force as the Demons returned to Gosch's Paddock for preseason training on Wednesday morning. GHOSTWRITER'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Kozzie a no show. Tommy Sparrow was here last week in civvies and wearing sunnies. He didn’t train. Today he’s training but he’s wearing goggles so he’s likely got an eye injury. There’s a drill where Selwyn literally lies on top of Tracc, a trainer dribbles the ball towards them and Tracc has to g

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
