I've mentioned this before, but a mate is friends with Melksham, and I'm told that when "The Weap" arrived at Essendon, the players were all given strict new diets.

On the very first day his task for lunch was eat 2 entire bbq chickens.

It was the of same ilk as diets for blokes like Phelps that you see in the paper around Olympics time.

Both need to eat a lot more, but I did notice a bit more definition creeping into the upper body of Gysberts today too.

It's fair to say I'm quite interested in his current status at the club, and watched him closely today.

Jose, from what I understand he went into pre season with a wrist or hand problem so wasn't able to do any upper body stuff, then with the ankle and broken jaw he hasn't had a clear run at this year at all.

I will hold judgement on him, I think he has the football smarts but let's see what a solid pre season can do for him. Hopefully he will play the year out now.

Gysberts is an interesting case study. One thing that you never know from afar is how much a player wants it. At 190cms and being an inside mid his bio reads really well. He has the traits to be a very valuable footballer, but 3 years in and I'd beat him in an arm wrestle.

His legs are fine, but I'm surprised by his small upper body and lack of stamina. He actually could be a really good player and should bulk up to be a big inside mid. And the clever ones are worth their weight in gold.

My take on it was he was ordinary....... but very undercooked in fitness due to injury and never having a pre-season.

But I saw enough today to say keep playing him as he's football smarts and adds a different mix in the middle - doesn't seem to make stupid clangers for someone so inexperienced either. Think of Jonesy after a dozen games! They take time.

There's no getting away from the fact that a first round draft pick, who is a mid, shouldn't be so peripheral even taking into account injuries. If I gave you a list of the midfield peers from his draft that are cemented in their teams best 22 you'd be horrified.

Why does he have spaghetti arms 3 years in ? He definitely needs to step up. How badly does he want it ?

That said, let's give him at least a week to once again feel the pace of AFL level.

I liked at one stage it was a stoppage on the members side wing, the ball hit the deck, he got in there, quick hands out to Trengove, who dished off to Jones i think it was who then left foot onto Blease's [censored]!

First game for the year after a broken jaw amongst several injuries he's had this year and punters are already putting the boots in.

Give it a rest.

Let him get use to the pace of the game again and fingers crossed for him, finish off the year strongly.

Just soak up the win and try to enjoy. A third year player trying to get back into seniors mode is the least of our worries.

What attitude? I am sick to death of how MFC has gone this year just as much as the next person. Doesn't mean I don't give latitude to those that might deserve a little.

I merely meant give him some patience. When I see a bloke play his first game in a the seniors after being broken all year I don't immediately think he's going to get have 20 touches and kick 5 goals for the game, unless he's Luke Hodge. But hey, maybe I am just getting a bit soft in my old age of 31 years.

FWIW, I can't wait for this season be over its been disgustingly woeful and depressing, but doesn't mean I'm not going to enjoy a win when its there, without realising that there is alot of work to do before we get where we belong.

I think it's fair to say that should they survive contact negs, trade week, etc some of these guys are in for a very big pre season by Misso to get a tank and build up a frame.

Edit... I like the idea of eating 2 roast choose for lunch. However if I did that, I would not have quite the same frame as a footballer! Probably like half a doz beers with it too.

You [censored]. Clearly no understanding of what he has been through this year. He couldn't hit the waits for the wrist injury, he then does an ankle in a practice game and loses the fitness that was being pounded into him, he then breaks his jaw and cannot undertake a weight or running program.

So lets recap, first year being drafted- all kids on very limited pre-seasons. Second year gets a bigger pre-season and plays some reasonably good games before injury cuts him down again. Third year has an extremely interupted pre-season and first half of actual season.

The kid has a good amount of talent. Has shown a very good work ethic to come back from two serious injuries this year and fight his way into the team.

He is rusty in his first game back and you lambast him.

I cannot believe in this day and age, with all the facitites and help in the world, that blokes like Gysberts and Morton
