Brad Green 250 AFL Games

I find this amusing that some are saying that this is Green's last year and that we hope that he makes the decision and isn't forced by the Club, yet people (I'm not saying you in particular RR) continue to whinge about letting McDonald go a year early. What was Junior doing that Green isn't? I personally believe Green's potential to be able to run one more season out (ie play approx 15 games) is a lot higher than Junior's was in his "last" year.

To keep Green for one more isn't going to arm us too greatly. He is on the veteran list, is costing us bugger all (especially if we can negotiate a 1 year contract), and does provide experience that we are often complaining about that we haven't got.

Congrats on the 250th Brad. Regardless of what eventuates in 2013, this is a milestone that we all agree that you deserve.

Whatever happens with Brad won't be about the $ cost. The issue will be around list management,

• Are we going to see a deep cut in the list?
  
• Could some of our players like Dun, Bate or Moloney actually go as a free agent elsewhere?
  
• Do we land some free agents of our own?
  

All these things will come into play for Brad in determining what he wants to do next year... and the club will be thinking about it all too. Also remember that I think Jamar and Rivers are eligible for the veterans list, so we can't have 3, and we would be putting the two highest paid onto that list I guess...

I don't think anyone disagrees that he has been a fantastic servant and 250 games is a milestone to be proud of.

It not a choice between Green and Bate. Both should go.

Green's best now is borderline AFL level and he is rated for leadership. He needs to go with dignity.

A number of other seasoned players just need to go. Its no use holding onto cattle because of their age if they can not compete at AFL level.

RR, there aren't many seasoned players that are worthy of staying, that's just the shite state our list is in at the moment. I agree, there's absolutely no use holding on to cattle for the sake of it, but if we get rid of those that are in that category, we'd be worse off than GWS and GC. I for one can't see Neeld wanting to go for the next 3-5 years of having the youngest list in the league and getting smashed each week. Imagine what the GC would be like wothout Ablett, and there's one thing for sure, we aint got a player like Ablett.

The problem is, if Green is the 10th or 11th player delisted or moved on (and I can think of at least that many who deserve it), are we going to get someone better with pick 1000 in the draft?

We are going to have spuds left over in 2013 after the 'cull' anyway, and I'd rather have Green, who can at least provide a bit of leadership, than pick up another Kelvin Lawrence who is 18 and never going to give us anything anyway.

That's my point RR, we get rid of all seasoned players and we are left with a couple of blokes that can hold their own but that's it. We won't have a single match winner, and while I understand what you are saying, playing a list full of kids for the next few years and ensuring this losing culture is maintained will be diabolic for the club.

After the Junior debacle (and it can only be called that), I will bet my house that if the club wants Green to go, and he wants to stay and won't agree to reluctantly retire, we will keep him, under the understanding that he retires end2013 and will only be picked on form.

If Green wants to go, he will go, obviously.

If we retain some of the senior (5+ years) players I will guarantee we will be bottom 4 for 3-5 years. i have seen more than enough of what my target discards have given and its not good enough period

If you want to improve you have to get rid of the dead wood. And from this year we have stockpiled this stuff and alot it is 23+ and not much chop. I have the following players out the door: Green (retired hopefully), Bate, Dunn, Petterd, Joel Mac, Bail, Spencer/Martin (one of), Jetta and Sellar. This is before we make a decision on Morton, Beamer and Davey. I would only keep one of Magner or Couch and that would be as a rookie.

I dont see what NQRs like Bate, Dunn, Petterd, MacDonald and Sellar will provide the team. At best they're a group of tweeners who have shown themselves deficient at AFL level.

On a positive note this week is Brad Greens 250th game. Although the last 2 seasons have been pretty lean I think we should remember what a great player he has been for this club. Still remember him beating Carlton off his own boot in 2000.

Hes been a fine role model for the youngsters since he was drafted and has been a fine figure for this great footy club.

I for one will be there on sat and although I dont agree that it happens I hope the boys give it their all, and get up for the former skipper.

Fair enough - I guess that's where we disagree. I reckon you can only go 6-7 max, and I can think of 6 to go well before Greeny. He's one I'd save for next year's chop, which, sadly, will be just about as big again...

Its only around the edges. When we are talking about the future.....Green is finished now. And if you did give him another contract, its 12 months and there is another cull on the way.

I could easily slice 8 players from the list this year and find another 8 player to go in the following 12 months. And I had not even factored in Jurrah being cut due to legal or other issues.

The problem is that its takes Davey two weeks to accumulate 10 kicks.

And in the same period McKenzie will make 16 tackles and 20 contests and Davey will make barely one.

There is a reason why no one will trade for Davey. Bail can leave at year end.

Hopefully list management dictated that his contract was heavily front loaded in first couple of years.

I think his strengths have dissipated somewhat, struggles defensively now and I gather his foot injury will be a fair hurdle to get over. It wouldn't surprise me if he was part of the cull.

Love your tough response Stuie. Whoa Hoa. If you did read my post you would have seen I said "one of" Spencer or Martin. I have worked out who does not have the clues Stuie. Take a deep breath next time.

And for the record I dont rate Fitzy in that role and Gawn is a risk but we wont hold all four of them (FItzy, Gawn, Martin and Spencer). Fitzy is contracted next year and i think it is his saving grace. So it could be Gawn. I think Martin and Jamar are rucking for the same role and I believe Jamar is better and more versatile. Martin could be a trade.

You could lose your house. I think Green sees the writing on the wall even if supporters dont. I dont Junior is a proxy for Green. We lost Junior's leadership when he "retired". Green has already been demoted from the leadership group.

Agree. He has been a great Demon and for his sake should go out playing in the seniors not at Casey. A position as Casey captain for a year or two would assist the younger players if Brad was amenable. Congratulations on a great AFL career whenever it ends.
