Also, the surgery he had on his hips is not a big deal. I had the same operation 2 years ago and then ran a marathon 6 months later (which included 3 months of training). Plus I played a full season of footy straight afterwards.

If anyone from SA should have had a "go home factor" it is Matthew Pavlich. By staying at a perceived basket case he's shown that the "go home factor" is largely irrelevant It happens, but if you're a good club - and Freo wasn't - it's unlikely.

It's pretty rare for a good player to want to go home. I actually find it pretty insulting to most good players, as they rarely want to leave their club.

It's rubbish that he will be purely outside. I doubt he'd get a game under Neeld if he was and he won't be picked if that's the club's view. Neeld wants players that win their own ball and thrive on contested footy. Toumpas does.

You're basing your view on a highlights reel where they're going to show his running and kicking prowess.

Btw, I like it how you quote one source that labels him as best suited to an outside role at AFL level, but ignore the countless others that say he's adept at both.

You are really scratching to prove a point bringing up Nathan Basset (woof) - drafted as a rookie and played a total of zero games over 2 years - couldnt get upgraded in 97 when we finished 16th and then upgraded in his second year but injured for the second half of the year and we finished fourth - I think I would have gone home to Adelaide too.

with the amount of players from interstate, the go home factor is still pretty rare these day. I just dont see it as an issue. When you can absolutely not split two footballers you would consider it but to the uneducated ( that's me) on rankings from people who know much better than me, Toumpas is the more complete footballer.

(Also I do like the way you compared Wines to Dustin Martin but Toumpas to the biggest peaheart playing the game, Gibbs - why not compare Wines/Martin and Toumpas/Cotchin or Delidio ? Maybe you should compare Wines/Moloney

I totally don't agree. Free Agency seems to be making the Go Home factor very signficant going forward. Chris Judd, Mitch Clark, Kurt Tippett, plus a whole bunch of other players who wanted to go home. Mitch Brown, Jason Cripps, Koby Stephens, Jacobs etc etc etc. Don't know how you can say it isn't a factor. I'm nervous enough with Hogan.

Having said all that, personally, I'd still take Toumpas. I wouldn't not take him because of that risk. I might live to regret that decision though.

Mitch Clark wanted to go home so badly that he got half way to Perth and ran out of puff

Kurt Tippett wanted to go home desperately except when he realised it was Brisbane he desperately wanted to go to someone elses home called Sydney.

Brown and Stevens couldnt get a game with their respectives and that can have an effect on wanting to stay interstate.

I stand by the comments that very few interstate players actually go home but do agree that free agency will make it easier. Free agency also will see more movement of mid tier players.

If you can't back yourself to retain your best players regardless of where they're from, you've got no hope in a national competition.

I'm keener on Wines than Toumpas, but do you have specific evidence as to why Toumpas has a strong 'go home factor'... or should we just stop drafting guys from outside Victoria?

Its funny what people say about the 'go home factor'. In 2009 we drafted two future superstars at pick one and two, one of them left the club going interstate. The one who stayed was born in South Australia and his parents still live there. The one that left was born in the city of Melbourne, but that did not stop him from leaving. Pick the best player available, not the player who lives in Melbourne therefore you believe will stay.

Cousins is a terrible example. He's nothing like Cousins.

And I'm not sure there's any decent comparison with Martin. Martin isn't an inside mid, but he does have explosive power and is a very good kick. Martin ran 2.89 seconds over 20 metres at DC, which puts him around top 10% for speed. Wines speed is OK, but not elite and he's an inside mid with just an OK kick.

There definitely has been comparisons to Martin, by the bendigo coach i believe who has coached them both, i think it is that they were booth a good size, can hurt on the scoreboard and atleast at junior levels really impose themselves physically on games.

And with Martin that confidence clearly carried over to senior footy, which hopefully it does with Wines if he ends up a Dee.
