Voting for the MFC to merge would be akin to selling off my wife to a career in the porn industry.

If you voted it for it you are disgrace.

Both then and now.

Some things should always be sacred

I'm with you Hatch....keep 'em barefoot and tied to the kitchen sink

No they are not hatchman.

They was a sound case for both sides of the merge at the time.

A lot of very loyal dees fans voted to make sure their club in any fashion survived.

It is now history But pillorying people from back then achieves nothing.

look to the future and embrace all dees fans who buy a membership in 2012 and beyond.

What are we doing?

Every year we have this thread and every year we have the same argument, and every year we don't get anywhere.

You can sit and stew and rail at the dead if you want to, you can argue unverifiable truths like I was about to do, and you can have your determination to never get to that point again.

But let's let the hate go?

I have a family member who is still not forgiven by some for a role played.

That is pathetic and toxic.

Just let it go and realise that we are all Demons and the past is as useful now as it is unchangeable.

We are all Demons.

Agree rpfc

However as you suggest for some they will take it to the grave.

The USA civil war has been over for 150+ years but there is still angst betweenthe north and the south.

lets get on with winning games

please!

And for those saying to themselves "why should I move on?"

It's hard enough trying to keep this club heading in the direction of where we want to be without the continued desire to keep the club fractured from that time.

People need to know that forgiveness is given not because people deserve it (whether they do or not) but because they need it.

As I have forgiven those people that spurned someone close to me.

Forgive and move on, or we will still be shackled by a past nobody wants to remember but no-one can forget.

Hatchman, do you mean if we voted for your wife to be in the porn industry?

If so, please submit some pics for a vote. ^_^

There is at least one family I know who had a board member at that time who now dont follow Melbourne. Sad.

Now, about the lockout. I've previously explained what I believed to have taken place, but I want to go into more depth with your opinion. So, what you're saying is that there were people at the doors asking people how they were going to vote and not allowing them in whilst letting the pro-mergers through? Because this is what you're saying.

No I think you misread my post or I was unclear - I just said people who wanted to vote were locked out and unable to, I didn't make any guesses as to their intention.

i have said over and over again to myself I wouldnt reply to this thread .... but with some pathetic replies I have just read , I have to say my peace

what happened back then and yes i was there , yes i voted . Yes my family voted. did we have all the facts well maybe not , did we believe in our club yes

did members do what they thought was right yes . whether it be a yes or no vote we all thought we were doing the right things

these bash the yes voters and so on threads are no good to anyone , sorry to the thread started as I am sure you never intended this to happen

what should we do kick out all the yes voters ?? tell them never to return ? people thought they doing the right thing with the information they had , and honestly it was never a merger it was a take over . again melbourne was about to change its nickname

not like this hasnt happened before ....

really move on re the vote , bring back the members , unite one and all and follow our great Club . the melbourne football club

lets not divide supporter again . there is no need

talk about try and drive people away , now thats the real disgrace here

thanks

Oh ok, my apologies. I've heard that from others. Absolutely there were people locked out, a big line of very unhappy demon fans singing the theme song.

Spot on I reckon Mark. I was a teenager during the merger years and wasn't a member so I had no involvement, and expect that if it were happening now I'd vote "no", but I can fully appreciate why people would vote "yes" if they felt that death was the only alternative. It was a very extreme situation and it's completely understandable that it polarises people, but slamming the "yes" voters is absolutely not on IMO. I can't imagine that any of the members who voted on either side had anything but what they believed was the club's best interest at heart.

Those who were administering propanga is another story, but I have no qualification to comment on that. I'm only talking of the "rank and file" members.

I've permanently banned "no merger" and PM'ed his other alias. I'll leave it to him to out himself if he wants.

Why did you ban him? He didn't say anything more offensive than other things I have seen posted - he provided his real name as requested, and can you be sure he wasn't telling the truth about being the first one up? Choko said he remembered the question - that is a good indicator that it was asked. Unless you were there and saw the first person who spoke, how can you be sure he wasn't the one? Interested to know the criteria for being banned, I thought you had to be offensive or attack others, is that not so?

He was banned under the "no aliases" rule. Considering he is a semi-regular poster here and signed up again especially for that, I thought it was inappropriate. He's welcome to continue to post under his usual account and I have told him as much.

Build a bridge, everyone, and get over it!

Why are so many people intent on raking over what happened 16 years ago, with Ian Ridley in his grave and unable to defend himself. Sean Wight was on the Board of the Club when the merger was put forward and it's two weeks away from the anniversary of his death, too.

The future of our Club is what is important now. Not what happened 16 years ago.

We have to make sure the Club never finds itself in the position again where we were 16 years ago.

We've got the training facilities we lacked back in 1997 but what we're still lacking is members.

Its called passion H&S

We nearly went under...

End of story...

Some of us have seen a lot of years through MFC and some things linger I guess.

BUt things are good financially now....we just need winning results and improved players..

We are shambles on the field and if that continues for too many more years

we will be consigned to the same part of the history books as University, South Melbourne and Fitzroy.

End of story

On a related note, an interesting article in the age a few days back:

https://www.theage.com.au/sport/afl/fewer-picks-or-remnants-mitchell-s-rebuild-is-harder-than-clarkson-s-20220319-p5a647.html

It's early days for Mitchell and who knows, maybe he is the next golden child, master coach that will take the AFL by stom, but he's been dealt a pretty dodgy hand to start with.  Hawthorn are probably the modern equivalent of the MFC in respects to their dominance of the competition for around the last 30 - 40 years.  No doubt pleanty of Norm Smith curse assertions to be found in a Alistair Clackson sacking thread and they may well come to fruition.

For all the claims of Hawthorn's superior list and organisational management, look how badly they bungled recruiting over the past 5 or so years and how badly they handled Clarkson's exit.  Even now with access to good draft picks, there's no gaurentees they can rise back into the eight, let alone premiership contention any time in the next 5 - 15 years.  They are currently flush with funds and members, but that may not be the case after another 20 or 30 years in the AFL wilderness.  Wouldn't take long for their piggy bank to run dry with lack of on feild sucess and escalating costs into the future.  Can only hope the footy gods bring them 50 odd years of pain before tasting real sucess again.

Maybe at some point it will be Hawthorn supporters that wished they'd voted for the merger, so the could at least have a 20mm hawk ar the bottom of the red V on a MFC jumper.

I'd love to see the Hawks (and the Cats) have a prolonged spell outside of the 8 and see how they cope. Plenty of chit was heaped on us over the years (rightly so for most of it) I'd find it fascinating to see how these "big" clubs go without finals, drop/stagnation in members, drop/stagnation in sponsors and poor timeslot games.

Graham Wright was touted a genius for some time and it looks like he and Clarko left the cupboards pretty bare.

If we can arise from the depths of despair in 2013 to Premiers in 2021, anyone can do it in 9 years. We were worse in 2013 than Hawthorn today. In fact, I think our 2013 was probably the worst VFL/AFL team I've seen. And, yet, we still managed to climb out of the abyss to the summit in 9 "short" years.

Another reason for the Hawks and North to resist the entry of a Tasmanian team is the priority picks that team will receive.

Does GCS still have a few priority picks to go as well

SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to
