DEMONLAND PLAYER OF THE YEAR - Round 3

Featured Replies

6. Howe, who presented hard, marked well and provided options

5. Watts, who put his body on the line more than I've seen in a while

4. Jones, who never stopped trying. Gave away a few free kicks, but only through his desire to impact the contest

3. Trengove, who was invisible when the game was in the balance, but did some good things after the game was over

2. Jack Grimes, whose disposal is pretty poor, but was willing to tackle hard

1. Clark, who made some idiotic mistakes early, but was our most promising forward.

We are a long, LONG way back.

No one else. Weak as pizz.

Trengove and Grimes had shockers. Grimes especially.

6. Howe - a good game ...... would shine in a half decent team.

5. Jones - typical Jones ..... courageous and tireless.

4. Clark - provided a target and created some contests.

3. Watts - closer to what I reckon the coach expects.

2. Frawley - held Riewoldt, against the odds

1. ??

6 - Jones

5 - Clark

4 - Watts

3 - Howe

2 - Garland

1 - Sellar

Grimes was appalling. I've said it before, and I'll say it again - he will never become the elite player he should be if he doesn't improve his kicking beyond the mediocre rubbish it is right now.

Trengove not much better.

To be honest, I agree. The reason he's in my votes is because of his willingness to tackle and run. His disposal was shocking and cost us at least a couple of goals. But compared to everyone else, at least he was proactive and aggressive.

6. Jeremy Howe- Flew all over the ground taking mark after mark and kicked 2, made a couple of errors early but played his best game for the club, good signs.

5. Mitch Clark- Presented well and looked dangerous but made a couple of STUPID errors in front of goal

4. Jack Watts- Faded out of the game but took a few fantastic marks early and was vital when we actually had a chance

3. Jared Rivers- Did some nice defensive work

2. James Frawley- Likewise to Rivers, held Riewoldt to a goal but Riewoldt was still pretty infleuntal. Needs to improve his kicking and decision making in defence

1. James Sellar- Took a strong mark or two and did better than i thought.

Jones was alright, probably our best midfielder. Magner was disappointing, 9 possessions??? And I didn't rate Trengove at all yeah he kicked 2 goals but they were both in the last quarter when the game was over and he was very quiet before three quarter time. Him and Grimes must lift as I haven't seen much leadership from them let alone form.

I thought Rivers was pantsed by Brad Miller, of all people.

6. Howe - great presentation, effort, run and disposal....with one minor error where he should've steadied from 50 late in the 2nd to have a better chance of getting a crucial shot on goal through the middle...keep it goin Hurricane!!

5. Watts - stood up today under fire.....still 2 pre seasons away from having a potential match changing impact though IMO...just needs the frame and enough games.

4. Clarke - made a few clangers but with the limited forward options he made a decent fist of it and showed some great leadership, particularly early in the 3rd, providing a rare goal through an assist with some guts, leadership, grunt and poise. Just might be our version of Cam Mooney! A potential A grader Super Star [no Cam wasn't quite that....but Mitch can be!!] for the Demons IMO...IF we can get the ball down there often enough

3. Grimes - started a little shakey but was in everything afterwards up till his TKO

2. Jones - Solid first half through the middle and pushing up.....not sure what happened thereafter albeit he was still trying his best

1. Trengove - doesn't have the AFL tank or frame at this point but keeps showing us glimpses of what will make him a very solid player and leader in a few years...potentially our version of 'Jimmy Bartel' if we can get the best out of him. A long way to go get there to reach that level but you never know. Shows glimpses of something special to come.

6. Jones. Even in the last quarter he was the only one trying to fill in gaps and gut-running to cover team mates lack of effort.

5. Howe. Class

4. Clark

3. Watts

2. Frawley

1. Our week in week out back 6 who save us from 20 goal thrashings - deserve medals.

6 - Howe. As has been said, he was everywhere, took some great contested marks, ran hard all day and had the commentators drooling.

5 - Clark - Had a couple of brain fades and was inaccurate, but he still gave us the target we needed all day. If he'd kicked straight he could have had another 5 today. Also the assist to Sellar was my season highlight to date.

4 - Watts - Only really a first half performance, but he was really good for that half. Took some strong marks, put his body in and worked hard. Needs to do this for the whole game (like the rest of the team).

3 - Jones. Keeps trying to lift the midfield. Kicked a ripping goal from outside 50, attacked the clearances hard and never slowed down.

2 - Bate. First Demon this year to hit a leading forward with a low spearing pass. Admittedly, it was too low, but it got there and was duly marked. Needed more of the ball butchered a couple of easy marks when he backed off rather than taking them high, but caught my eye with a few plays that deserve to be noted.

1 - Tapscott. Was shocking today when he had the ball, but I give him 1 vote because of a perfect bump on Martin that left the golden boy sore, sorry and limping. Came in so low he was on hands and knees by the time he hit, slipping under Martin's attempt to draw a high tackle and nailing him.

There were a few guys who looked good in patches. Morton ruined his game with a couple of shocking efforts later on where he really looked like he just couldn't be bothered going for the ball. Grimes gave away goals with his poor kicking and decision making. Sellar could have had votes, but I marked him down for a shocking set shot. Davey showed far more effort and intensity, and for me is a real bonus to take from this game. Overall we were hurt by some shocking skill errors and an afternoon nap that happened to coincide with the third quarter.

6: Ho

5: Jones

2: Watts

1: Frawley

Who is out of contract at years end so that we can get some players that can play football?

And have some kind of basic skill level.

  • REPORT: Carlton

I am now certain that the decline in fortunes of the Melbourne Football Club from a premiership power with the potential for more success to come in the future, started when the team ran out for their Round 9 match up against Carlton last year. After knocking over the Cats in a fierce contest the week before, the Demons looked uninterested at the start of play and gave the Blues a six goal start. They recovered to almost snatch victory but lost narrowly with a score of 11.10.76 to 12.5.77. Yesterday, they revisited the scene and provided their fans with a similar display of ineptitude early in the proceedings. Their attitude at the start was poor, given that the game was so winnable. Unsurprisingly, the resulting score was almost identical to that of last year and for the fourth time in succession, the club has lost a game against Carlton despite having more scoring opportunities.

  • CASEY: Carlton

The Casey Demons smashed the Carlton Reserves off the park at Casey Fields on Sunday to retain a hold on an end of season wild card place. It was a comprehensive 108 point victory in which the home side was dominant and several of its players stood out but, in spite of the positivity of such a display, we need to place an asterisk over the outcome which saw a net 100 point advantage to the combined scores in the two contests between Demons and Blues over the weekend.

  • POSTGAME: Carlton

A near full strength Demons were outplayed all night against a Blues outfit that was under the pump and missing at least 9 or 10 of the best players. Time for some hard decisions to be made across the board.
