Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

A song/chant for Jimmy and us.

I have not posted on here before but I have on Demonology. I am a 36 year consecutive member and love th club. I have started a thread on the other site proposing that we adopt a song or chant that we sing when we might be well in front and will clearly win. This is similar to soccer in the Uk and can sometimes have an incredible effect.

I have thought for a long time that there is nothing that defines us as a supporter base. We are not an army nor do we have strength in numbers like others. We now have an opportunity to change that and do so in a way that remembers Jimmy.

I have emailed Chis Connolly about this idea because it is one thing that should come from the club. He has indicated that he is going to ensure that this discussion occurs at the appropriate level

So, keep your eyes and ears open and I will keep you informed as soon as I hear anything.

Wouldn't it be amazing if in five years from now Jack Trengove kicks a goal at the twenty minute mark of the last qrt in the grand final ensuring we cannot lose. The crowd erupts in a song that reflects the legacy Jim left, and we are able to explain to international visitors and five year olds why we are singing that song.

Is Stynes bigger than the Club, and all that came before him?

No, I am not suggesting that at all - why do you ask that question? I am not sure hat you mean. This is about establishing another tradition.

With the utmost respect to Jim, no one man will ever be, or should be bigger than the MFC. Not even the late and great Jim Stynes. Even Jim would agree with this. The club was around long before any one of its living past/present players, and it will be around (hopefully) for another 150 years at least.

And with regard to the idea of a chant, it would need to be pretty decent, or else it would just be lame. If we were able to create a chant/song that was as unique and spine-tingling as Liverpool's 'you'll never walk alone' then i'm all for it (yes i know that Celtic also uses this song as well).

So what is a chant or song that we use to Honour Jim?

I like the idea as it would unite the club & supporter base

But it would have to be very clever, sincere, and something that only we Melbourne people understand...

After tomorrow it could be a minute of clapping, used at very special moments.

Let's wait & see how tomorrow pans out.

I'm really glad that the club has gone down this road instead of a minutes silence. The rest of the games (as far as I know) have been doing a minute silence and I think this does put us in a different category when I comes to Jimmy. I've seen it done at EPL matches and it just seems right.

In Jimmy's case it seems even more appropriate because his life and his achievements should be celebrated.

In terms of a song, I would think an Irish song of some kind would be the way to go. Danny Boy comes to mind (with changed lyrics), but I reckon I'd tear up every time I heard it!

I like this Idea of a song/ chant... 'you'll never walk alone' ,,, or Danny/Jimmy Boy, would also do the trick.

I do think it would unite the supporters.

And 'Jimma' would not want to be thought of as being above anyone, or a club....

it would be against what he stood for IMO. all are equal... life is a life.

I tell ya what, the idea of Melbourne fans being arm in arm before every game singing an altered version of Danny Boy gives me goosebumps.

To be frank, I don't like the sentiment behind the OP. I'm not a big fan of manufacturing these sorts of things. They either evolve naturally or they don't. We've seen the rousing success of the bugler, the raising of the flag etc.

I'm not exactly sure what this statement even means: "I have thought for a long time that there is nothing that defines us as a supporter base. We are not an army nor do we have strength in numbers like others."

Is the "army and "strength in numbers" a reference to Collingwood? I don't see how the number of members defines that member base, and the whole "army" concept is wanky promotional gimmick, hardly a means by which they are defined.

The MFC is defined by its history, and the supporters by their appreciation and pride in that history. We are defined by surviving the tough times of the last decade and emerging out the other side with the dawn of an exciting future ahead of us. We are fighters. Other clubs love kicking us whilst we're down, which we have been for a long time, but we're still here and always will be. We're like the Tigers in that respect, only less feral. ;)

We commemorate Jimmy with performances on the field and supporting the boys in that pursuit. We don't need a cheesy anthem in order to do that.

They should be playing for themselves.

agreed

modelling your game on someone is the highest form of flattery. trying to play for someone has a limited lifespan

I would love for us to sign our presence at games but this singing a song thing just doesn't work in AFL in my opinion. Even more so down tempo songs like the two suggested. Don't get me wrong, it's a worthy topic and great discussion but I don't see a song working. AFL doesn't have the down periods/lulls like Soccer.

Its a nice thought..

Tho its not really an 'aussie' thing chanting / singing at games, like as you say, in the UK. (except for the odd, short sharp, 'aussie aussie aussie - oi oi oi' at the cricket)

I think thats because soccer is boring a lot of the time and i feel all that chanting is more of a way to stay amused..

AFL is fast paced and the landscape changes very quickly, which is not like a lot of other sports. Youre too busy watching the play to chant..

I think we'll remember Jim anyway, every time we win, for a very long time.. esp after a premiership, which he clearly set us on the path to..

Sh!t, Ill have a hard enough time keeping it together win or lose tomorrow with Jim still being very fresh in the mind.

Tell you what, if we get 10 goals up half way through the 4th quarter on grand final day, just look for me at the top of light tower 2 singing like pavarotti.. and join in.

-Welcome, by the way Mio

When I went regularly to the games we did develop an anti chant.

It was simply GO DEES in between the collingwod/clap/clap/clap (insert any team as theyre all the same)

We could modify the pace of the call to really get up the nose of the opposition supporters.

We also found the chant self beneficial as you could say it as the ball travelled down the ground at each pass of the ball or at each action. The pace and modulation could be easily varied to suit the pace of the game and the final exhalation when a goal was scored often led to an almost mindless repetition until exhaustion and sometimes hyperventalation demanded pause.

Simple but effective

What about to the tune of Queen's We are The Champions......."We are the Demons my friends, and we'll keep on fighting to the end, we are the Demons, we are the Demons, playing like Jimmy cause we are the Demons....... in....red & blue

or ."We are the Demons my friends, and we'll keep on fighting to the end, we are the Demons, we are the Demons, we'll never waiver cause we are the Demons.......like...Jimmy Stynes

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n

He is is starting to get into some sprints. I cannot see Andy Moniz-Wakefield out there. Jack Viney and Kade Chandler have broken away from the
