    Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

    Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

    We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

    However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

    The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

    WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

GC have a mid range pick which was traded to them from Geelong. I believe (along the lines bing181 stated) that our mid ranger would be before theirs (assuming Geelong finish higher than us in 2012 which is virtually a lock in).

Dr. Who raises a reasonable point also about how far down the draft we want to go. We can always try offloading a player with a pick to get a pick upgrade or to bring a decent player in but that will be easier said than done.

By everything that's being reported, we'd want to go a long way, or at least have heavy early picks. I'm going for a double activation, with a potential to trade (wouldn't mind trading one of the compos for the GWS #1 17 year old)

Plus is there a very, very high possibility that Gold Coast, Port and Brisbane might qualify for 1st round priority picks for not winning more than 4 games?

I don't think we always need to get rid of players to have a pick in the Draft. I'm sure it's possible to put some players on the Rookie List. For instance if there were a couple of young players that it was felt were still a year off playing senior football.

Also, as the year progresses we'll probably find out if there are any brilliant 17 year olds we might be interested in in the Mini Draft. We'll have a stronger hand hopefully than last year as no team in a strong draft is likely, as Gold Coast did last year (pick 4?), to give up an early Compensatory pick to GWS in order to enter the mini draft. I'd give up both compensatory picks if there was a champion out there, and in that way get valuable recompense for the player we lost to GWS.

On this...would we lose out on an activation of the first round pick alone?

Because, well:

- trade 2x picks to GWS for #1 compo pick

- still get JV with 2nd rnd pick

- get #1 pick (effectively) for 2013 draft as well as JV in exchange.

There's our #1 pick back.

Good question - right now I reckon GC and Brisbane will win 5 games or more, I'm not confident about Port though - they only get GWS, GC and Brisbane once and GWS and GC are away games.

Will be interesting to see if there's any tanking.

No, he'll cost us our first pick won't he? So what if our first pick isn't til the mid-30s?

you are not paying attention Striker - that scenario is impossible

the determination (bidding) for F/S occurs BEFORE any Trading is allowed therefore our first pick will be in the first round

I don't think they'll activate the picks because:

  • They are worth more to GCS and GWS in the future because they will want a mix of players over a number of years;
  • MFC will be thinking that a GCS or GWS player will want to return to Victoria and these picks are likely going to be the deal clincher;
  • MFC would not want to be forced into using the the mid level pick (if things go well ) on Viney (or Stretch next year) so they will be planning on trading them if they can;

And yet, Ickey, I don't see why GWS wouldn't want to get a pick around 12 - 14 in a very strong draft for nothing - they won't be able to save it for another year. It's last year or this year for the mini draft.

Also - Viney must be taken with one of our picks - not with one of our Compensatory picks.

And Stretch - who I am very interested in, will be available two years after Viney.( A year after we get that champion in the mini draft I hope) - and if he turns out well that will be three great years of recruiting for the club especially if we can get something special with the money saved over front-end loaded salaries in the

free agency.

This draft is rated the best since 2001 by those that follow it closely. For me it's a no brainer. We need to activate both. We're not in a position to stockpile quality picks. We need real talent and we need to develop it as quickly as we can.

Absolutely.

If we do in fact get any better this year and the years following, these picks will only decrease in value, relative to draft order/finishing position.

If the mature age players drafted this year can give the grunt we badly need, both picks should be used on gun youngsters. Failing that, trade one pick off in search of a quality mature age player.

As Free trade is coming in.

Wouldn't it be logical to on trade to other clubs as a lure to release one of their good players if they have salary cap problems

You just never know, we may pick up a Pendlebury, Goddard or even a Voldermort.

You don't need picks to target free agents and that market is open to every club. The picks are good for attack on players too young for free agency - if we can convince them to join us then we have the ammo to deliver a trade. See Essendon last year with Josh Caddy - they couldn't get the job done with pick 19 in a weakened draft but our compo picks could do it. We will be competing with GWS (uncontracted player rules) and the other clubs who have mid 1st round compo picks in this market - Dogs and Geelong. We need to be pushing the "go home" factor - Gaff for example.

There's really 3 ways we can use them:

1. in the draft

2. trade into the GWS mini-draft (altho we refused to pay market value last year for Crouch and offer both)

3. trade for a pre-FA uncontracted player

I like plan 3 if we can identify the right player, I'd prefer that to more 17 or 18 yos.

A player like Gaff would be great as his RFA window (at Melbourne) wouldn't open until after he turns 28 not to mention being a decent player with a few years under his belt so he'd fit our list just nicely.

I'm not sure the club would want to part with both compo picks though but its great to have the options I guess.

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

    In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

    THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

    Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
