Sorting a stack of old "DEMON" magazines into date order the other day, i came across the August 1997 edition whose coverboy was a shirtless Todd Viney holding the newly born Max, younger brother of Jack. He must turn 15 this year so it may not be premature to inquire whether the kid shows any ability ?

Speaking of the Viney family what's going on in this photo? How is Roland connected? It's been baffling me for years.

He's not - I read it mentioned in an article when Viney became coach last year.

Something to do with the Footy Show a long time ago when Roland was on it frequently.

A segment about players and their families.

Viney found the photo a bit embarrassing, from memory.

Oh well. Don't worry too much, there all wearing smiles. So there can't be much wrong I guess

Max is a great kid. He goes in hard and has good skills.

He is vertically challenged at this stage, and a bit slow of foot. As he grows this may change.

He certainly doesn't mind mixing it with kids twice his height.

Doubt he will be AFL standard, but he has plenty of time to prove me wrong.

Cheers

Well we had Todd who was obviously a gun and Jay who was just a player. Maybe the next generation has Jack as the gun and Max as just a player.

I think we should give the kid a go. He may not have any aspirations at all to play elite football but he's being put under the microscope because he comes from a talented football family. Look what it did to Nathan Ablett?

Look what it did to Gary Ablett Jnr

I would guess that the photo with Roland Roccospelling is related to the 'AFL cookbook', a publication that came out mid 90s to raise funds for the Trevor Barker foundation. Roland was the coordinator and interviewed all the contributors, and obviously there where photos taken. You're regular 'in the kitchen' dea like this.

Please hold the line...

Yea, Todd and family are in it - Spanish Chicken with saffron and olives. Blerk, I hate olives.

Had a flick through when I picked it up - Stephen Tingay's chicken cacciatore recipe got a fair bit of use, judging by the splashes.

Not a bad cookbook, actually, and some of the photos are interesting in a kind of 'I remember when' way.

It's wrong to suggest that being put in the spotlight "did" anything to Nathan Ablett.

He never had the desire or competitiveness, spotlight or no spotlight.

Yes, I can well imagine that being the younger brother of a champion player and being in the spotlight might have that effect on some.

But why create expectations about the kid when he's 15 and not showing the same signs as his elder brother? For all we know, he might want to become a plumber or an ice hockey player?

Expectations can have a positive effect on some, negative on others and completely no effect on the rest. There's really no basis to your argument.

And does having your name mentioned on an obscure supporter forum constitute a 'spotlight'? I doubt it.

Forget the early assessment of Max Viney.

Let's start to get Billy Stretch on board.

Adelaide Oval upgrade gets big green light, paving way for footy in city

BILLY Stretch could be one of the first to play AFL at a revamped Adelaide Oval in 2014.

The promising 15-year-old plays in the SANFL with Glenelg's under-16s and is the son of Melbourne wingman Steven.

"It would mean a lot to play at Adelaide Oval," Stretch said.

"It looks to be a fantastic oval, right in the heart of the city; but it will take a lot of hard work and commitment to get to that stage."

Stretch - already being coveted by the Demons, under the father-son rule - yesterday joined close mate Sam McGill, 16, for a test run on the hallowed turf.

This extract was slightly altered. The article is an old one when he was 14. He is now 15 and from all accounts he is as good if not better than Jack Viney at the same age.

Can we let young Billy go through puberty first?

That looks an older photo than the one I've seen.

Billy is a lot closer than Max by a long way.

Best explanation I've ever seen. Compounding the mystery when that photo was originally on the AFL Photos website he was listed as "Roland Viney" but they've changed it now.

Roland does get around but not really within football circles

I think the only connection he ever had was when he grew up in Kalgoolie he went to school with Alec (Kookaburra) Epis who played for Essendon

Both could talk the legs off a chair

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

Lever was also on restricted duties and appeared to be in runners.  The main group was doing end-to-end transition work in a simulated match situation. Ball mov

WAYNE WUSSELL'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Rehab: Lever, Spargo, McAdam, Lindsay, Brown Sinnema is excellent by foot and has a decent vertical leap. Windsor is training with the Defenders. Windsor's run won't be lost playing off half back. In 19 games in 2024 he kicked 8 goals as a winger. I see him getting shots at g

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
