2011 Player Review - # 50 Michael Evans ®

A strong running midfielder, Michael Evans came off the rookie list to play four games with the Demons.

His debut against St. Kilda was extremely impressive but his season was hampered by a hip injury which eventually required surgery.

Looks to be another real find on the rookie list. 27 possessions on debut against the Saints was a huge effort and he did well to hold his spot for another 3 rounds.

Hopefully he can get his hip right and get another pre-season under his belt.

I think you'll find that will come in time.

Not guaranteed unfortunately. With a lot of hard work? Possibly. But you are always behind the eight ball compared to those in the side for whom neat disposal comes naturally AND who work hard.

He showed some ability, but I think he has a lot of work to do if he wants to get elevated.

He has a lot of decent looking mids who he is competing with for spots.

Great nickname though.

That's gotta count for something.

Some of his disposal was pretty bad i'll admit but I reckon part of that was nerves, he kicked a few out on the full when under no real pressure and i think he was just trying too hard.

Give him a few more games and I think we should judge then especially under a new regime.

Remember also that he was out the previous year with a pretty bad knee injury.

There's a suggestion that Michael would have been taken much earlier in the 2010 draft if he hadn't suffered a serious knee injury in his u18 year, and I've heard that the Dees believe he has a strong future. In his handfull of senior games I really liked his hardness and work ethic, but as others have said, his disposal frequently let him down. He will need to address this if he is going to make it, but I'm certainly not writing him off after 4 games. He has time on his side for now, and hopefully he can remain injury free and make a real fist of it.

He got like a zillion possessions in his first game, but couldn't capitalise on them because his disposal was off a little. Everyone jizzed themselves (pun intended) when Jordie Gysberts did the same in his debut game, but I haven't seen anywhere near the same enthusiasme for Evans. I think he'll be quite a good player for us.

Not many similarities between the Evans and Gysberts first matches besides possession count.

just another point of view...people see we got gysberts for brock mclean...gysberts has been at the club for two years and has two rising star nominations to show for it. Brock is struggling to break into the blues side.

great move by the club to give evans another contract. after getting 28 touches in your first afl game...it's a no brainer!

It's a pretty big similarity. A first gamer capable of finding the football that easily has potential, something that Jordie Gysberts also has.

Needs to use the footy better before I'm convinced.

Agree with you there Rogue. Sure he gets a fair bit of it, but jeez he butchers the ball more times than not. No point getting it if you can't give it off properly. He has a long way to go before i would consider putting him onto the senior list.

Interestingly Michael considers his kicking to be one of his main skills, this would indicate that there is room for improvement once he picks up the pace of the game and loses his jitters.

What are your strengths as a footballer?

My kicking skills are good on both sides, I read the play well and consider my work around clearances to be one of my strengths.

Also.

Which AFL team do you support and how did you come to barrack for them?

Melbourne - I enjoy watching their midfield and the recent improvements and developments that they’ve made as a team.

Michael has hung up the #50 guernsey. He'll now be wearing #32.

Really? I thought #50 was gold :(

If I recall there were some good reports about him when he came back after injury, they mentioned he was a very skilled player. Do you have any recollection of that?

    TRAINING: Wednesday 19th February 2025

It consisted of a match simulation for one half  and then a free choice activity time. I think Kolt looks like he’s im

HARVEY WALLBANGER'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Absent: Salem, Windsor (word is a foot rash going around), Viney, Bowey and Kentfield Train ons: Roy George, no Culley today. MATCH SIM: Friday 7th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. Rehab: Jake Lever and Charlie Spargo running laps.  Lever was running short distances at a fast click as well as having kick to kick with a trainer. He seems unimpeded. Christian Petracca, Kade Chandler, Shane McAdam and Tom Fullarton doing non-contact kicking and handball drills on the adjacent oval.  All moving freely at pace.  I didn’

Demonland Trackwatchers were out in force as the Demons returned to Gosch's Paddock for preseason training on Wednesday morning. GHOSTWRITER'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Kozzie a no show. Tommy Sparrow was here last week in civvies and wearing sunnies. He didn’t train. Today he’s training but he’s wearing goggles so he’s likely got an eye injury. There’s a drill where Selwyn literally lies on top of Tracc, a trainer dribbles the ball towards them and Tracc has to g

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
