It's not about punishment for this incident it's about letting him know we're fed up with his constant erratic behavior. It's about letting him know if he doesn't conform he can watch his mates play from the stands.

It's about sending a message. That message, plain and simply is; grow up!

The only thing I like about Colin is that he plays for the MFC.

Well a big heavy fine and a number of extra training sessions might have satisfied most ( esp those who didn't want Colin to miss a game ) but $5,000 is the maximum fine under the "Collective Bargaining Agreement" ( fairly sure that's right )

The hip pocket is often where a professional sportsman feels it the most but the Clubs can be hamstrung by the rules it seems .

I understand that they are supposed to: 1. hold the player accountable to his teammates as the penalty hurts them as well; and 2. costs them a chance to do what they love most and play the game; but as a few others have noted the bigger losers here are the team and the supporters. I think this is more of a message to the rest of the team than any lesson for Sylvia. Colin's not likely to change any time soon. Only Green, Rivers and Jamar have been at the club longer - he's not a child any more and if he makes a dramatic life change it's going to take a lot more than natural maturation.

I understand this line of thinking, but I also recall Collingwood holding Shaw and Didak to account in 2008. Within a couple of years they were holding a premiership cup. If ever a club needed to change its culture it's the MFC. I'm happy for Neeld to make early inroads.

It's simple really. Col's best finish in the Bluey has I think been 5th. He has played 8 seasons and was pick 3 in the draft. Has all the talent and mongrel but is an airhead and is our most disappointing player. His second and third efforts are non-existent.

Neeld needs to put a rocket where the sun don't shine in Sylvia. 1 year or he's out. It's a team game and he doesn't play a team game. The Pies don't have the best talent but they play a great team game. That's where we need to be and Sylvia does not fit on those plans.

Just like TJ. Wasted Talent. Two top 10 finishes in the Bluey in 10 years (a 1st and 3rd).

We have to fix the culture. And now. We cannot get talented young players to turn into elite players unless we fix the culture... Culture culture culture.. Aaaarrgghhh.

....... This is why footy players keep getting in trouble because clubs dont come down on them hard enough.

I thought it was because they were young men, highly paid, working part time (yes I know they train) .... same demographic that get's slugged a fortune on car insurance.

So, the team knows they're understrength, because of one bloke's discipline. They let that bloke know all about it. That bloke is in the dog house.

Every player then doesn't want to be the next one to stuff up.

It's called peer pressure.

So, that's the only way to change culture? really imaginative.

Of course it isn't. But if you were trying to change a culture of failure and less-than-optimal professionalism and one of your players did this, and it was the first playing group decision to make - what would you do?

You could try and move past it, or gloss over it, but that is a worse message to send as your first message.

I don't think such a belated punishment is actually very effective at all. Imagine he had stuffed up in round 1 instead. Would it make sense to suspend him for the round 16 game? It's the same sort of thing. Punishment only works if it can be immediately associated with the wrongdoing. Not to mention the fact that all the pre-season work he has to do until round 1 has just a little less meaning. You work and you work and you work up until round one, but you can't play because of something you did four months ago? Doesn't seem very motivating to me.

For Sylvia it should have been much harsher and yes the team will suffer - but rebuilding of the club culture is more important than one very good playing missing a few games.

This is where i sit..i would prefer a severe punishment now, that he can work through during the pre season. If this is done he can them press for selection in round 1.

But i am not the new coach, so i just hope the right decision has been made.

It's BECAUSE it's 4 months away that it's going to hurt that much more. He has to carry it for the whole pre-season - and during that period, isn't going to forget it for a single day.

Penalty matches the crime - though a period training away from the players could have been thrown in for good measure. He's had his chances. Pretty devastating to see IMHO, especially with the new regime, and Beamer's call to him at the Bluey presentation.

Except that the next year Johnson lost his license for driving 80 km/hr over the speed limit. But he wasn't drunk - so I guess you could say that the punishment for drinking worked.

This is creative and could actually be effective. Give him 50 for 2012 with the leadership team to review whether he has earnt his number 12 back for 2013.

Stevie J was suspended for 5 matches for public drunkenness back in 2007, a year later he was caught speeding at 128km/h in a 50km/h zone in his car and did 50 hours of road trauma education.

Also the fact that HIS actions affect the team will means that they have a right to be disappointed in him and will most likely ask for more from him, rather than it not being their problem, now it is there problem and his.

I doubt anything you can take off of Col now will mean as much as round 1 2012, that is meaningful to him, perfect call imo
