Firesale at the Saints

People like you think he's a genius , all the hard yards are done before he gets to a club .

He took over the most exciting list in the league just when it was hitting it's prime , bucked it up by removing all of it's flair and has left it a shambles without the stomach to rebuild it .

He didn't want Ball , gave him away , a kid who bled for the club but he wanted the destabilising influence of Lovett who Essendon couldn't pretty up and get rid of quick enough.

The Saints whine about their Edihad deal , the problem is they can't get enough people to come and watch , little wonder with Lyons mind numbing game plan .

Now he'll do to Freo ,(another club with a blossoming list) what he did to the saints , and they'll deserve each other .

Not interested in Dempster - we have Bail, Bartram and McKenzie.

I am interested in Ray, he can play, if he has to take a paycut we could offer him a decent amount and pick him up in the PSD. I wouldn't over-pay and he might be worried he'd end up at GWS.

Seems that they really needed to get rid of some cap space last week and didnt.....Only player i would be interested in is Gram but he is contracted atm so dont see how it can happen, they obviously cant pay him out either. farren Ray is the other one but is said to go missing at times, would be an experienced big body in the midfield, we obviously have the cap room and who says he gets a game unless warranted? could be worth looking at.

Also Dempster, Dawson, Peake Blake, and Polo all of whom i wouldnt consider at this stage

Farren Ray a "big body" in the midfield?! The bloke's 50kg ringing wet!

If you are basing his value on the 2003 draft you are using a poor and unreliable indicator. 2003 has proven itself to be definite non vintage year for talent.

He has 7 years in the system with 2 clubs. What has he done in the time?

I dont want depth in the midfield I want class. He lacks it and has much grunt as the 2011 vintage of Cale Morton.

Definite pass.

And what gem do you expect to get there in the PSD from an ageing list like St Kilda's?

2003 draft unearthed a Brownlow medalist

What can you say about the rest of top 25 in the 2003 draft?

I should have excluded Cooney but after Walker, Sylvia and Ray have been perfunctionary in their performances, the rest of the field has been ordinary. Across the Board the 2003 draft has been poor.

When he took over the Saints they had crashed out of elimination final against MFC in 2006 in poor style. Hardly in their prime. The side as whole lacked speed and lack discipline. All the key Saints players have played their best football under Lyon.

StKilda had Hayes who I would rate as better than Ball. And having both these players wth a couple of thers did little for their pace. St Kilda offered him a lower contract in that regard. The Pies had a shortage there and put the feelers out for him. The Pies put the Saints and other Clubs over the barrel when they would only offer pick 26. It did not finish well for the Saints. He wears some of the egg on Lovett but he took Michael Gardiner who became a very good ruck for them.

Every Club whines about Etihad. Its a shocking lifeless stadium. Crowds of all Clubs dont turn up as they would at the G. Hell, Lyon had them winning more than 65% of games under him including one season where they won 20-2 for the home and away season. Gee that must have really upset Saints fans winning each week.

Nice try at the melodrama and history revision though.

It would really upset me. There would be nothing to read on Demonland as there would be no blame on anyone. 20 wins in a H & A season , gee that would be tough to take.

How can people blame Ross Lyon for st. disco's mess. He was an employee of the club who took them to 3 Grannies. Yes the Ball situ was strange, but the board would have made the ultimate calls. If they didn't well they deserve all the shite that befalls them. I am just reading the article in todays HUN on the Etihad stadium deals. The AFL should be ashamed of all this. Clubs should have been allowed to upgrade their own grounds a la Geelong. What a mess. Thank God we are at the 'G.

Yeah poor style , we managed to fall over them after half their side was on 1 leg for half the game .

As for all players playing their best football under Lyon , show me the stats .

Maybe he got more out've Montagna but he stifled the rest.

Talk about revision , Gardiner might've been ok when he was on the field , problem was he rarely was .

He could've decided to get Ball right , but didn't . That was left to Collingwood.

As for percentage ratio of wins ..... Most saint fans I know snored through them , ask Shane Warne and Molly Meldrum what they thought , did a little dance when he left apparently .

Do ya think he would have a 65% win ratio if he took over Melbourne instead of the saints ?

If the roll we're reversed and Bailey had've taken the reins , Bailey woulda been the coach getting offered the big $$$ just this past off season , Lyon wouldn't have taken our reins , wouldn't have the 1st clue how to build a list ..

Clubs like us that struggle to get 20k through the Edihad gates hate it the lifeless atmosphere , clubs like Essendon and Carlton that when playing well can cram 50k in there love it .

Facts are after Lyon , the Aints have still only 1 flag , still have the party club tag and are now staring down the barrell of 10 years rebuild cause Lyon traded away their youth for roll playing hacks like Dawson and refused to play any they did have .

They just lost the KP Irish kid cause he wasn't getting a game.

You can hold him up as a pillar of coaches but for me he's nothing more than a saboteur of clubs he coaches and of the game as a specticle .

You make some good points Fork, but the 2(3) G.F appearances give him large creds as well. The aints were milimetres away from having 3 cups in the cabinet.

How many WYL?

Sure they pushed the Cats .

The 1st final against Collingwood they got lucky when he swung Gilbert forward and got some inspired football from Goddard and Hayes putting them back in it , Collingwood had them on toast till then.

The second GF the fool didn't learn any lessons from the previous week and went back to the ultra defensive game plan (the only plan he knows) and got flogged .

Tried to pull the same stunt with Gilbert again but couldn't couldn't fluke it twice in a row .

There were 3 G.F. appearances. 2 were great struggles. The replay was very similiar to the '77 corresponding game. The loser had an empty tank. I don't blame Lyon for that. No coach would have reversed that. I agree he is not blameless, but the st.fail board are the real fools here. Who was doing the books?

I don't know. Nothing, I haven't seen the list.

But I think we'll look at all who are in the draft pool to see IF there are any of interest. Probably none, but I'm sure we won't put the shutters up without looking.

Ross Lyon went through something like 10 assistants in 3 years. Dos that tell you something??

As for the Bubble and the fallout It's fair to say their siege mentality turned out to be very poor for them with secrets, innuendo, gossip and whispers driving a lot of the behaviour at the club. Yet he did manage to get them playing winning footy for a while.

Give me John Northey any day over Ross Lyon.

I am not disagreeing with ya. Lyon is by no means blameless, but i put far more blame onto the st. fail board, who allowed all the rubbish to continue. Lyons job was to win flags, which he very nearly did twice.

But yes i will be very happy if coach Neeld has a bit of the swooper's in him. I loved those years.

    DERAILMENT by KC from Casey

It wasn’t quite a trainwreck although at times, it sure looked like one, so I’ll settle for “derailment”.  The trip to Brighton Homes Arena in Springfield outside the back of Brisbane might not exactly be the same place where Homer Simpson’s family resides but, if you listened closely to the utterances of the Casey Demons fans both at the ground or watching via livestream, you could hear lots of groaning and plenty of expressions of “D'oh!” reverberating in the background, particular

TEN YEARS AFTER by Whispering Jack

Things have changed in the more than ten years since the West Coast Eagles decimated Melbourne by 93 points on the MCG early in the 2014 season. The two sides had not met at the home of football in the interim until yesterday when Melbourne won by a comfortable 54 points to remain in contention for this year’s finals series. Back in those days, the Demons were in the midst of their Great Depression but they have since tasted premiership glory and experienced a long enough period among

    CROSSROADS by The Oracle

Melbourne stands at the crossroads.  Sunday’s game against the West Coast Eagles who have not met the Demons at the MCG in more than ten years, is a make or break for the club’s finals aspirations.  That proposition is self-evident since every other team the club will be opposed to over the next eight weeks of footy is a prospective 2024 finalist. To add to this perspective is the fact that while the Demons are now in twelfth position on the AFL table, they are only a game and a half b

    DELUGE by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons overcame their inaccuracy and the wet inhospitable conditions to overrun the lowly Northern Bullants at Genis Steel Oval in Cramer Street, Preston on Saturday. It was an eerie feeling entering the ground that in the past hosted many VFA/VFL greats of the past including the legendary Roy Cazaly. The cold and drizzly rain and the sparse crowd were enough to make one want to escape to the nearby Preston Market and hang out there for the afternoon. In the event, the fans

    INSANITY by Whispering Jack

Somehow, the Melbourne Football Club managed it twice in the course of a week. Coach Simon Goodwin admitted it in his press conference after the loss against the Brisbane Lions in a game where his team held a four goal lead in the third term:   "In reality we went a bit safe. Big occasion, a lot of young players playing. We probably just went into our shell a bit. "There's a bit to unpack in that last quarter … whether we go into our shells a bit late in the game."   Well
