Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

You are kidding. The space on our list is a rookie spot. Keep sweating the very small stuff.

Indeed.

That's right just a rookie spot.

Davey

McKenzie

Evans

etc.

Who needs rookies?

I'm sorry it didn't work out for Juice he just didn't have it at top level seemed like a big kid when he played.

And yet, he played 28 more games than all you keyboard warriors.

Never understood why people take such joy in a player's career coming to an end. You mightn't have been a huge fan and you mightn't have agreed with each or any of the recontracting decisions, but that isn't some personal offence Newton has personally committed against yourselves. He's just yet another player who has now been and gone on our list.

He must've kicked a lot of cats around here, that's all I can think of.

I guess the fact that he remained on our lists for 7 years without playing more than about ten memorable minutes makes him a point of interest and discussion."

Surely must be some sort of a record.

I didnt realise Newton held back each of the above players. Shame on him.

Would you like to list out all the rookies that dont make it over the same period? Its a far longer list.

The issue was Newton was taking a rookie position in his last 2 years. His spot on the list was taking (I think Old 55 had it) about No 70 in the rookie draft that year. A devastating loss whoever that young gun is..

There are knowns and there are unknowns; we knew what Juice was but we'll never know what his replacement would have been like.

It's not "discussion" that I have a problem with.

I think Donald Rumsfeld summed it up:

"There are known knowns; there are things we know we know.

We also know there are known unknowns; that is to say we know there are some things we do not know.

But there are also unknown unknowns – the ones we don't know we don't know"

is it any wonder that running a player list at AFL level is so difficult

True, there are probably 100's of players that have missed out over the years that would have been very good players, a lot of it is luck.

How long was 426 (I can't even remember his name anymore) hanging around on the list?

Think he was holding back someone after Cameron Johnston, Robbie Campbell and Tommy McNamara.

Newton was last rookied in 2009 with the view to being insurance as the "forward/2nd ruck" role. I am sure you can do the research to work out who was still available at the low levels of the rookie list to ascertain who could have immediately filled that role. I am sure we missed out on a real gem.

The bottom line is that Newton has not deserved the hyped up hand wringing and derogatory references from posters over a number of years on this site.

Have a look for yourself, here's the link.

Mind you this was the year that we had to put Juice and Meeson in the Rookie Draft because we still had them on contract.

Have a look at the 2008 Rookie Draft, look at all the rubbish that was available in the 70's and 80's.

Why didn't you link to the 2010 draft when Newton was last retained?

http://www.footywire...ar=2010&t=R&s=P

Martin, Langford, Mahony and Kruger - that's what we missed out on.

Errr because RR was the one who mentioned the 2009 draft, read his post.

Look there will always be good and bad drafts but if you have a player that you know is not up to it, why retain him instead of someone that may be. I have noting against Juice and thought he showed something in the early part of his last game at Ettihad but the club decided to cut him and it was probably the right thing to do all be it a couple of years late.

And I did say "last rookied". Its good you did some research neverthe less.

The issue with retention of Newton was the forward ruck and he was a cheap option where we had few. Its not just an issue of applying hindsight that he is not up to it. As Old has mentioned Martin, Langford, Mahony and Kruger thats the options. And each were further way than Juice from playing. Its not a matter of good and bad drafts.

Fair comment. If we going to be critical of the class of 2004 and Newton was pick 46, I am more disappointed with Bate and Dunn who we blew first round draft picks on. Hopefully Neeld can turn around at least one of them.

I am not sure if there was issue with Newton's seven years. His resignings at the time were reasonable given the state of our list. And the last 3 years he was on minimum wages/rookie payments.

Disappointing Rhino.

Yes, but he did not mention the film The Man Who Fell to Earth or its main character, Newton (David Bowie).

Tony you are two steps ahead of the pack ... and I like it.

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n

    TRAINING: Monday 29th April 2024

Demonland Trackwatcher Kev Martin was on hand at Gosch's Paddock for Monday's training session and made the following observations. About 38 to 40  players down at training.  BBB walking laps.  Charlie Spargo still in rehab, doing short run throughs.  Christian Salem has full kit on and doing individual work with a trainer. He is is starting to get into some sprints. I cannot see Andy Moniz-Wakefield out there. Jack Viney and Kade Chandler have broken away from the

    DISCO INFERNO by Whispering Jack

Two weeks ago, when the curtain came down on Melbourne’s game against the Brisbane Lions, the team trudged off the MCG looking tired and despondent at the end of a tough run of games played in quick succession. In the days that followed, the fans wanted answers about their team’s lamentable performance that night and foremost among their concerns was whether the loss was a one off result of fatigue or was it due to other factor(s) of far greater consequence.  As it turns out, the answer to

TIGERS PUNT CASEY by KC from Casey

The afternoon atmosphere at the Swinburne Centre was somewhat surreal as the game between Richmond VFL and the Casey Demons unfolded on what was really a normal work day for most Melburnians. The Yarra Park precinct marched to the rhythm of city life, the trains rolled by, pedestrians walked by with their dogs and the traffic on Punt Road and Brunton Avenue swirled past while inside the arena, a football battle ensued. And what a battle it was? The Tigers came in with a record of two wins f
