Just heard Sheedy say on Footy Finals that "all his Captains are great leaders". We need to have not just the most senior player, or a player who is owed something for loyalty, as Captain, but the player who will be the best leader. The leadership of guys like Maxwell, Hodge, Brown, Newman, Goodes, Boyd etc is what we should be aiming for. Unfortunately we don't have lots putting their hand up.

Sorry, not to be a smart arse, but I thought this was patently obvious.

The days of selecting the best player as your captain are long gone.

If your best leader also happens to be your best player, it's a happy coincidence.

Stevie Johnson as Captain.

Buddy Franklin as Captain.

Nick Riewoldt or Goddard? certainly Not Montagna. Goddard for mine, doesn't rely on the flashy fluky skills bit is blood 'n' guts hard work.

The DEES... the hardest workers who 'Bleed' for the Jumper, literally. Beamer for me with Trenners to take over.

If the B&F is any indication than our best leader is our best player. Moloney is the soul of this club and deserves the captaincy.

Interesting that Grimes won the leadership award, despite being off the field most of the season.

Green is nowhere near a leader. Never has been. Was a real FIGJAM for many years and wasn't even in the leadership group until what, 2010?

I'd have Grimes except it's important your Captain is on the park leading by example. This pretty much discounts him. That leaves Trengove although the club really rates Rivers. 2nd in the Bluey but not much love here....

Surely nobody can be serious about Grimes, at this stage. He hasn't played for nearly a year, and wasn't setting the house on fire prior to his injury. He needs to concentrate on being the best player possible first, and that involves working hard on his disposal.

Trengove and Watts will be our future leaders - why not start the future right now??

It would be interesting to know who the new coach feels would be the best man for the job - of course there will be rumours but we will never really know, but I am sure it would be someone really hard and uncompromising.

I thought this stuff was covered in the Chip for captain poll.

Regardless, I remember Neita saying that playing at full-forward as captain was a very frustrating experience and that he couldn't influence games as much as he would have liked.

The same would go for Frawley at full-back.

That to me says a lot...Jordie is the type of leader we want going forward...He plays the ball, hard.

Should be in next years leadership group on the back of this award IMO

I don't mind seeing junior on this forum. He was a loyal, faithful and hard working servant of the club until he was sacked. I really don't think he will be playing many games, if any for GWS.

Just to add to that wyl, Jordie won the Coaches Award in 2010 as well, IIRC.

He also won the 'heart & soul player award' (awarded by the players) this year, which says a lot about how he is regarded by his team mates, and we know that he has shown enormous loyalty to the MFC. Should be a certainty for the Leadership Group imo, and maybe even a dark horse for higher honours.
