The word on Brad Green

Maybe next year

Recommended Posts

If the club does not re-sign Green, I will be extremely disappointed. We have a bad track record for treating club stalwarts well - and this would constitute yet another bad example of this.

Sign him up asap.

agree, he stayed when he could have gone to Carlton a couple of years ago, give him 2 years and take captaincy off him so he can concetrate on his football.

I know what you are saying - that a captain has to play the majority of games, or not be given the captaincy unless they are expected to play the vast majority of games.

However, it is telling that Grimes gets injured and wins the Leadership award.

I could juxtapose that with our currnet captain who, a couple of years ago, wasn't elected to the LG because he was injured in the preseason.

I didn't think that was an excuse then and I still don't. Leadership can be shown in other ways and if it means you become basically another assistant coach - you become another assistant coach.

I am sorry, but I would have Grimes captain before I would consider Brad again.

is Grimes ever going to string more than 3 games together? he is a good leader as we keep hearing but FFS he needs to stay on park.

A Question for all here....Would Brad Green have got a game with Collingwood, Hawthorn, or Geelong during last weekends Finals games? My answer is NO.

I did notice Cameron Bruce was not playing.

Brad Green is a required player on a one year contract basis going forward

Yeah but just about anyone who is good enough could have gone to someone else, at some time.

Then we up our offer to retain them. It's called bargaining chips for a better contract. Doesn't necessarily take away from his loyalty, but at the same time can't be used as a precedent to prove it.

The key is that some think he has just suffered poor form, while others think he is past it.

I think he is well past it, and that soon it will be obvious to everyone that he is ready for retirement.

It's not simply a form problem - his body and his game style are not up to it anymore.

Sorry - I think the comments are misguided. I do put most of last years return down to "form" ( and by the way - 31 goals from a small/mid forward who was out of form and was average at best in anyones language is not a bad return)

Whether his body is up to it I cannot say but in congested style football Brad Greens style is exactly up to it. Greens main strength is the use of his body in marking. Yes his leading has always been good but he has never been quick - once he is in front he use of his body to protect the ball has always been his strength. He is a more than useful overhead mark for his size. His game style holds up very well.

Happy to argue the point regarding if his body will hold up ( which I have no idea) or if his form will come back (I hope that when he "relinquishes" the captaincy that he will do so in good spirit and his form will return) however I think his game style is well suited to the modern football.

That you noticed that Cameron Bruce wasnt playing really has zero to do with this discussion - CB and BG are two completely different types of players and fill two different roles - you may as well have thrown Chenney, PJ and Simon Buckley into the "not playing" statement as well.

On this years form he hardly warranted a game with us but on 2010 form - He probably wouldnt get a game at Geelong ( Stevey J fills that role as the mid size forward) Collingwood and Hawthorn ? maybe...just maybe...In 2010 he was close to AA selection. So the question is - is 2011 an abherration or is it the start of a decline from which their is no coming back.

I think we are being soured and swayed by his very poor performance as Captain and am hopeful under a new coach and having the mantle of captaincy removed from his, which obviously has not sat well with him, that he will return to some of his best 2010 form

That he he turned down a Carlton contact ( it was actually Collingwood) should not be a factor as to whether he should be retained for 1,2 or 5 years. He should be offered a contract ( or not) because the people in know have a view as to whether he is value to the team or not.

Don't Mention 2010 form...It is irrelevent to the Question, his form in 2011 was close to deplorable for a player of his experience.

Is Brad Green worthy of more than a one year contract in 2012?

No is the simple answer...I want to win Flags not a popularity contest.

Green would not have got near those 3 teams last weekend just like Cameron Bruce.

His slide in form and the timing of the captaincy role are too coincidental when you consider his outstanding 2010 season. He needs a clean slate next year and hand over the reigns to someone else. Preferably of his own accord but I can't see that happening.

How is his form 12 months ago irrelevant to the discussion of contract negotiations?

Quite simply season 2011 came after 2010...."You are only as good as your last performance" one of life's better quotes i believe.

Okay - without testing my fading memory - he showed patches of form in games this year reminiscent of 2010 year. I am on the record for favouring a one year deal with KPI incentives for a second year.

Collingwood have been carrying Didak all year in the hope he will come good.

A One year Deal with incentives for a second year is fine...But he has to earn that 2nd year...How many times this Year Did Brad Greem miss those crucial Captains goals, The Goals that inspire the team to fight on & win??? Far too many for my liking...This is the time to change the MFC mindset. Right NOW.

Didak is a premiership player so he got this year in the bank...With his injury though i wouldn't be suprised if next weekend is his last Game. That Pectoral injury has made him less than half the player he was.

so you give Didak another year because he has played in a premiership ? that defeats part of your argument about earning a game. However I agree - dont just give the second year - it should be earned

Can anyone on here confirm either way whether Brad was at the B & F on Friday night? Unheard of that captain of the club would not be present unless there was a personal reason and someone would have given his apologies, surely. ????

Very good question TM.

I do not know and as no one has answered it would suggest he is not in Melbourne.

There was no report on him anywhere in Media as being there.

All suggest he is not in Melbourne at present.

No i don't give Didak anything, it's what Collingwood did...They weren't about to trade him so what else could they do??

Brad Green played all of 2011 and 95% of it was awful...totally different scenario.

don't know if I would go as high as 95%.

He did have a couple of good games and did kick 31 goals

I think it's quite obvious what is happening here.

He is in his 30s. He won't get a gig elsewhere. He is spending his YEARLY LEAVE -- which is what he's currently on and doesn't finish for a few more weeks -- to think about his future and consider his situation. If he wants to contribute to the club, he needs to know that he's up for it. That decision takes time.

    GALLANT by KC from Casey

The world “gallant” is not one that is readily acceptable to losing teams in our game of football so when it was used in the context of the Casey Demons’ loss to Sandringham in yesterday’s match at Casey Fields, it left a bitter taste in the mouth.  The Demons went into the game against the St Kilda affiliated Zebras with the advantage of playing on their home turf (not that this has been a major asset in 2024) and with very little else going in their favour. The Saints have close to a full

    MEANWHILE by Whispering Jack

… meanwhile, at about the same time that Narrm was putting its feet on the accelerator to obliterate the long-suffering Euro-Yroke combination, I heard someone mention in passing that Kuwarna was leading Waalitj Marawar by a whopping 46 to 1 halfway through the second quarter of their game over in Adelaide. “What is football coming to?” I asked myself.  In front of my eyes, the Demons were smashing it through the midfield, forcing turnovers and getting the footy to their forwards who w

HEAVEN OR HELL by The Oracle

Clashes between Melbourne and St Kilda are often described as battles between the forces of heaven and hell. However, based on recent performances, it’s hard to get excited about the forthcoming match between these two sides. It would be fair to say that, at the moment, both of these teams are in the doldrums. The Demons have become the competition’s slow starters while the Saints are not only slow to begin, they’re not doing much of a job finishing off their games either. About the only th
