If blease gets his body right will be something special. Watched him lately his accelaration is one of the best in the league and if he comes in will allow TAPPY to play upforward which is how he was drafted.

Strauss has a nice frame on him and his kick is great but under pressure with not many leading for you, you cant blame the kid that he makes some mistakes!

that first post brought tears to my eyes.

OP has already decided that Morton won't make it, that Blease, Strauss and Bennell were mistakes, that Gysberts was a slip-up and that Gawn, an underage bean pole who is yet to grow into his body, was a waste. And nobody rated Barlow, that's why he was a rookie pick- some kids just come on unexpectedly (see Fyfe).

I'm no seasoned poster 888, but you're a joke mate. come back in five years time. Honestly one of the worst, most premature OPs I've ever read. You see more reasoned comments on Bay 13 BigFooty.

I vaguely remember straight after the 2007 draft the general consensus from the media was that we were one of the big winners, that we'd got ourselves a ten year star in Morton. You can isolate and discuss all you want but of course with the benefit of hindsight we'd take Rioli, but at the time I'd bet my bottom dollar the Hawks would've snapped up Cale instead if they had a choice.

Remember that we've had plenty come through the rookie ranks, Roos fans were livid when they found out he was right under their noses at Port Melbourne.

not a single person in the country raised an eyebrow when we selected Morton at 4

the question if anything was 'what are you smoking WC taking Masten instead at 3' or possibly even Carlton/Richmond taking him at 1/2

to call it a recruiting stuffup now is just so stupid it beggars belief, same goes for Watts, Scully and Trengove, they all picked themselves

as mentioned above Watts and Morton would probably be killing it now if they were at the Pies

Some say hindsight is a wonderful thing....

If Gysberts doesn't make you happy, not much will.

J.Grant is certainly lighting it up for the Bulldogs....

and what is wrong with The Big Max Factor ? What ? Not big enough ?

Brilliant first post champ. Brilliant.

Best reply I have ever seen on any forum!

Great post,totaly agree.

Apart from Fitzpatrick (who is injured and could be anything)every player drafted from 2008 - 2010 has played and everyone has done well including rookies such as nicholson, evans and a bloke named Jurrah! They may not be stars yet but give them time and there's a good chance a number will be. We now have Howe up and running and the other three boys are progressing well at Casey.

The only one thats really struggling for credibility is 888

If anything 2001 was our horror draft year...wouldnt mind any of Nicky Dal, Sam Mitchell or Leigh Montagna over the last 10 years...

Gysberts is 19 and hes got the ball on a string already. Henderson is going alright and Barlow did a good running job at Freo .Morton can play but is really skinny and Gawn could be anything .Rioli is a freak but we missed out .Some good signs are that we have made the right decisions about who to get rid of (even J Mac and Bruce) .Carlton will be spewing they took Mclean and Johnson as well .We do have a plan that the coaches have stuck with it so dont drop your bundle just yet .Losing is a disease and we all have it in our system right now .We can look at Collingwood and Hawthorn and say we wish we had Buddy and Cyrol or we wish we could afford to go to Arizona every year but we can't .So suck up the pain .

I'd love to see Taylor Hunt in the red and blue. Kid's got heart and a fair bit of grunt.

In general though I think it's a bit premature to be making these comparisons. Vardy has played 4 games ffs.

I rate both. But to refer to the recruiters "should be disgraced with themselves" is an opinion at best - albeit from a minority. It's a tough gig.

Every club is littered with "what if" recruiting "blunders", or so says the petty disgruntled supporter(s).

To say "Melbourne got it wrong" with Gysberts is laughable.

I think they're both going to be champions.end of story

BUMP

Gysberts, Tapscott, Bail, Bennell, Gawn, Strauss, Nicholson, Evans, Howe, Jurrah.

Still early days, but some great signs and the bolded ones are terrific value picks

I think Barry Prendergast can be well satisfied with his efforts. Some inspired later picks.

With Blease, Cook, Davis, Mcdonald all showing good signs.

The OP has it wrong. Barry Prendergast has done a hell of a lot right and is proving to be a late pick/rookie specialist. With so much development still to come spots in the 22 will be hard to come by and excellence will be demanded.

I think any coach would want our list over just about any other .Bennell is a star. Gawn will be also,We got Jurrah from the filths seconds .Nicholson from the Ammos and Howe from country Tas .Nice work Prendo ,Schwab ,Bailey I say .

Oh yeah , that Watts guy can play a bit too.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
