The Alternative Guernsey

I realise this subject has been done to death. And, any posts like this are akin to hitting our heads against a brick wall.

However...

Seems to me that, when our current alternative jumper was introduced at the start of the year, the Club said it was hoped the AFL would permit us to wear blue shorts with the outfit, as they would make the complete uniform look that much smarter. Think most posters on here at the time agreed.

Well, as we all know, every time we have fronted up in the white outfit, our shorts have been WHITE. No doubt, at the direction of the AFL bureaucrats.

And yet, yesterday, there was Essendon, running around in that pathetic excuse for an alternative jumper (no white in sight), AND red shorts! Why were they not required to wear white shorts??

Then, seeing Carlton's away strip (all light blue, INCLUDING their shorts) I got to thinking whether the MFC away strip could be changed to replacing all the white bits (yes, including the shorts) to LIGHT BLUE.

The Carlton away strip successfully meets the requirement of avoiding a clash with jumpers such as our traditional strip, and yet has absolutely no white on it.

So, what's stopping Melbourne following suit? I reckon our current away strip would like great if the white was changed to light blue (along with the shorts, a la Carlton). That way, we would also revert to the "Red & Blue".

Yes, I realise the AFL clearly has different rules for different teams. But, based on the precendent set by Carlton, how could the AFL possibly refuse? (I speak as a fool...! LOL)

Anyway, would love to read your comments on this...

i like the current clash strip, and i think carltons blue is awful!

i think that we have done well with this seasons clash strip, and if we have to wear one i am happy with the one we have.

I like the clash strip as it is. Best one we've ever had and second only to our awesome home guernsey.

I don't particularly like the shade of blue in Carlton's clash jumper, either. My point was that the light blue is just as successful as white in satisfying the no clah requirement. I'm not advocating we use exasctly the same shade of blue as them. Just something light enough to satisfy the AFL, while still being "blue".

I also am reasonably happy with our current clash jumper. However, there are many MFC supporters who are vehemently opposed to any white on our clash jumper. I therefore offered my post as a possible solution. The actual shade of light blue to be used would be a matter for further discussion. And, I reckon the light blue replacement to the white would look great, just so long as it was the right shade of blue -- especially if the shorts were the same colour.

The reason Essendon wore red shorts is it does not clash with purple, or our blue where their black shorts do.

We could probably wear red shorts too, but red shorts with that jumper would look terrible, where as the white suits, agree the blue would look better.

I like the away strip, it's prob the best we have had.

Apart from the red looking pink-ish, it is the best alternative strip we have ever had by a long margin. It has really sharp design even though it is simple. Let's just leave it alone now and get on with footy.

Can you (or anyone) knock up a sample image?

Worth looking at/discussing

I honestly loved last year's clash strip, but am very 'eh' about this one.

That said, keep the Baby Blues away from it. Light blue and pink, someone would think that we're in a nursery and the parents don't know the sex.

Thanks for the positive response, Daisy. Unfortunately, I don't have the computer smarts to do a mock up...

Based on the few posts, doesn't seem to be too much interest in the concept. Ah well.

I reckon both Essendon and Carltons clash strips are embarrasing.

I have no problem with our current white alternate strip with white shorts.

Omly problem I have woth this whole issue is that teh AFL are so limp wristed when it coomes to dealing with Essendon and Collingwood. Collingwood like all teams with substantial amounts of white in their team colours should be compelled to wear white shorts when playing against teams with no white in their colours. It's common sense.

I think we have other things that are more worth worrying about than our away strip, to be honest... -_-

So we all just hide in the corner and sulk? Dunno what we'll do when the sky falls in...! LOL

essendon annoy me. red shorts? cmon.

even collingwood (yes collingwood) have a white strip with white shorts that has 3 black stripes on it (as opposed to a black strip with 3 white stripes on it and black shorts) and this effectively gives them a white clash strip (except against the roos, but thats another issue).

essendon and their red shorts can just go and get ducked.

I think we've reached a happy medium. I don't care if Essendon wear red shorts if they truly don't clash, as they did on the weekend. Collingwood is a tough one, I think the aim should be to get their away jumper more and more white with thinner black strips, but we can only try.

I think our jumper is reasonable, and I'm glad we haven't reverted to an EPL style set up where every now and then you see teams in fluoro blues, pinks, oranges and yellows which have no relevance to their traditional colours.

I really thought my idea of replacing the white on our current clash guernsey with pale blue was a reasonable one. I'm a bit surprised that, apart from Daisycutter, nobody else on this board is willing to even consider it. Especially given the previous vents against any white on our jumpers from posters here.

My impression is that most people don't mind the current alternate strip.

Well you might be mistaken

But it depends what context 'don't mind' is taken in

many don't seem to mind because they have accepted white is mandatory

BTW am yet to see the blue shorts which I feel would make a (little) difference

Well you might be mistaken

I might be, but given the huge threads ranting about alternate strips before our current one was adopted, contrasted with the almost complete lack of interest in the topic now, I don't reckon I am.

My theory is that winning in white keeps those threads to a minimum.

Alternate strip always looks better whe you're winning.

Good point.

This'll surprise no one, but I absolutely adore the clash strip.

It's great. If we can't wear our normal home strip, I wouldn't want us to wear anything else.

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
