Melbourne's top 10 players going into 2011

10. Bennell (another player people have already written of... again! - his second half of last season showed that he is going to be a very very valuable player for us going ahead. His run and his innate ability to get the ball will prove essential as long as he becomes more consistent)

I live in hope that he gets the ball in his hands 20-25 time a game - he will be an absolute gem if he can do this.

Why? I haven't included him myself, but I can understand why people might. The guy just needs to have a breakout season and he could be an absolute star. What's to be gained by deriding other peoples' opinions?

Because he hasn't even cemented a place in our best 22. He has simply been picked because of his draf number and 'potential'. I have seen nothing that makes me think he could be a star. Yes he was picked at number 4 in the draft which says what? He was rated as a junior. Is tall, has an engine... That's about all he has shown isn't it? Everything else is at about an average standard with some traits below average. (contested ball winning ability)

^ The above sentence were the measurements. Cale Morton has to this day shown a pass in skill, match winning ability is zero and proven track record is a pass if that. As for his 'ability'. Who knows?

Definitely not in the top 10 most important players if we are going by the measurements of the OP.

Ok, I understand where you are coming from in this and your previous post, and fair enough... however, the thought of where Morton was picked in the draft had never even occurred to me. I have just seen enough occasional sparks of brilliance to make me think that when it all finally clicks and he gets consistency into his game and a little more strength into his body, then he could have a break out season; as I said, I didn't put him in my list, so obviously I am not confident it will happen just yet, if at all.

I totally agree with those who've put Jamar as no.1. If we lose him, our ruck stucks are just not anywhere near competitive enough.

So for me it's:

1. Jamar

2. Frawley

3. Green

4. Davey

5. Grimes

6. Sylvia

7. Jurrah

8. Dunn (he won a couple of games for us last year with those 50+metre bombs of his)

9. McKenzie - preseason has shown how much we need his tackling ability

10. Rivers - saves us time and time again floating into gaps in defense.

So, can we clarify, are we naming the Top 10 Best or Top 10 Most Valuable, cos there would be a difference...

For mine, this is my Top 10 Most Valuable:

1. Frawley

I don't get too carried away with the pre-season, but gee we were a mess in the backline without him

2. Jamar

Only second to Frawley because I think more inside 50s come from rebounds as directly from ruck contests

3. Grimes

Arguably our best disposer out of the backline, and most composed player

4. Davey

Possibly our only player who has great creativity when finding teammates

5. Sylvia

Provides valuable attack from the middle, as opposed to pack extraction

6. Scully

Provides the aforementioned extraction, and to coin a term, is an important "tagspreader", meaning we are starting to have the midfield depth to free up some players every game

7. Green

Would be ALOT higher if we weren't having so much trouble getting it inside 50, without this man our forward line would be a rabble

8. McKenzie

Tackling. Period.

9. Jurrah

Gives us that danger factor in an otherwise predictable forward line

10.Moloney

Talk as much as you like about his disposal, but see who catches most of Jamar's taps

Few other blokes could be in there (Trengrove, Morton, Jones), but they would be based on potential, and a few others could charge in there with a bit of injury luck (Petterd, Aussie). Garland and Dunn unlucky, but just couldn't quite fit them in.

Goddard was pretty useless in his first three years too. Morton seems like that type of player to me. Good engine, tall, slight but with a bit of class.

The reality of the 'AFL world' is that the vast majority of top 5 draft picks go on to become high quality footballers.

Morton has shown enough glimpses - just as Watts, Scully and Trengove have - to suggest that he can become a very important player for us.

After that it just becomes a matter of opinion.

If we're to progress over the next 12 months Watts and Morton need to push into the top 10 and Scully needs to justify my high rating. FWIW I've got McKenzie and Petterd just missing out on my top 10. Interesting to note that the 2004 Rising Star winner can't crack the top 10 listed by any poster in this thread.

I don't really agree.

He's a 19 yo KPF who is built like a rake, missed pretty much his first season because of VCE and only as of this week will have completed his first pre season. I think it's pretty obvious that he wouldn't be.

Most important players going into 2011 or the most capable players in 2011?

One would argue either is irrelevant or they are both important.

Top 10 players in 2011 - Jamar, Green, Frawley, Davey, Sylvia, Moloney, Grimes, Garland, Rivers, and Jurrah.

Most important in 2011 and winning a flag - Scully, Trengove, Frawley, Watts, Jurrah, Morton, Grimes, Garland, Jamar, and McKenzie.

Wow. If we are talking importance im amazed no one has included bartram. He conceded the least amount of goals for a small defender last season just about.He shut down a heap of dangerous small forwards and god knows those small forwards have carved us up in the past. I understand his disposal is questionable at times but its not his role to carry and deliver.
